Alcohol-based hand sanitizers: severe intoxication in children.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are an alternative to hand washing with soap and water when water is unavailable. Their use has increased over the last decade. Cases of acute intoxication have been reported in children after accidental ingestion of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, sometimes leading to inebriation, agitation, drowsiness, impaired consciousness, and blood alcohol levels sometimes exceeding 2 g/I. In practice, alcohol-based hand sanitizers should be kept out of reach of children and should only be used when hand washing with soap and water is not possible. The possibility of alcohol

Acute alcohol intoxication increases REDD1 in skeletal muscle.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism by which acute alcohol (EtOH) intoxication decreases basal muscle protein synthesis via inhibition of the Ser/Thr kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is poorly defined. In this regard, mTOR activity is impaired after over expression of the regulatory protein REDD1. Hence, the present study assessed the ability of REDD1 as a potential mediator of the EtOH-induced decrease in muscle protein synthesis. METHODS: The effect of acute EtOH intoxication on REDD1 mRNA and protein was determined in striated muscle of rats and mouse myocytes using an RNase protection as

Disturbances of electrolytes and blood chemistry in acute alcohol intoxication.

Prevalence of electrolyte disturbances and biochemical changes were determined in patients admitted to the emergency room of the Department of Internal Medicine in Innsbruck, Austria during a six-month period. The value of biochemical parameters for the detection of chronic alcohol abuse was also investigated. The most frequent electrolyte disturbances found were hypernatremia (41%), hyperchloremia (21%), hypermagnesemia (17%) and hypocalcemia (15%), whereas hypokalemia and hypophosphatemia were observed quite rarely (5% and 3.4%, respectively). The most frequent biochemical changes observed w

[Structural alterations in the human brain in acute alcohol intoxication].

Various regions of the brain were studied in 14 patients who suddenly died and in 20 patients who died from ethanol intoxication. Severe circulatory disorders with pronounced vascular pathology, blood diseases, degenerative and necrotic neurocytic changes were shown to develop in ethanol intoxication. The area of neurocytes in the hemispheric cortex, thalamus, and cerebellum reduced due to the death of some of them. In the medulla, they were found to be more resistant to ethanol. The diameter of capillaries in the studied regions of the brain decreased due to the fall in cerebral arterial toni

Alcohol intoxication reduces impulsivity in the delay-discounting paradigm.

AIMS: To examine the moderating effects of alcohol myopia on cognitive impulsivity in humans using the delay-discounting paradigm. METHODS: Seventy-six male undergraduate students were randomly assigned to sober, placebo or alcohol conditions. In the delay-discounting task, participants made a series of hypothetical choices between a small, immediate reward and a large, delayed reward. To test the predictions of alcohol myopia theory, participants completed a standard version of the task or one containing cues which impelled the impulsive choice (i.e. preference for the small, immediate rewar

[Homicidal alcoholic intoxation versus manual neck compression].

A case of homicide involving a 49-year-old man is reported. In the course of a booze-up he was forced to excessive consumption of alcohol and was pushed back into a sofa by repeated grasping his neck which finally left him dead. The postmortem examination revealed a small abrasion in the right mandibular region, a contusion of the subcutaneous tissue above the left clavicle, a haemorrhage in the deep muscles of the neck at the right side of the cervical spine, a fatty tissue haemorrhage between the left cornus of hyoid and thyroid cartilage as well as petechiae of the eyelids and conjunctivae.

Treatment of the alcohol intoxications: ethylene glycol, methanol and isopropanol.

Intoxications with ethylene glycol, methanol, and isopropanol are among the most common ingestions, in the treatment of which a nephrologist plays an important role. These three substances have the ideal characteristics for intervention by hemodialysis, and the three parent compounds and their metabolites are readily dialyzable. Two of the three substances, ethylene glycol and methanol, are metabolized to more toxic substances, so that an early treatment strategy that removes the parent compound or blocks its metabolism can prevent the development of many of the adverse events that are often s

The evaluation of 251 autopsy cases of pedestrians who suffered fatal accidents in road traffic documents that the influence of alcohol entails an additional risk of injury for pedestrians in motor car accidents. In particular, severe trauma to the head, thorax and abdomen occur, whilst injuries to the pelvis and limbs are generally not more serious than in sober pedestrians. In the classical collision constellation of the pedestrian at the front end of cars, the upper part of the body is evidently especially endangered in the further movement phase. This phenomenon might be connected above al

Acute alcohol intoxication in a two-month-old baby.

A 2-month-old, well developed, healthy boy, weighing 5.55 kg, was fed 200 ml of bottle-milk containing 65 ml of sake. So-called kanzamashi (sake boiled in the evening and remaining in a bottle overnight,) was mistaken for yuzamashi (water boiled and left to cool), and used to prepare a 15% formula milk. About 10 minutes later, the baby became flushed, began to breath hard, and lose consciousness, and an alcoholic odor was noticed. He was brought to our clinic, where gastric lavage and parenteral fluid therapy were started. On admission, his main physical signs were, whole body had become red,

Motor performance during and following acute alcohol intoxication in healthy non-alcoholic subjects.

Chronic alcohol abuse has adverse effects on skeletal muscle, and reduced muscle strength is frequently seen in chronic alcoholics. In this study the acute effects of moderate alcohol intoxication on motor performance was evaluated in 19 non-alcoholic healthy subjects (10 women, 9 men). A randomised double-blinded placebo controlled design was applied to subjects receiving alcohol in juice and pure juice at two separate test periods. Isokinetic and isometric muscle strength and endurance were determined before, during, 24 and 48 h after the ingestion of alcohol in juice and juice (placebo). To

[Therapeutic tactics in treatment of patients with cranio-cerebral injury and alcoholic intoxication].

Case-histories of 1077 victims of cerebro-cranial injuries, 38 per cent of whom were admitted in the state of alcoholic ebriation, were analyzed. Alcoholic ebriation was found to materially change the clinical picture of the cerebro-cranial trauma, simulating, sometimes, a picture of a traumatic brain lesion. Curative measures aimed at the treatment of the traumatic lesion of the brain were applied in a complex set, depending upon the nature and the severity of the cerebro-cranial injury, the phase (stage) and degree of alcoholic ebriation.

Diagnosis and treatment of acute alcohol intoxication and alcohol withdrawal syndrome: position paper of the Italian Society on Alcohol.

The chronic use of alcohol can lead to the onset of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). About 50% of subjects with an AUD may develop alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) when they reduce or discontinue their alcohol consumption and, in 3-5% of them, convulsions and delirium tremens (DTs), representing life-threatening complications, may occur. Unfortunately, few physicians are adequately trained in identifying and treating AWS. The Italian Society on Alcohol has, therefore, implemented a task force of specialists to draw up recommendations for the treatment of AWS with the following main results: (1)

[Effect of erastin and G3139 on rat liver mitochondria in chronic alcoholic intoxication].

The effect of modulators of VDAC channels - G3139 and erastin on the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) functioning and changes in the content of proteins involved in regulation of mPTP (VDAC, CNPase, and TSPO) has been investigated in liver mitochondria of rats with chronic alcohol intoxication. It was shown that the mitochondria of rats treated with ethanol were more sensitive to mPTP induction. Moreover, ethanol induced changes in the expression of mPTP regulator proteins. G3139 and erastin were also able to influence the studied mitochondrial parameters, and they increased t

An experimental study on the role of naloxone in facilitating alcohol metabolism in acute alcohol intoxication rats.

OBJECTIVES: Naloxone has been used in acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) in China and some other Asian countries. However, the effects of naloxone on alcohol metabolism and its mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to explore the role of naloxone in facilitating alcohol metabolism. METHODS: AAI rat model was established by force-feeding alcohol. The effect of naloxone in facilitating alcohol metabolism was detected using an improved breathalyzer. The open field test (OFT) was also used to observe the behavioral changes in rats. RESULTS: By breathalyzer, naloxone could promote alcohol metabo

Sexual Alcohol Expectancies, Alcohol Intoxication, and Sexual Behavior in MSM: An Experience Sampling Study.

Despite advances in prevention and treatment, the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus remains a significant problem in the United States, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). Alcohol use can promote risky sexual decisions, and alcohol expectancies may influence the role of alcohol in decision making. The present secondary analysis tests the moderating role of sexual alcohol expectancies (SAEs) in the relation between daily alcohol intoxication and sexual behavior in a sample of 248 moderate- to heavy-drinking MSM. SAEs were assessed with the Sexual Alcohol Expectancies Qu
