Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous contaminants which are also found in drinking water. Concentration levels in drinking water vary widely and range from a very low contribution to total daily exposure for humans to being the major source of uptake of PFAS. PFAS concentrations in Norwegian drinking water has been rarely reported. We investigated concentrations of 31 PFAS in 164 water samples, representing both source water (i.e., before drinking water treatment) and finished drinking water. Samples were taken from 18 different water bodies across Norway. The 17 waterwork

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent contaminants with documented harmful health effects. Despite increasing research, little attention has been given to studying PFAS contamination in low- and middle-income countries, including Samoa. Using data and biosamples collected through the Foafoaga o le Ola ("Beginning of Life") Study, which recruited a sample of mothers and infants from Samoa, we conducted an exploratory study to describe concentrations of 40 PFAS analytes in infant cord blood collected at birth (n = 66) and infant dried blood spots (DBS) collected at 4 months p

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial products. The adverse effects of PFOS on the developing brain are becoming of a great concern. However, the molecular mechanisms of PFOS on brain development have not yet been clarified. We investigated the effect of early-life exposure to PFOS on brain development and the mechanism involved. We investigated the change in thyroid hormone (TH)-induced dendrite arborization of Purkinje cells in the primary culture of newborn rat cerebellum. We further examined the mechanism of PFOS on TH signaling by re

Presurgical psychopathological assessment usually focuses on detecting severe mental disorders. However, mild intensity psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern may also influence postsurgical outcomes. The aim was to identify psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern in candidates prepared for bariatric surgery compared to a normative population before and after surgery. A cohort of 32 patients seeking bariatric surgery in a university hospital between March 2016 and March 2017 were evaluated with Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), 36-item EDE-Q and BES before and after surgery. Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are continuously accumulated in surface sediments due to extensive and long-term application. However, the mechanisms through which disturbances induced by ship propeller jets at the riverbed cause secondary release of PFAAs from sediments remain unclear. In this study, the effects of different propeller rotational speeds on PFAA migration, release, and distribution in multiphase media were investigated by performing indoor flume experiments combined with particle tracking velocimetry. Moreover, key factors influencing PFAA migration and distribution were identifie

Profiles of 33 PFAS analytes and 12 essential and non-essential trace elements were measured in livers of stranded common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) from New Zealand. PFAS concentrations reported were largely comparable to those measured in other marine mammal species globally and composed mostly of long-chain compounds including perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA), perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) and perfluorooctanesulfonamide (FOSA). PFAS profiles did not vary significantly by location, body condition, or life history. Notably, significant positive cor

Consumer products such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and pharmaceuticals (PCPPs) enter aquatic ecosystems through inefficient removal during wastewater treatment. Often, the sterilization process of wastewater includes the addition of sodium hypochlorite that can react with PCPPs and other organic matter (i.e., dissolve organic matter) to generate disinfection by-products and can cause the final effluent to be more harmful to aquatic organisms. Here, we exposed Daphnia magna to two stages of wastewater, the pre-chlorinated wastewater (PreCl) and the final effluent. In addition, we exp

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals characterized by a fluorinated carbon chain that confers unique physicochemical properties. Widely used in industrial and consumer products, including textiles, food packaging, and firefighting foams, PFAS are highly persistent in the environment, earning them the designation of "forever chemicals." Their stability contributes to their widespread diffusion across different environmental compartments (water, soil, air) and multiple exposure pathways (e.g., diet). These lead to PFAS bioaccumulation and biomagnification

Human exposure pathways to PFAS from contaminated biosolids applied as fertilizers are not well understood. In the Maine Biosolids Study, we examined predictors of serum PFAS concentrations in adults (N = 144) living near sites of historical agricultural biosolids application. All participants had PFAS concentrations measured in their private drinking well water by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection from 2020 to 2023. In late 2023, we measured serum PFAS concentrations and administered a survey on water-related, occupational/recreational, residential, local food intake, and socio

The performance of a sequencing batch biofilter granular reactor (SBBGR), followed by a dual media granular activated carbon (GAC) column, was evaluated in terms of its ability to remove selected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from landfill leachate. The results show that the SBBGR achieved an overall reduction of 51%, with the preferential removal of long-chain PFAS, while short-chain PFAS were only partially removed. Subsequent GAC treatment exhibited compound-specific breakthrough behavior, which was governed by chain length. Short-chain PFAS (e.g., perfluorobutanoic acid) exhib

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent synthetic compounds that have contaminated millions of hectares of agricultural land through decades of biosolids application. Conventional remediation approaches, such as thermal destruction or excavation, are prohibitively expensive, carbon intensive, and leave affected farmland unfit for agriculture. Here, we present a potential scalable remediation strategy that combines phytoremediation, biochar production, and enhanced weathering to simultaneously remove PFAS from soil, immobilize residual contamination, and achieve durable carbon

The global decline in total fertility rate has been linked to environmental contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), yet the male reproductive toxicity and health risks of the widely detected emerging substitute, 8:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (8:2 Cl-PFESA), remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the testicular toxicity of 8:2 Cl-PFESA (0.04, 0.2, 1.0 mg/kg for 12 weeks) in male mice. Dose-dependent testicular damage was observed, manifested as seminiferous tubule disarray, reduced serum testosterone levels, and sperm abnormalities. In

Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been linked to adverse effects on women's fertility. However, information on the transfer of PFAS from blood to follicular fluid (FF) and individual characteristics influencing this process remains limited. We estimated the blood-to-FF transfer efficiencies (BFTEs) of 32 PFAS in samples from 576 women undergoing in vitro fertilization, and identified structural and physico-chemical predictors of BFTEs. The median BFTEs of PFAS ranged from 0.364 to 0.914. Carbon chain length, isomeric structure, functional group and physico-chemical pro

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) are the most prevalent anionic surfactants utilized in detergents and cleaning products. This study took sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as target LAS, and preliminarily explored the effects of LAS on the microbiological characteristics of constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) systems. Results showed that, SDBS had no impact on the physical processes such as adsorption and sedimentation in CW-MFC but significantly affected the subsequent biodegradation process. SDBS stimulated the biosynthesis of extracellular polymeric substances within

Given environmental persistence, potential for bioaccumulation, and toxicity of Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), the scientific community has increasingly focused on researching their toxicology and degradation methods. This paper presents a survey of recent research advances in the toxicological effects and degradation methods of PFOA and PFOS. Their adverse effects on the liver, nervous system, male reproductive system, genetics, and development are detailed. Additionally, the degradation techniques of PFOA and PFOS, including photochemical, photocatalytic,

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a class of synthetic chemicals detected in various environmental compartments, has been associated with dysfunctions of the human central nervous system (CNS). However, the underlying neurotoxicology of PFOS exposure is largely understudied due to the lack of relevant human models. Here, we report bioengineered human midbrain organoid microphysiological systems (hMO-MPSs) to recapitulate the response of a fetal human brain to multiple concurrent PFOS exposure conditions. Each hMO-MPS consists of an hMO on a fully 3D printed holder device with a perfusable orga

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of great ecological concern, however, exploration of their impact on bacteria-phytoplankton consortia is limited. This study employed a bioassay approach to investigate the effect of unary exposures of increasing concentrations of PFAS (perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS)) on microbial communities from the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Each community was examined for changes in growth and photophysiology, exudate production and shifts in community structure (16S and 18S rRNA genes). 6:2 FTS did not alter the growth or h

Chlorinated polyfluorooctane ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA), hydrogenated polyfluorooctane ether sulfonate (6:2 H-PFESA), and chlorinated polyfluorooctanesulfonate (Cl-PFOS) share structural similarities with the regulated perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), but their toxic potential is rarely known. Here, the thyroid disrupting potential of these four compounds in zebrafish larvae has been comparably investigated. PFOS, Cl-PFOS, and 6:2 Cl-PFESA were accumulated in the larvae at similar levels, approximately 1.3-1.6 times higher than 6:2 H-PFESA. Additionally, PFOS, Cl-PFOS, and 6:2 Cl-PFESA exh
