Hearing in an ambulance paramedic population.

Ambulance cab noise levels during siren use, hearing levels of 56 ambulance paramedics, and hearing acuity changes of four ambulance paramedics during a 14-year period were examined to determine whether environmental noise levels are sufficient to produce hearing loss, to determine if hearing loss is indeed present in ambulance paramedics, and to determine if ambulance paramedics lose heaing acuity at rates faster than "normal" peers. Ambulance cab noise levels during siren use were intense (mean of 102.5 dBA in a common conditions), well above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Curative Cell and Gene Therapy for Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) describes a series of genetic bone fragility disorders that can have a substantive impact on patient quality of life. The multidisciplinary approach to management of children and adults with OI primarily involves the administration of antiresorptive medication, allied health (physiotherapy and occupational therapy), and orthopedic surgery. However, advances in gene editing technology and gene therapy vectors bring with them the promise of gene-targeted interventions to provide an enduring or perhaps permanent cure for OI. This review describes emergent technologies

Assessment of alcohol and other drug use behaviors in health professions students.

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use behaviors of health professions students (HPS) were assessed by surveying both university-based HPS and other nursing programs in a Midwestern state in 1999. Response was 2,646 (56.4%) of surveyed students. Family history of alcohol-related and drug-related problems were reported by 39.8% and 13.9%, respectively, with 42.6% of respondents reporting one or both. Among nursing respondents, 48.1%, 19.2% and 51.1%, respectively, reported family problems with alcohol, drugs, or one or both. Past-year alcohol use was comparable to undergraduate college students (UCS)

Challenges in making the transition between pediatric and adult eating disorder programs: a qualitative study from the perspective of service providers.

There is scant research regarding the transition from pediatric to adult eating disorder programs. This study aims to increase understanding of the factors that impede or facilitate successful service transition for individuals with anorexia nervosa moving from pediatric to adult eating disorder programs. Participants included service providers representing pediatric and adult eating disorder programs, in addition to community treatment providers in a large city. The following themes were identified: a) readiness, not age, should determine service transition; and b) implementation of intervent

Occupational exposure in the work process of radiology technologists with 68Ga-labeled radiopharmaceuticals.

The study identified occupational exposure in the work of radiology technologists with 68Ga radiopharmaceuticals, in a Nuclear Medicine service in southern Brazil, by means of observation and document analysis. The occupational exposure related the factors, distance, time and shielding. Thus, it was observed high times during handling of the material, small distances between sources and radiosensitive structures, such as the eye lens and the thyroid gland. It is recommended to reassess and standardize the work, once that critical moments should not be restricted only to dosimetric reading.

[Viral hepatitis B. Risk for the anesthetist].

The risk of hepatitis B, previously reported in other countries, has never been investigated in French anaesthetic medical staff. The prevalence of hepatitis B viral markers has been calculated among the medical staff of the Department of Anaesthesiology, the hospital health care personnel, patients before surgical procedure and renal transplantation patients. The frequency in anaesthesiologists (18.75%; 12 out of 64) was significantly greater (p less than 0.05) than in health care personnel (10.5%; 91 out of 863). Prevalence increased with the length of practice in anaesthesiology. Prevalence

Feasibility of using postal and web-based surveys to estimate the prevalence of tuberculosis among health care workers in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Health Care Workers (HCWs) are among the highest risk groups for contracting tuberculosis (TB), which is ranked the third most common occupational health disease in South Africa. Little is known about the true extent of the burden of TB among South African HCWs and current surveillance approaches are inadequate. The study aimed to determine the feasibility of using postal and web-based surveys accessed through registries of registered professionals to estimate the prevalence of TB among HCWs in South Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional survey on a sampl

Issues related to human immunodeficiency virus transmission in schools, child care, medical settings, the home, and community. American Academy of Pediatrics. Committee of Pediatric AIDS and Committee on Infectious Diseases.

Current recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for infection control practices to prevent transmission of blood-borne pathogens, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in hospitals, other medical settings, schools, and child care facilities, are reviewed and explained. Hand-washing is essential, whether or not gloves are used, and gloves should be used when contact with blood or blood-containing body fluids may occur. In hospitalized children, the 1996 recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should be implemented as modified in the 199

An online Delphi study to investigate the completeness of the CanMEDS Roles and the relevance, formulation, and measurability of their key competencies within eight healthcare disciplines in Flanders.

BACKGROUND: Several competency frameworks are being developed to support competency-based education (CBE). In medical education, extensive literature exists about validated competency frameworks for example, the CanMEDS competency framework. In contrast, comparable literature is limited in nursing, midwifery, and allied health disciplines. Therefore, this study aims to investigate (1) the completeness of the CanMEDS Roles, and (2) the relevance, formulation, and measurability of the CanMEDS key competencies in nursing, midwifery, and allied health disciplines. If the competency framework is va

Occupational therapist-led versus rheumatologist-led care in people with hand osteoarthritis in Norway: an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled, non-inferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Hand osteoarthritis is a common musculoskeletal disease with a rising prevalence due to increased life expectancy. Because the disease is diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination and the first choice of treatment is non-pharmacological, it is not a high-risk condition. We aimed to assess the non-inferiority and cost-effectiveness of occupational therapist-led care for hand osteoarthritis compared with rheumatologist-led care. METHODS: We did an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled, non-inferiority trial at two hospitals in Norway. Participants with hand osteoarthri
