BACKGROUND: The Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) manages blood collection and distribution for the Department of Defense in support of global military and interagency operations. Despite its critical role, there is limited research exploring what motivates ASBP blood donors. This study identifies intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to inform targeted marketing strategies aimed at increasing ASBP blood donations.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A survey was conducted among blood donors at the Keesler Blood Donor Center (BDC). Participants ranked intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors on a 5

We study a simple SIS epidemic model accounting for human behavior. Individuals can decide at each instant of time whether or not they wear a face mask. Mask wearing decreases susceptibility to and/or transmission of the pathogen. We consider a situation in which individuals are unaware of their health status (infected or not), but they can perceive the prevalence of infection at the population level. This assumption fits situations in which most infected individuals are asymptomatic. Individual decision dynamics depends both on prevalence, as a proxy for the risk of being infected or infectin

This paper examines the concept of 'tsunami-tendenko,' a guideline suggesting that individuals prioritise their own safety over aiding others during large-scale disasters. Kodama defends tsunami-tendenko against accusations of egoism by arguing that the principle can be justified ethically on consequentialist (or more precisely, utilitarian) grounds. Kodama asserts that attempting to assist others during such disasters heightens the risk of 'tomo-daore,' where both the rescuer and the victim may perish. He claims that having people focus solely on saving themselves can maximise the overall num

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco usage is an epidemic as statistics point towards smoking as the second leading cause of death. Populations experiencing humanitarian emergencies may experience a higher propensity for tobacco, alcohol, and other substance abuse disorders. This review aimed to map tobacco prevention and control interventions in humanitarian settings.
AIMS AND METHODS: The search for this scoping review was conducted in six databases and supplemented with a gray literature search. Articles were screened at title-abstract and full-text by two pairs of authors, and data was abstracted by thr

Background: Humanitarian outreach delivers essential cleft lip and palate (CLP) care in low- and middle-income countries. Objective: To review the literature regarding humanitarian CLP care and determine if a shift toward more sustainable care delivery is observed. Methods: A systematic review was performed on articles describing CLP repair in humanitarian settings from 1985 to 2020. Publications were categorized into trip reports, outcomes, teaching, and public health. Articles were stratified into three 12-year intervals (T1-T3) for analysis. Results: A total of 246 publications were include

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being explored as a tool for supporting humanitarian action through hazards and crisis prediction, real time monitoring of evolving crisis conditions and humanitarian needs, resource allocation, and decision-making. However, evidence on how AI is implemented, evaluated, and governed across humanitarian contexts remains fragmented. In this scoping review, we mapped the global evidence on the application of AI in humanitarian settings, including its distribution across the emergency management cycle, deployment maturity, and evaluation. We

In the humanitarian sector, anticipatory action entails acting ahead of predicted hazardous events to prevent or mitigate potential impacts and needs. It leverages early warnings to bridge preparedness and response, with a core principle being the provision of ex-ante emergency funding for preagreed early actions. Traditionally applied to extreme climatic events, there is growing interest in integrating anticipatory action into disease outbreak preparedness and response. We present an analytical framework for trigger development for climate-sensitive infectious disease outbreaks based on a rev

INTRODUCTION: Effective recruitment and retention of donors are essential for the supply of blood components and blood-derived medicines. In many high-income Western countries, there is an imbalance between demand and production of blood-derived medicines. Motivational factors behind donations range from altruism and health concerns to incentives or responding to a need from friends or family. Motivations might differ according to beliefs and social norms. The aim of this review was to identify the motivations that influence blood and plasma donation behavior in high-income Western countries.

OBJECTIVE: To reduce uncertainty about the effectiveness of Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) interventions, we assessed the influence of several DMV-based media campaigns on organ donor registration.
METHOD: Across 4 studies, campaigns were implemented in 8 (Studies 1-3) or 9 (Study 4) New Mexico DMVs. Three theories guided message development (i.e., efficacy, altruism, vested interest). Donor registration was the outcome measure.
RESULTS: In Study 1, both the efficacy (OR = 1.14) and altruism (OR = 1.11) campaigns resulted in significantly more registrations than the control condition an

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine associations of personality dimensions and facets with insomnia symptoms in a community sample of older adults.
METHODS: We studied 1049 participants aged 60-97 years in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Personality was assessed by the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R), and insomnia symptom severity was measured by the Women's Health Initiative Insomnia Rating Scale (WHIIRS).
RESULTS: Adjusting for demographic characteristics, higher neuroticism, lower conscientiousness, and lower extraversion were associated with greater insomnia symptom sever

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder (BD) have overlapping clinical presentations and symptoms - sources of persistent clinical confusion. Game-theory can characterize how social function might be sub-optimal in the two disorders and move the field beyond the anecdotal description of clinical history. Here, we tested the hypothesis that BPD and BD can be distinguished on the basis of diminished reciprocal altruism in iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) games.
METHOD: Twenty females with BPD, 20 females with euthymic BD and 20 healthy (non-clinical) females, matc

BACKGROUND: Prosocial emotions related to self-blame are important in guiding human altruistic decisions. These emotions are elevated in major depressive disorder (MDD), such that MDD has been associated with guilt-driven pathological hyper-altruism. However, the impact of such emotional impairments in MDD on different types of social decision-making is unknown.
METHOD: In order to address this issue, we investigated different kinds of altruistic behaviour (interpersonal cooperation and fund allocation, altruistic punishment and charitable donation) in 33 healthy subjects, 35 patients in full

BACKGROUND: Understanding donor profiles and the barriers and facilitators influencing blood donation is crucial for strengthening voluntary blood donation programs. This study aimed to examine the socio-demographic profile of blood donors and to identify the key barriers and facilitators influencing blood donation practices framed within psychological, informational, logistical, and social dimensions.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among donors at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) using a structured questionnaire to assess sociodemographic characteristics and percei

BACKGROUND: Exercise mitigates chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity, but implementing exercise interventions during chemotherapy treatment can be challenging. Understanding the patient perspective can help refine exercise programs and facilitate successful implementation of future interventions.
PURPOSE: To utilize qualitative data to optimize adherence and retention for a future randomized clinical trial involving a tailored physical activity (PA) intervention among breast cancer and lymphoma patients receiving potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy.
METHODS: Eighteen breast cancer and lymphom

OBJECTIVES: For the past 25 years, local field potential (LFP) recordings from externalized deep brain stimulation (DBS) leads have provided unique insights into the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), and dystonia, contributing to the development of adaptive DBS. However, patient experiences in externalized DBS experimental studies remain underexplored. We aimed to evaluate patient satisfaction, motivations, and perceived burden from participating in postoperative externalized DBS LFP research.

BACKGROUND: Childhood and adolescent traumas are exceptionally prevalent worldwide. Despite their high prevalence and substantial impact, little research has investigated the rates and specific types of early trauma by gender. It is also unknown whether the types of early trauma are differentially associated with heightened or hindered prosocial attitudes and behaviours.
OBJECTIVE: To address this gap, this study aims to explore the rates of different types of early trauma (i.e., abuse: sexual, physical, and emotional; neglect: physical and emotional) among young Australian adults and investi

Although many cross-sectional studies have examined the correlates of psychological resilience in U.S. military veterans, few longitudinal studies have identified long-term predictors of resilience in this population. The current prospective cohort study utilized data from a nationally representative sample of 2157 U.S. military veterans who completed web-based surveys in two waves (2011 and 2013) as part of the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS). Cluster analysis of cumulative lifetime exposure to potentially traumatic events and Wave 2 measures of current symptoms of po

The COVID-19 pandemic placed junior physicians at the forefront of clinical care under extraordinary conditions, compelling them to navigate overwhelming workloads, and emotionally challenging and ethically complex situations. This qualitative study explores how these experiences shaped their perceptions of self-sacrifice, as interpreted through the lens of the social contract as expressed in foundational frameworks of medical professionalism, such as CanMEDS. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 junior physicians at two emergency hospitals in Sweden, and the data were analyzed us

The temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) consistently emerges in other-regarding behavior, including tasks probing affective phenomena such as morality and empathy. Yet the TPJ is also recruited in processes with no affective or social component, such as visuo-spatial processing and mathematical cognition. We present serendipitous findings from a perceptual decision-making task on a bistable stimulus, the Necker Cube, performed in an MRI scanner. The stimulus in question is a transparent, wire-frame cube that evokes spontaneous switches in perception. Individuals can view the cube from below or fro

The literature contains numerous reports on motivation in blood donors, although none of these are specific to blood donation in Italy and almost all of them focus on altruism and the desire to help others. Altruism is important, but a comprehensive analysis of donor motivation should examine all the factors affecting the decision to donate, including commitment to voluntary blood donor organizations. The aims of this paper are to verify if the motivational factors that influence the choice to donate blood in Italy are generally consistent with the findings from other countries reported in the
