Failure of intravenously administered [99mTc] pertechnetate to leave the vascular space was observed in a patient with hyperaluminemia due to treatment with an antacid drug containing aluminum hydroxide. A repeat study 3 mo after discontinuing medication, when the plasma aluminum level had fallen, revealed normal in vivo distribution of pertechnetate. It was found that instant thin-layer chromatography, using pertechnetate and an 85% methanol system, can detect plasma aluminum levels as low as 50 microgram/l.

The role of aluminum concentration and pH in the purification of waste Li-ion battery leach solution was investigated using NaOH and LiOH as neutralization agents ([H2SO4] = 0.313 M, t = 6 h). Solution was prepared from synthetic chemicals to mimic real battery leach solution. Results demonstrate that pH (3.5-5.5) has a significant effect on the precipitation of metals (Fe, Al, Ni, Cu, Co, Mn, and Li), whereas higher temperature (T = 30 and 60 °C) decreases the precipitation pH of metals. We report a case of a calcium phosphate bezoar resulting in colonic intussusception in a boy with chronic renal failure who received calcium carbonate to control hyperphosphatemia. Because of concerns about aluminum-related disease in patients receiving aluminum hydroxide phosphate binders, calcium carbonate is being used more frequently to manage phosphate retention in renal failure. The development of bezoars may complicate this new form of therapy.
