This study compared the dimensional alterations, the need for sinus floor elevation, and the histologic wound healing of augmented and nonaugmented alveolar sockets. Sixteen human extraction sockets were either grafted or left untreated. At baseline and 3 and 6 months postextraction, alveolar ridge alterations were evaluated; at 3, 6, and 9 months, histologic analyses were conducted. Implant placement with or without sinus floor augmentation was decided at 6 months. Three of eight patients in the control group underwent sinus floor augmentation compared to one of six in the experimental group.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar bone deficiency is a common postextraction sequela that adversely affects implant placement. Therefore, ridge augmentation is often required to obtain proper bone quantity and quality for restoratively driven implant placement. This case series describes the successful horizontal and vertical alveolar ridge augmentation using custom-fabricated allogeneic block bone grafts.

INTRODUCTION: Cases of intractable dental implant require vertical bone augmentation; however, the predicted bone height and volume are difficult to obtain. In vertical bone augmentation, the contact surface between the scaffold and the bone is limited to the bottom face of the scaffold. Furthermore, the strength decrease caused by scaffold resorption leads to collapse of the augmented site, leading to a decrease in the bone volume and height.
OBJECTIVES: To promote bone ingrowth, we fabricated carbonate apatite (i.e., bone mineral) honeycomb (HC) scaffolds with uniaxial channels vertically p

AIM: The aim of this report is to describe a significantly deficient case of alveolar bone that was managed by alveolar bone augmentation using a technique of distraction osteogensis and onlay bone grafting prior to dental implant placement.
BACKGROUND: Injury to the teeth and alveolar ridge of the maxillary anterior region can cause a severe alveolar ridge deficiency resulting in ridge atrophy and maxillary retrognathism. The loss of these teeth and alveolar bone together with fibrotic scar formation can result in adverse changes of the interarch space, occlusal plane, arch relationship, and

BACKGROUND: To minimize alveolar bone resorption, alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) has been proposed. Recently, interest in improving the feasibility of implant placement has gradually increased, especially in situations of infection such as periodontal and/or endodontic lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate if ARP improves feasibility of implant placement compared with no ARP in periodontally compromised sites. Secondary endpoints were the necessity of bone graft at the time of implant placement and implant failure before loading at ARP compared with no ARP.

The posterior mandible is the primary area for occlusal function. However, long-term tooth loss in the posterior mandible often leads to rapid absorption of both buccal and lingual trabecular bone plates and subsequent atrophy of the alveolar ridge. This ultimately results in horizontal bone deficiencies that complicate achieving an optimal three-dimensional placement for dental implants. Conventional techniques employed clinically for horizontal bone augmentation have limited efficacy, cause significant surgical trauma, and require extended treatment duration. Consequently, the selection of a

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of lateral ridge augmentation in 36 patients with severely atrophic alveolar ridge using allogeneic bone grafts in a framework technique. A thinned allogeneic cortical graft was screwed to the alveolar ridge, leaving a hollow space that was filled with particulated allogeneic cortical bone. Thirty-six patients who received surgical lateral block augmentation using allogeneic bone grafts were involved in this study. Implants were placed in a second session after a mean time of 6.3 months. The surgical technique and the reasons for failure of surger

Alveolar ridge distraction is a recent and promising technique for ridge augmentation. Since 1997, a new distraction system incorporating a distraction implant has been in use. It can be used for alveolar ridge distraction and is not removed from the alveolar ridge. Upon completion of the distraction, it remains in the alveolar process for later prosthetic treatment. Thirty-five patients were treated with distraction implants for the correction of alveolar ridge deficiency. In 10 patients with atrophy of the mandible or maxilla, 16 patients with severe defects of the alveolar process after tra

The combination of a relatively new alveolar ridge augmentation material composed of purified fibrillar bovine collagen (PFC) and particulate hydroxylapatite (HA) (Alveoform Biograft Collagen Corp., Palo Alto, Calif.), along with endosseous root form dental implants, was simultaneously placed by a combined flap and tunneling technique to reconstruct and augment endentulous and atrophic mandibles. Prosthodontic and patient surveys reported great satisfaction with overdenture stability, retention, comfort, esthetics, speech, and function. Six reported cases showed that clinically significant alv

BACKGROUND: To compare bone regeneration and dimensional alteration of alveolar ridge at intact and damaged extraction sockets after alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) and implant placement versus unassisted socket healing followed by guided bone regeneration (GBR) with simultaneous implant placement.
METHODS: In 6 beagle dogs, 3 types of extraction sockets in the mandible were created: (1) intact sockets, (2) 1-wall defect sockets and (3) 2-wall defect sockets. The sockets were allocated to undergo either (1) ARP and implant placement 8 weeks later (ARP group) or (2) GBR with simultaneous imp

INTRODUCTION: Although various surgical techniques have been utilized in the reconstruction of severely resorbed alveolar bone, its regeneration is still regarded as a major challenge. Most of the surgical techniques used in advanced ridge augmentation have the disadvantages of prolonging the patient's edentulous healing and increasing the need for surgical revisits because simultaneous implant placement is not allowed. This report presents a new and simplified method for advanced ridge augmentation, which utilizes a vertical tenting device.

UNLABELLED: Various bone grafting methods are applied to eliminate horizontal atrophy of the jaws. However, problem complexity brings about ongoing research and development of new ways to achieve the predicted stable and long-term results of implantological treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of the developed method for bone grafting, a modified two-stage split technique for controlled ridge augmentation in horizontally atrophic posterior mandible, using radiological analysis data.

Vertical augmentation of the alveolar ridge is intended to restore resorbed alveolar ridges. This procedure is important for the placement of dental implants in a favorable position and also to enhance restoration esthetics. This article presents an approach for vertical ridge augmentation in the anterior maxilla utilizing symphyseal bone cores. A patient presented with 2 localized bony defects around the maxillary lateral incisors. Following extraction of these teeth, vertical bone defects of 7 mm on the right and 6 mm on the left were observed in relation to the cementoenamel junction of the

Replacement resorption and ankylosis are frequently diagnosed following severe dental trauma. The complications that may develop as a result of ankylosis of a permanent incisor in children and adolescent include: esthetic compromise, orthodontic complications because of: arch irregularity; lack of mesial drift; tilting of adjacent teeth, arch length loss and local arrest of alveolar ridge growth. To avoid such complications, an ankylosed tooth should be removed before the changes become so pronounced that they compromise future prosthetic treatment. The purpose of this article was to present a

BACKGROUND: Remodeling and resorption of the alveolar crest, specifically at the buccal aspect, characterize the healing extraction socket. These result in narrowing and shortening of the alveolar ridge, which compromise esthetics and complicate restoration. Alveolar ridge augmentation has been proposed to facilitate future site restoration by minimizing ridge resorption. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare extraction socket healing and alveolar ridge alteration after socket augmentation using bone allograft covered with an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) or polytetrafluoroethyle

The atrophic edentulous ridge represents one of the greatest challenges faced in general practice. An estimated 20 million adults in the U.S. are edentulous in at least one arch and a significant number of these patients experience problems with their prostheses from alveolar bone loss. Many of these patients, for various reasons, are not candidates for endosseous dental implants. Alveolar ridge augmentation is a viable option in many of these cases; however, this procedure has been unpredictable because of particle migration. Presented here is a method of ridge augmentation with dense hydroxy

One of the most challenging and technically sensitive surgical procedures in conjunction with dental implant rehabilitation is sinus membrane lifting to increase the bone height or volume from the maxillary sinus floor. This important preprosthetic surgical technique has been available for >15 years, making possible the creation of bone volume in the edentulous posterior maxilla for the placement of dental implants in surgically compromised cases. Substantial literature exists regarding the most efficacious way to increase the predictability of this surgical procedure, and reduce its associate

This study aimed to collectively synthesize the available evidence on the effect of alveolar ridge preservation at the posterior maxilla in reducing maxillary sinus pneumatization after tooth extraction, and the necessity of sinus floor augmentation during implant placement. Database search, along with additional screening in the grey literature were conducted, to find clinical studies where ridge preservation was performed in the posterior maxilla, and was compared with normal healing. Eleven studies were included, with 185 and 203 sites for the test and control groups, respectively. Ridge pr

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) often results in congenital tooth agenesis and severe developmental alveolar ridge defects, leading to functional impairments, reduced masticatory efficiency, and psychosocial challenges. Limited local blood supply and rapid bone resorption in ED patients pose significant challenges for predictable implant rehabilitation, highlighting the need for biologically guided, long-term restorative strategies. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male patient with hypohidrotic ED (HED) presented with multiple congenitally missing teeth (FDI 12–16, 22–26, 34–35, 42, 44
