On the mechanism of rejuvenation of ageing detached bean leaves by low-concentration stressors.

The effect of low concentrations of some stress-inducing compounds of different toxicity and chemical nature, such as Cd and Pb salts or DCMU, was investigated on the senescence of chloroplasts in detached primary leaves of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). After 1 week of senescence followed by root development from the petiole, these agents stimulated chlorophyll accumulation and photosynthetic activity ((14)CO(2) fixation) as compared to the control, thus inducing rejuvenation. Low-concentration stressors increased the level of active cytokinins in roots and leaves during the treatment, as moni

Discovery of Cycloheptanone-Pyrrole Derivatives with α-Hydroxycarboxylate Fragments as Novel Dihydroxy Acid Dehydratase-Targeting Herbicides.

Dihydroxy acid dehydratase (DHAD) is a promising herbicide target, but no commercial DHAD inhibitors exist yet. The natural product aspterric acid (AA) has been shown to act on DHAD, inspiring us to discover novel cycloheptanone-pyrrole compounds (6aa-6ay) featuring α-hydroxycarboxylate fragments as potential DHAD-targeting herbicides. In Arabidopsis thaliana seed germination assays, most compounds demonstrated 100% inhibition at 200 μg/mL, comparable to that of the positive control penoxsulam. In greenhouse herbicidal activity tests, compound 6ag demonstrated over 85% control effectiveness ag

Pogostemon cablin Constituents: A Promising Source of Natural Fungicides and Herbicides.

Antifungal screening identified Pogostemon cablin essential oil (EO) as a potent fungicide against Colletotrichum fragariae, prompting bioassay-directed fractionation. This process identified patchoulol and pogostone as antifungal constituents. Pogostone exhibited strong activity with IC50 values of 8.5 ± 0.5, 2.34 ± 0.13, 7.74 ± 0.23, and 6.34 ± 0.85 μg mL-1 against C. fragariae, C. gloeosporioides, C. acutatum, and Botrytis cinerea, respectively, at 48 h. Due to its structural similarities to β-triketone herbicides, its phytotoxicity was assessed. It exhibited herbicidal activity against Lem

Possible dietary protective factors in relation to the distribution of duodenal ulcer in India and Bangladesh.

In India there are regions of high incidence and regions of low incidence of duodenal ulcer. Rats prefed for two weeks on diets from low incidence areas developed significantly fewer rumenal ulcers after pyloric ligation than rats fed on diets from high incidence areas. The protective action was found in various individual items of food taken from the diets of low incidence areas. Unrefined wheat and rice, certain pulses (black gram, green gram, horse gram), some millets (sava, kutki, ragi), soya bean, ladies' fingers, cabbage, spinach, and whole cream milk were protective. Refined wheat, poli

VIGS and SIGS-mediated PDS gene silencing in dicot weeds reveals species-specific responses and delivery limitations.

RNA interference (RNAi) is a promising approach for pest control but remains underexplored in weed management. The current study evaluated two transient RNAi approaches, virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) in the noxious weed species Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, and black nightshade, and spray induced gene silencing (SIGS) in Palmer amaranth, to silence the Phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene, as a visual reporter. For VIGS, species-specific PDS fragments were cloned into the Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) vector and delivered either directly via Agrobacterium-mediated agroinfiltration or indirectly thr

Synergistic improvement of crop physiological status by combination of cadmium immobilization and micronutrient fertilization.

Wollastonite application in cadmium-contaminated soils can reduce cadmium concentrations in plant, while the side effect is the synchronous immobilization of micronutrients, which reduces micronutrient uptake in plant, inducing micronutrient deficient symptoms. Accordingly, we investigated whether the supplement of Zn and Mn fertilizers after the wollastonite addition could promote the growth and photosynthesis in amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.). In this study, plants were cultivated in cadmium-contaminated soil under micronutrient fertilization alone, wollastonite addition, and combination

Glycosylation pattern in the appendix testis in children with cryptorchidism.

In humans, at about week 6, sex cords develop within the forming testes. Testes normally descend to the scrotum; cryptorchidism occurs when one or two testes do not descend to scrotum and in some case are accompanied by the appendix testis. The appendix testis is a small sessile or polypoid structure located at the antero superior pole of the testis, adjacent to the head of the epididymis. Glycans can be involved in development of the appendix testis and cryptorchidism. In this work, lectin histochemistry was used to evaluate glycans expression in appendix testis in children with cryptorchidis

Design, Synthesis, and Herbicidal Activity of Novel Dihydrochalcones Derived from Flavokawains and Their Analogs.

Weeds are a major cause of crop production losses worldwide, and environmentally friendly chemical control based on natural or semisynthetic compounds has attracted increasing attention. In this study, flavokawains, a class of natural chalcones, and their analogues were converted into dihydrochalcones (1-27) via Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation. The herbicidal activities of these compounds were evaluated against Chinese amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Several compounds significantly inhibited seed germination and seedling growth in both species. Herbicidal

Gluten-free pasta as an alternative in the diet of patients with celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that produces inflammation in the gut mucosa, affecting nutrient digestion and absorption. CD affects 0.3% to 1.0% of the world's population and only 15% have a clinical diagnosis. The only effective treatment is a gluten-free diet. The objective of this study was to develop a dough for gluten-free pasta prepared with mixtures of flours from corn, amaranth, soy, and rice. According to the FAO standard of 1975, the resultant mixtures should have a protein content greater than 11.0% and a chemical rating of not less than 70. Three mixtures were obtai

Immobilization of Cadmium by Molecular Sieve and Wollastonite Is Soil pH and Organic Matter Dependent.

The excessive cadmium (Cd) concentration in agricultural products has become a major public concern in China in recent years. In this study, two amendments, 4A molecular sieve (MS) and wollastonite (WS), were evaluated for their potential passivation in reducing Cd uptake by amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) in six soils with different properties. Results showed that the responses of amaranth biomass to these amendments were soil-property-dependent. The effects of MS and WS on soil available Cd were in turn dependent on soil and amendment properties. The application of WS and MS at a dose of 6
