Subnormal visual acuity after compliant amblyopia therapy: residual/refractory amblyopia or co-existing pathology? - a retrospective analysis.

Purpose: To assess the prevalence of alternate etiology/co-existing pathology among patients with amblyopia, and to characterize factors contributing to over-diagnosis of amblyopia. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of children (from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019) who were initially diagnosed as "amblyopia" but later an alternate diagnosis for subnormal vision was established. Patients who had a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of ≤20/32 (0.2 logMAR) after compliant amblyopia therapy were divided into 2 groups: those with refractory amblyopia (BCVA improvement from baseline

Effect of Amblyopia Therapy on Retinal and Choroidal Thickness in Children With Unilateral Anisometropic Amblyopia: A Prospective Longitudinal Study.

Introduction Anisometropic amblyopia is a leading cause of preventable monocular visual impairment in children. Traditionally considered a cortical developmental disorder, recent advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT) have demonstrated measurable structural alterations in the retina and choroid of amblyopic eyes. These findings suggest that amblyopia may also involve retinal and choroidal components. Objective To evaluate longitudinal changes in retinal and choroidal thickness following amblyopia therapy in children with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia. Methods This prospective long

Neuroprotective Effects of Rubus idaeus in Amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired vision in childhood and remains challenging to manage effectively. The present study investigated the neuroprotective potential of Rubus idaeus L. (red raspberry) in a rodent model of amblyopia. Through network pharmacology analysis, the PI3K/AKT axis was identified as a major regulatory target of R. idaeus L. treatment. In vitro, 1 µg/mL of R. idaeus L. significantly enhanced neuronal survival under oxidative stress (82.4% vs. 54.6%, p < 0.01) and reduced apoptotic cell death by 23.5% (p < 0.001). These protective effects co

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Adults With Amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Through transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) it is possible to change cortical excitability of the visual cortex, and to influence binocular balance. The main goal of our study is to assess the effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation, specifically theta burst stimulation (TBS), in a group of amblyopic volunteers measuring several visual parameters: visual acuity, suppressive imbalance, and stereoacuity. METHODS: Thirteen volunteers aged 19 to 24 years, randomly split in 2 groups, underwent 1 session of continuous TBS, stimulating the right occipital lobe. The first group wi

Alterations in audiovisual simultaneity perception in amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a developmental visual impairment that is increasingly recognized to affect higher-level perceptual and multisensory processes. To further investigate the audiovisual (AV) perceptual impairments associated with this condition, we characterized the temporal interval in which asynchronous auditory and visual stimuli are perceived as simultaneous 50% of the time (i.e., the AV simultaneity window). Adults with unilateral amblyopia (n = 17) and visually normal controls (n = 17) judged the simultaneity of a flash and a click presented with both eyes viewing. The signal onset asynchrony

A quantitative study of fixation stability in amblyopia.

PURPOSE: To determine whether fixation instability contributes to reduced visual acuity in amblyopia, we compared fixation instability, quantified by the Nidek MP-1 microperimeter, in amblyopic and nonamblyopic children. METHODS: Participants were 89 children (5-17 years old) with strabismus (n = 31), anisometropia (n = 29), or both conditions (n = 29). Fixation instability was measured using the Nidek MP-1 microperimeter, which calculated horizontal and vertical eye position at 25 Hz as the child attempted steady fixation for 30 seconds. Fixation instability was quantified as the 95% bivaria

Development and treatment of astigmatism-related amblyopia.

Blur induced by uncorrected astigmatism during early development can result in amblyopia, as evidenced by reduced best-corrected vision relative to normal, in measures of grating acuity, vernier acuity, contrast sensitivity across a range of spatial frequencies, recognition acuity, and stereoacuity. In addition, uncorrected astigmatism during early development can result in meridional amblyopia, or best-corrected visual deficits that are greater for, or are present only for, specific stimulus orientations. Astigmatism-related amblyopia can be successfully treated with optical correction in chi

Structural and functional deficits in human amblyopia.

Many neuroimaging tools have been used to assess the site of the cortical deficits in human amblyopia. In this paper, we aimed at detecting the structural and functional deficits in humans with amblyopia, with the aid of anatomic magnetic resonance imaging (aMRI) and functional MRI (fMRI). We designed the visual stimulus to investigate the functional deficits, and delineated the V1/V2 areas by retinotopic mapping. Then we performed the brain parcellation to calculate the volume of the subcortical structure on each individual, and reconstructed the cortical surfaces to measure the cortical thic

Ultrasound biometry in the diagnosis of amblyopia in keratoconus.

Here, we describe a case in which A-scan ultrasound biometry was used to differentially diagnose the cause of reduced vision in a patient with keratoconus. A patient with keratoconus presented with reduced visual acuity in one eye, not improvable above 6/18 with specialist keratoconus contact lens fitting. This monocular amblyopia was attributed to previous anisometropic ametropia by the use of ultrasound biometry. The report demonstrates the usefulness of ultrasound biometry in the detection of amblyopia in circumstances in which a previous assessment of amblyopia is not possible. This inform

Human amblyopia: structure of the visual field.

Kittens raised with different kinds of abnormal early visual experience (monocular and binocular deprivation, convergent strabismus, eye rotation, asymmetric alternating occlusion, early callosal split) show systematic deficits in the nasal visual field of the affected eye. To test whether abnormal visual experience produces similar deficits in the human visual system, we measured the monocular visual field of humans with subnormal binocular vision (strabismic and anisometropic amblyopes, strabismics with alternating fixation). Eight amblyopes were tested with a computer-assisted static perime
