Gambling Disorder (GD) is characterised by a harmful, enduring, and recurrent involvement in betting-related behaviours. Therefore, GD shares similar biological mechanisms and symptoms to substance use disorders (SUD). Therefore, in this study, we chose the behavioural addictions group. During the examination and recruitment to the study, it turned out that all the people undergoing treatment for gambling addiction were also addicted to amphetamines, which is consistent with the biological mechanism related to cerebral neurotransmission. The aim of the study was to investigate the association

BACKGROUND: The opioid antagonist, naltrexone, has been shown to reduce the risk of relapse in amphetamine dependence, but the mechanisms behind this effect are not well understood. We aimed to investigate if naltrexone attenuates cue reactivity and craving in amphetamine dependence.
METHODS: Forty men with severe, intravenous amphetamine dependence were randomized to one dose of naltrexone (50 mg) or placebo. In a BOLD fMRI cue reactivity paradigm, they were exposed to drug-related and neutral films and gave subjective ratings of craving after each film. Twenty-nine patients left data of suf

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of positive plasma drug screening for cocaine or amphetamine in adult emergency department seizure patients.
METHODS: This prospective study evaluated consecutive eligible seizure patients who had a plasma sample collected as part of their clinical evaluation. Plasma was tested for amphetamine and the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine using enzyme-mediated immunoassay methodology. Plasma samples with benzoylecgonine greater than 150 ng/mL or an amphetamine greater than 500 ng/mL were defined as positive. Patient demograph

This review delves into the therapeutic applications of amphetamine-type stimulants such as lisdexamphetamine dimesylate, mixed amphetamine salts, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), dextroamphetamine, and phentermine. These compounds have been investigated for their potential in treating a range of psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), drug dependence, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obesity. Lisdexamphetamine dimesylate has shown promise in effectively treating ADHD symptoms in both children and adults. Additionally, it has been ex

The striatum of the brain coordinates motor function. Dopamine-related drugs may be therapeutic to patients with striatal neurodegeneration, such as Huntington's disease (HD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), but these drugs have unwanted side effects. In addition to stimulating the release of norepinephrine, amphetamines, which are used for narcolepsy and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), trigger dopamine release in the striatum. The guanosine triphosphatase Ras homolog enriched in the striatum (Rhes) inhibits dopaminergic signaling in the striatum, is implicated in HD and L-dopa-i

Background and Objectives: Pediatric ingestions of amphetamines used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are on the rise. Little data provide an amphetamine dose at which to refer pediatric unintentional ingestions to a healthcare facility for monitoring. We studied the dose at which unintentional ingestions of amphetamines develop symptoms and receive benzodiazepines. Methods: We performed a retrospective study from a single poison center from 1/1/2005 through 11/30/2018. We included single substance ingestion of amphetamine salts to treat ADHD in amphetamine-na

OBJECTIVE: Amphetamine use is a global public health problem. We examined hospitalisations in a cohort of 138 patients who presented with an amphetamine-related problem to an ED in 2005.
METHODS: A record linkage study, using the morbidity, ED and mortality databases in the Data Linkage Unit of the Department of Health, Western Australia. The main outcome measures were hospital separations and length of stay (LOS) 5 years before and 4 years after entry into the cohort.
RESULTS: One hundred and thirty patients (94%) with an amphetamine-related presentation had a link with the hospital morbidi

BACKGROUND: Rates of methamphetamine use and methamphetamine-related harms are increasing. Many people who use methamphetamine have concurrent non-amphetamine substance use disorders (SUDs). This study evaluated the prevalence of methamphetamine use in records of people receiving treatment for non-amphetamine SUDs, stratified by primary SUD.
METHODS: Repeat cross-sectional analysis of treatment records for alcohol, crack/cocaine, opioid, and cannabis use disorders in the United States (US). Data was obtained from the Treatment Episode Dataset-Discharges (TEDS-D), which contains information on

Abuse of amphetamine (AMP) and its derivatives, such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'Ecstasy'), 3,4-methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA, MDE), and 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) is an important public issue. Fatalities following ingestion of these substances are not infrequent in current forensic practice. The aim of this study was twofold. Firstly, considering the wide range of blood levels reported in fatalities, to provide insight into the interpretation of a quantified blood level and, secondly, to examine and discuss possible causes, mechanisms and manners of death. Clobenzorex (Asenlix) is an anorectic drug metabolized by the body to amphetamine, thus causing difficulty in the interpretation of amphetamine-positive drug tests. Previous studies have shown the parent drug and several metabolites are excreted in urine. Clobenzorex itself has been detected for as long as 29 h postdose using a detection limit of 1 ng/mL. Despite this fact, several amphetamine-positive samples (> or = 500 ng/mL) contained no detectable clobenzorex. Thus, the absence of clobenzorex in the urine does not exclude the possibility of its use. To more definitively assess the possibi

The use of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications during pregnancy has increased in recent years. An earlier article in this column examined whether psychostimulant medications, used to treated ADHD and related disorders, increase the risk of major congenital malformations in pregnancies with first trimester exposure to these drugs. This article examines whether amphetamines, methylphenidate, and atomoxetine exposure during early and late pregnancy are associated with other adverse gestational outcomes. One large and 4 small studies provided data relevant to the inquiry. I

BACKGROUND: People who co-use opioids and methamphetamine have high rates of incarceration. The criminal legal system is therefore increasingly tasked with providing substance use disorder treatment, including medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Unfortunately, treatment in carceral settings remains inconsistent and little is known about how people who co-use experience these treatment pathways. This qualitative study addresses this gap by analyzing how people navigate these overlapping systems of punishment and care.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 20 h

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience adverse social risk factors of health (SRFOH) are at risk for child welfare involvement, and those with opioid and/or methamphetamine use (O/MU) and mental health (MH) disorders are at risk for escalating negative outcomes like intravenous (IV) drug use and suicide. Just Care for Families® is a continuum of preventive care program that targets parental SRFOH, including those with O/MU and MH disorders. This protocol describes an observational trial of Just Care, spanning five rural counties that will examine malleable individual SRFOH (e.g., employment) and s

In recent years, use of cocaine and amphetamines and deaths associated with stimulants have been on the rise, and there are still no FDA-approved medications for stimulant use disorders. One contributing factor may involve heterogeneity. At the neurobiological level, dual dopamine dysfunction may be undermining medication efficacy, suggesting a need for combination pharmacotherapies. At the population level, individual variability is expressed in a number of ways and, if left unaddressed, may interfere with medication efficacy. This chapter reviews studies investigating medications to address

This study aimed to determine if current comorbid psychiatric disorders differ in adults with cocaine use disorder, other stimulant (primarily methamphetamine) use disorder, or both, and identify demographic and clinical characteristics in those with increasing numbers of comorbid disorders. Baseline data from a randomized controlled trial beginning in residential settings (N=302) was used. Mood disorders were present in 33.6%, and anxiety disorders in 29.6%, with no differences among stimulant use disorder groups. Panic disorder was more frequently present with other stimulant use disorder. T

Blunted anterior insula activation during interoceptive perturbations has been associated with stimulant (cocaine and amphetamine) use disorder (SUD) and is related to risk for and prognosis of SUD. However, little is known whether these interoceptive alterations extend to opioid use disorder (OUD). This exploratory study used the same experimental probe during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test the hypothesis that SUD and OUD exhibit interoceptive discrepancies characterized by subjective ratings and activation within the insula. Recently, abstinent individuals diagnosed wit
