BACKGROUND: Incremental lactate testing is widely used to characterize the lactate-velocity relationship in swimmers, but the highest-intensity stages increase testing burden and may be difficult to execute consistently.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a five-stage protocol can be reduced to three stages without materially changing seven lactate-derived velocity indices, and whether model complexity affects reconstruction.
METHODS: Ninety highly trained swimmers completed a 5 × 200 m freestyle incremental test at 80-100% of 200 m personal-best performance. Stage-4 and stage-5 lactate values

BACKGROUND: The accurate and safe assessment of physiological parameters, such as the highest oxygen consumption (V̇O2peak) and the lactate threshold (LT), plays a crucial role in optimizing training intensity and monitoring long-term progress, ensuring the safety of the trainees.
SOURCES OF DATA: Data were obtained during tests performed by 28 recreationally active young adults with varying levels and types of training. These individuals underwent a modified incremental Åstrand protocol for a treadmill test to exhaustion, during which their V̇O2peak and lactate threshold (Onset of Blood Lact

A ubiquitously available and accurate non-invasive ventilatory threshold assessment (NIVA) would substantially improve real-world performance assessment evaluation in both clinical and elite sports settings. We hypothesised that ECG-derived ventilatory phase analysis achieves reference-standard accuracy for second ventilatory threshold (VT2) determination. 74 healthy adults performed stepwise cardiopulmonary exercise testing with simultaneous lactate sampling to retrieve VT2 and lactate-based (Dmax; LT2) thresholds. Threshold agreement was evaluated for heart rate (HR) and exercise load (W) be

We study the estimation of aerobic threshold (AeT) and anaerobic threshold (AnT) using dynamical detrended fluctuation analysis (DDFA). Conventionally, the thresholds are estimated in laboratory settings, where the subject performs an incremental exercise test on a cycloergometer or treadmill. We compared DDFA-based thresholds (DDFAT1 and DDFAT2) with lactate thresholds (LT1 and LT2) and examined thresholds derived from theoretical and measured maximal heart rates (HR). The analysis was conducted on 58 subjects undergoing an incremental treadmill running test. Our findings indicate significant

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with spina bifida demonstrate less physical activity. Most of them are wheelchair users. It is important to control their physical fitness for instance their anaerobic performance. They need anaerobic performance to daily activities like transfers that require short and high intensity movements. The aim of this study was to assess anaerobic performance among children with spina bifida and to evaluate their results in relation to normative values from able-bodied peers, as well as to find appropriate, easy and feasible field-based tests measuring anaerobic p

Little information exists on the power output demands of competitive women's road cycle racing. The purpose of our investigation was to document the power output generated by elite female road cyclists who achieved success in FLAT and HILLY World Cup races. Power output data were collected from 27 top-20 World Cup finishes (19 FLAT and 8 HILLY) achieved by 15 nationally ranked cyclists (mean +/- SD; age: 24.1+/-4.0 years; body mass: 57.9+/-3.6 kg; height: 168.7+/-5.6 cm; VO2max 63.6+/-2.4 mL kg(-1) min(-1); peak power during graded exercise test (GXT(peak power)): 310+/-25 W). During incremental exercise, two thresholds may be identified from standard gas exchange and ventilatory measurements. The first signifies the onset of blood lactate accumulation (the lactate threshold, LT) and the second the onset of metabolic acidosis (the respiratory compensation point, RCP). The ability to explain why these thresholds occur and how they are identified, non-invasively, from pulmonary gas exchange and ventilatory variables is fundamental to the field of exercise physiology and requisite to the understanding of core concepts including exercise intensity, assessment, prescript

PURPOSE: The present study investigated the effects of variations in solar radiation on endurance exercise capacity and thermoregulatory responses in a hot environment.
METHODS: Eight male volunteers performed four cycle exercise trials at 70 % maximum oxygen uptake until exhaustion in an environmental chamber maintained at 30 °C and 50 % relative humidity. Volunteers were tested under four solar radiation conditions: 800, 500, 250 and 0 W/m(2).
RESULTS: Exercise time to exhaustion was less on the 800 W/m(2) trial (23 ± 4 min) than on all the other trials (500 W/m(2) 30 ± 7 min; P < 0.05, 25

Few studies have examined the effects of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage on power despite power being a key performance variable in a number of sporting events. The aim of this study was to examine changes in anaerobic power (30-second Wingate Test), isometric strength of the knee extensors and flexors, muscle soreness, and plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity following downhill running. Eight men performed a 40-minute downhill (-7%) run on a treadmill, and measurements were taken on 6 occasions (2 baseline and 0.5, 24, 72, and 120 hours postrun). A second group of men (n = 5) had the

BACKGROUND: In the FUEL (Fontan Udenafil Exercise Longitudinal) trial, a positive treatment effect was identified for outcomes at the ventilatory anaerobic threshold but not for the primary outcome, oxygen consumption (Vo2) at peak exercise. This disparate response may be explained by the physiologic challenge of improving peak Vo2 in participants with near-normal baseline exercise performance.
METHODS: Participants were divided into subgroups by baseline predicted peak Vo2 (<80% versus ≥80%). Treatment effect was evaluated in those with a baseline peak Vo2 <80% predicted and linear regressio

In this study we wanted to investigate if noninvasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing can be securely, accurately applied in patients with acquired cardiac valve disease pre- and postoperatively with any convenience. Furthermore, we looked if the cardiopulmonary exercise capacity (anaerobic threshold, etc.) was improved postoperatively (3 and 6 months) in 15 patients suffering from severe mitral valve disease as compared to the preoperative condition. The symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing was performed on a bike in a semi-supine position using a ramp program (+20 W/min). The fo

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is used in cardiology to grade the severity of heart failure and to assess its prognosis. However, it is unknown whether CPET may be a useful technique to rule out coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with anginal chest pain and left bundle branch block (LBBB). The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of CPET to identify CAD in these patients. A cohort of 90 patients with anginal chest pain, 45 with LBBB (group A) and 45 non-LBBB (group B), were studied with CPET and a single-photon emission computed tomographic myocardi

More than half of all pacemaker systems currently implanted function rate-adaptively. Our objective was to determine which patients benefit from rate-adaptive pacing in terms of improvement in maximum performance and aerobic capacity. Thirty patients with implanted accelerometer-driven, rate-adaptive pacemakers were examined ergospirometrically and patient symptom-limited while walking on a treadmill. The patients were divided into three groups depending on the intrinsic heart rate achieved during maximum workload: Group I achieved < or = 90 bpm, Group II achieved 90 to < or = 110 bpm, Group I

A pacemaker that adapts heart rate in response to the patient's metabolic requirements has been developed. The pacemaker uses breathing frequency and tidal volume as the indicators of physiologic demand. Maximal physical work capacity, anaerobic threshold, oxygen uptake (16 patients) and hemodynamic variables (9 patients) were assessed with fixed rate (VVI), atrial synchronous (VDT/I) and respiration-dependent ventricular (VVI-RD) pacing. All subjects attained their anaerobic threshold in stress tests with VVI pacing. The maximal physical capacity (p less than 0.001), work time to attain the a

Thirty-four patients were studied after corrective surgery for tetralogy of Fallot (mean follow-up 10 years) and compared with healthy matched controls. All underwent Doppler echocardiography, spirometry and treadmill exercise test. Post-operative cardiac catheterization had been performed on 26 (76%) of the patients and showed poor hemodynamic results in four (15%). Significant correlations of pressure gradients obtained from catheterization and estimated by Doppler echocardiography were right ventricular to right atrial (r = 0.77), pulmonary outflow (r = 0.75), pure valvular pulmonary outflo

H2 thresholds for microbial respiration of arsenate (As(V)) were investigated in a pure culture of Sulfurospirillum arsenophilum. H2 was consumed to threshold concentrations of 0.03-0.09 nmol/L with As(V) as terminal electron acceptor, allowing for a Gibbs free-energy yield of 36-41 kJ per mol of reaction. These thresholds are among the lowest measured for anaerobic respirers and fall into the range of denitrifiers or Fe(III)-reducers. In sediments from an arsenic-contaminated aquifer in the Red River flood plain, Vietnam, H2 levels decreased to 0.4-2 nmol/L when As(V) was added under anoxic c

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) is a non-invasive method of recording quantitative data from gas exchange and ventilation for the evaluation of oxidative metabolism at rest and during exercise. Determination of oxygen uptake (VO2) and carbon dioxide output (VCO2) describes the activity of anaerobic vs aerobic metabolism. An incremental exercise test measuring gas exchange, ventilation and lactate release was performed in healthy volunteers and in patients suffering from mitochondrial disorders. At rest as well as during exercise patients with mitochondrial disorders differ from healthy
