The results of the immune responses of immunised and chemoprophylactically treated calves to tick-borne (Boophilus microplus) challenge indicate that the system of immunisation was effective in protecting cattle against Anaplasma marginale, Babesia argentina (bovis), and B. bigemina. However, chemoprophylaxis was effective only against Babesia spp. but not against A. marginale. Both methods showed a substantial advantage over no control system when using native cattle breeds in a zone endemic for bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Based on the net economic gain per calf starting the experimen

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of light microscopy (LM) examination of blood smears and a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (MPCR) assay, in terms of their ability to detect cattle experimentally infected with Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale. Blood samples were collected from 32 intact, 1-2 year old, Holstein bulls, previous to and after simultaneous inoculation of culture-derived or field isolates of B. bovis- and B. bigemina-infected erythrocytes. To establish the triple hemoparasite infection, 16 of the bulls were also inoculated with a cal

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) have a significant economic impact on livestock. In Nepal, only limited information is available for the molecular identification of ticks and TBPs. This study aims to address this major challenge by providing data on the diversity of TBPs in Nepalese cattle, along with molecular sequences to facilitate accurate identification. A total of 145 cattle blood samples were collected from Pokhara (n = 70) and Madi (n = 75). The cattle were also examined for tick infestations, and the detected ticks were subjected to morphological identification, followed by mole

BACKGROUND: Natural service breeding is common in U.S. cow-calf operations. Diseases impacting bull reproductive performance have significant economic consequences for producers. Anaplasmosis may be an underappreciated cause of poor reproductive performance in bulls. The primary systemic effects of bovine anaplasmosis including anemia, fever, and weight loss, can all result in unsatisfactory reproductive performance. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate breeding soundness examination (BSE) outcomes and clinical changes in bulls during and upon resolution of clinical anaplasmosis.

Tick-borne diseases cause significant livestock losses worldwide. In Russia, information concerning single or mixed infections with different Anaplasma, Theileria and Babesia species in cattle is very limited. This study was conducted to determine the level of co-infection with protozoan pathogens (Theileria spp. and Babesia spp.) and rickettsial pathogens (A. marginale and A. phagocytophilum) in cattle in central Russia. Blood samples were examined with real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for A. marginale and A. phagocytophilum, and by amplifying the V4 hypervariable region of the 18

BACKGROUND: Ticks are hematophagous arthropods responsible for maintenance and transmission of several pathogens of veterinary and medical importance. Current knowledge on species diversity and pathogens transmitted by ticks infesting camels in Nigeria is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to unravel the status of ticks and tick-borne pathogens of camels in Nigeria.
METHODS: Blood samples (n = 176) and adult ticks (n = 593) were collected from one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) of both sexes in three locations (Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states) in north-western Nigeria and scree

The genus Anaplasma (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) comprises obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria that are mainly transmitted by ticks, and currently includes six species: Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma centrale, Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma platys, and Anaplasma ovis. These have long been known as etiological agents of veterinary diseases that affect domestic and wild animals worldwide. A zoonotic role has been recognized for A. phagocytophilum, but other species can also be pathogenic for humans. Anaplasma infections are usually challenging to diagnose, cl

CONTEXT AND PURPOSE: In a context of recent introduction of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick species in West Africa, the purpose of the authors is to estimate incidence density of cattle babesiosis either caused by Babesia bigemina or Babesia bovis, and cattle anaplasmosis. Incidence density represents how quickly a disease or a condition is occurring amongst a group of individuals at risk.
METHODS: The longitudinal and prospective study design took place in south, centre, east, west and north of Côte d'Ivoire. Cattle have been followed for 12 months. At the end of each month, each an

Rhipicephalus microplus ticks are vectors for multiple pathogens infecting animals and humans. Although the medical importance of R. microplus has been well-recognized and studied in most areas of China, the occurrence of tick-borne Rickettsiales has seldom been investigated in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. In this study, we collected 276 R. microplus ticks from cattle (209 ticks) and goats (67 ticks) in three locations of Guizhou Province. The Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia were detected by targeting the 16S rRNA gene and were further characterized by amplifying the key genes. One

Tropical theileriosis, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis are the most dominant tick-borne infections in North Africa where they cause significant economic losses in ruminants' industry. The aim of the present work was to study infections and co-infection patterns in 66 cattle with clinical signs of piroplasmosis and/or anaplasmosis in two localities, Beni Hamidene and Grarem Gouga, districts of Constantine and Mila (Northeast of Algeria), respectively. This study was conducted between early May and late September during four years 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021. PCR showed that the most frequent pathog

The study was conducted with the objective of estimating genetic and phenotypic parameters for tick (CRM) and Babesia bigemina (IBBi), Babesia bovis (IBBo), and Anaplasma marginale (IAM) burden in Angus female breed in Brazil. The sample group was composed of Angus females raised in herds located in a region of endemic instability for cattle tick fever in the state of Rio Grande Sul (RS), Brazil. The variance components were estimated using Bayesian inference and Gibbs sampling algorithm, considering a multi-trait animal model. Heritability estimates showed values of low magnitude, ranging fro

A method of immunization against anaplasmosis and babesiosis using minimum infective doses was developed under laboratory conditions. Stabilates of Anaplasma marginale stored at -60 degrees C were found infective when diluted 10-fold to 10(-3). Stabilates of Babesia argentina and Babesia bigemina stored under the same conditions were infective when diluted 10-fold to 10(-1). Intact calves inoculated with the above dilutions of stabilates developed moderate parasitemias and recovered from infection without treatment. There was an immune response to vaccination with the formation of specific ant

A serological survey was carried out in the Central American state of El Salvador to determine the distribution and prevalence of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis. the results suggest that the parasites are widely distributed throughout the country and prevalence rates of 78.5% for A. marginale, 70.5% for B. bigemina and 73.5% for B. bovis were obtained. Tick counts suggest that boophilus microplus is the main blood parasite vector. Epidemiological studies showed that initial infection with the 3 blood parasites occurs in most animals during the first 7 months of life. N

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a tick-borne pathogen that causes anaplasmosis. Increased incidences of this disease in Canada and cases of transfusion-transmitted anaplasmosis in the United States have been reported. Currently, there are no Health Canada licensed methodologies available for detection of A. phagocytophilum nucleic acids (NAs) in blood donors. Here we describe a method for NA extraction and detection of A. phagocytophilum in whole blood (WB) donor samples.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Plasmids carrying the A. phagocytophilum msp2 and gltA genes and genomic A. phagocytoph

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases undermine cattle fitness and productivity in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. In this West African country, cattle are challenged by numerous tick species, especially during the wet season. Consequently, several TBDs are known to be endemic in Nigerian cattle, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, cowdriosis and theilerioris (by Theileria mutans and Theileria velifera). To date, all investigations on cattle TBDs in Nigeria have been based on cytological examinations and/or on serological methods. This study aimed to ascertain the occur

Bovine anaplasmosis is a tick-borne, infectious, non-contagious disease caused by Anaplasma marginale, A. centrale, A. bovis, and zoonotic A. phagocytophilum. Recently, Anaplasma capra detected in goats was identified as a novel zoonotic pathogen. To determine whether A. capra can infect bovines, we used PCR to differentially diagnose Anaplasma spp. in 1219 South Korean cattle by performing multilocus gene typing and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis detected the 16S rRNA gene of A. bovis and four genes from A. capra in 12 (1.0%) a

The present study was designed to report the prevalence of spotted fever group Rickettsia and Anaplasma in ticks from Pakistan. To address this knowledge gap, ticks were collected from October 2019 to November 2020 from livestock hosts. Three hundred ninety ticks from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad were investigated for the presence of Rickettsia and Anaplasma. The collected ticks were subjected to molecular studies for detection and characterization of spotted fever group Rickettsia and Anaplasma in ticks from Pakistan. PCR amplification of the ompA gene was used for detection of Ri

This study investigated the circulation of Babesia, Theileria, and Anaplasma species in cattle and associated ticks across selected sites of Northern and Southern Benin. Between June 2021 and March 2022, blood samples from 81 cattle and 2311 specimens of ticks were collected. Blood samples and a selected number of ticks (n = 245) were analysed using molecular methods. Anaplasma spp. showed the highest prevalence in cattle (75.3%), with phylogenetic analysis suggesting the co-circulation of multiple species, including clusters related to Anaplasma platys, Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma ovis, an
