A neurosurgical view of anatomical variations of the distal anterior cerebral artery: an anatomical study.

OBJECT: The vascularization pattern of the anatomy of the distal anterior cerebral artery (ACA) remains a subject of debate. The authors provide detailed information about the distal ACA and shed light on issues concerning it that have not previously been adequately discussed. METHODS: Fifty adult human brains (100 hemispheres) were obtained during routine autopsies. Cerebral arteries were separately cannulated and injected with latex. The vascularization patterns of the cortical branches and the variations of the arteries were investigated. The authors found that the distal ACA supplied all

Anatomic variation and orgasm: Could variations in anatomy explain differences in orgasmic success?

Though the public consciousness is typically focused on factors such as psychology, penis size, and the presence of the "G-spot," there are other anatomical and neuro-anatomic differences that could play an equal, or more important, role in the frequency and intensity of orgasms. Discovering these variations could direct further medical or procedural management to improve sexual satisfaction. The aim of this study is to review the available literature of anatomical sexual variation and to explain why this variation may predispose some patients toward a particular sexual experience. In this rev

A unique anatomic variation of the piriformis muscle and its clinical considerations.

Variations in the anatomy of the piriformis muscle hold clinical significance because of their potential impact on sciatic nerve compression and piriformis syndrome. This case report documents a rare anatomical variation in which the piriformis muscle had two heads of origin and three muscle bellies, each with an independent tendon, identified during cadaveric dissection. This tripartite variant has implications for diagnosis, management, and surgical procedures involving the gluteal region.

Fraser syndrome with limb reduction defect: a rare and unique anatomic variation.

INTRODUCTION: Fraser syndrome, named after George Fraser, is an autosomal recessive disorder showing a highly variable interfamilial phenotypic variation, with malformations ranging from minor symptoms to lethal anomalies like renal agenesis, incompatible with survival. Limb reduction defects have not been reported to be associated with it. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old primigravida presented to the antenatal outpatient department with a level two targeted anomaly scan report suggestive of severe oligohydramnios with suspected renal agenesis. The cranial vault bones were compressed, and or

The relationship of anatomic variation of pancreatic ductal system and pancreaticobiliary diseases.

The aims of this study were to identify the morphological diversities and anatomical variations of pancreatic ductal system and to define the relationships between pancreatic ductal systems, pancreaticobiliary diseases, and procedure- related complications, including post-ERCP pancreatitis. This study included 582 patients in whom both pancreatic duct (PD) and common bile duct were clearly visible by ERCP. PD systems were categorized into four types according to the relationship between common bile duct and PD. In types A and B, Wirsung duct formed the main PD. In type C, Wirsung duct did not

Accessory lingual mental foramen: A case report of a rare anatomic variation.

INTRODUCTION: The mandibular nerve and the mental foramen have occasionally shown variations in its anatomy. This report aims to present a case of lingual mental foramen recognised on three-dimensional cone beam computed tomographic imaging (CBCT). CASE REPORT: Routine Orthopantomogram (OPG) and CBCT images were evaluated to assess the status of impact third molars in a 31-year-old female who had visited the dental clinics in our institution. The OPG image failed to reveal any anatomic variation in the position of the mental foramen. On tracing the course of the mandibular canal in CBCT image

Ansa pancreatica: an anatomic variation and a rare cause of acute pancreatitis.

INTRODUCTION: The ansa pancreatica is a rare anatomic variation of the pancreatic ducts. It is a communication between the main pancreatic duct (Wirsung) and the accessory pancreatic duct (Santorini). Recently, the ansa pancreatica has been considered as a predisposing factor in patients with idiopathic acute pancreatitis. CASE REPORT: \We report a case of non-alcoholic and non-biliary acute pancreatitis, in a 53-year-old patient. An ansa pancreatica was discovered in a post-operative cholangiography. CONCLUSION: A pancreatic duct variation, as the ansa pancreatica, can be diagnosed during a

[Inferior orbital fissure and groove: axial CT findings and their anatomic variation].

OBJECTIVE: To show imaging findings of inferior orbital fissure (IOF) and groove (IOG) on axial CT scans and to discover their anatomic variations, so as to avoid misdiagnosing them as orbital fracture. METHODS: 25 normal skull were used to investigate the configurations of IOF and IOG. Five skulls were performed axial CT scans. 20 normal orbital axial scans were studied as well. MPR and RT-3D reconstructions were used in this study. RESULTS: Skulls scans and normal orbital images on axial CT showed three sorts of findings: (1) single bony dehiscence between lateral and inferior walls; (2) f

Anatomic variation of the coracoacromial ligament: a macroscopic and microscopic cadaveric study.

The operative management of the subacromial impingement syndrome includes reconstruction in cases with ruptured tendons and enlargement of the subacromial space by arthroscopic or open resection of the coracoacromial ligament and acromioplasty. In nearly 20% of all cases, however, surgical treatment fails. This study was conducted with 124 cadaver shoulders of older specimens with a balanced male/female ratio. The coracoacromial ligament did not present homogenous morphologic characteristics. We found 25.8% of all ligaments undivided, 59.7% bipartite, and 14.5% consisted of three parts. The th

Anatomical Variations of the Optic Nerve in the Sphenoid Sinus: Do Ethnic Variations Matter?

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress syndrome is a leading cause of neonatal intensive care unit admissions for late preterm (34-36 weeks gestational age) and term infants (37-41 weeks). The risk for respiratory morbidity appears to increase after an elective caesarean delivery and might be reduced after antenatal corticosteroids. However, before considering antenatal corticosteroids for women at high risk of preterm birth after 34 weeks, the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome and the effect of delivery mode on this incidence requires further evaluation. Therefore, this study aimed to inve

Anatomic Variation of Posterior Superior Alveolar Artery: Review of Literature and Case Introduction.

The objective of this article is to review topography of posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA), and to present a case with visualization of a rare anatomic variation of PSAA. An electronic search was undertaken to identify articles about topography of PSAA in Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar databases, published between January 1977 and December 2017. Two animal studies, 8 cadaver studies, 18 cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) studies, and 2 review articles were found. The animal studies, cadaver studies, and review articles were excluded because they were not about topography of

Anatomic variation of subclavian artery visualized on ultrasound-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block.

Use of ultrasonography for performance of nerve and plexus blocks has made the process simpler and safer. However, at times, variant anatomy of the visualized structures can lead to failure of blocks or complications such as intravascular injections. This is especially true in case of novice operators. We report a case of a variant branch of subclavian artery, possibly the dorsal scapular artery passing through the brachial plexus nerve bundles in the supraclavicular area. Since this variation in anatomy was visualized in the scout scan prior to the performance of the block, it was possible to

Anatomic variation of the 5th extensor tendon compartment and extensor digiti minimi tendon.

Anatomic variation within the 5th extensor compartment may contribute to the development of tenosynovitis and limit the usefulness of the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) for tendon transfer. The purpose of this study was to assess the anatomic variation of the EDM tendon and its surrounding retinaculum, with particular attention to anatomical variation between specimens. Forty-one fresh cadaver hands were dissected. The length of the 5th compartment retinaculum was noted. The incidence of an intercompartmental septum was noted in each specimen as well as the type of tendinous attachments present

The persistent primitive hypoglossal artery: a rare anatomic variation with frequent clinical implications.

The case of a persistent primitive hypoglossal artery (PHA) in a 72-year-old man dead from myocardial infarction is presented. The autopsy showed the presence of a semicircular marginal infarct on the surface of the left cerebral hemisphere. The PHA anastomized the basilar artery origin with the left internal carotid artery, running through the left hypoglossal canal together with the hypoglossal nerve. The vertebral and posterior communicating arteries were hypoplastic. The PHA represented the morphological base on which the cerebral vascular insufficiency acted, following the generalized cir

Numerical variation of the celiac trunk and anatomical variation in origin and course of the dorsal pancreatic artery.

A numerical anomaly of the celiac trunk and anatomical variation in origin, and course of the dorsal pancreatic artery were encountered during a routine upper abdomen dissection of a 62-year-old male cadaver. The aim of this study was to describe a rare celiac trunk and dorsal pancreatic artery variation in detail, which can be a guide and precaution during operative procedures in this region. The abdominal aorta, its branches and the pancreas were cut and removed just above the celiac trunk and below the superior mesenteric artery to investigate the vascular distribution of the pancreas in de

Unique Anatomical Variations of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve.

This case study focuses on the atypical nerve contributions and branching patterns of the lumbar plexus in two human body donors at Midwestern University. It discusses their implications for pathology and surgical outcomes. Variations were identified in the anterior rami contributions and branching patterns of the lumbar plexus in both donors, predominantly in the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). While the typical contributions of LFCN include L2 and L3 spinal cord levels, the case donors received contributions only from L2 or from L1-L3 levels, with the nerves combining and separating
