The effect of the duration of propofol administration on recovery from anesthesia in cats.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of induction, a 30-minute, and a 150-minute infusion of propofol on the rate of recovery in cats. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, cross-over, prospective experimental study. ANIMALS: Six healthy adult spayed female cats (mean 4.3, range 2-7 years old) weighing 3.9 +/- 0.5 kg. METHODS: Cats received each of three treatments: anesthetic induction with propofol (T1), induction followed by a 30-minute infusion (T30) and induction followed by a 150-minute infusion (T150). Propofol infusions were increased or decreased to maintain a sluggish pedal withdrawal reflex. A

The Triservice anaesthetic apparatus. Trial of isoflurane and enflurane as alternatives to halothane.

Sixty male patients undergoing limb surgery were anaesthetised using a drawover technique with the Triservice apparatus. They were randomly allocated to receive trichloroethylene and one of three other volatile agents (halothane, enflurane or isoflurane) after thiopentone induction. Signs of inadequate anaesthesia were noted. The incidence of such signs was not significantly different in the three groups. Similarly, no qualitative difference could be demonstrated in the immediate recovery, but the recovery time was significantly shorter with enflurane.

Anesthesia for pediatric external beam radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: For very young patients, anesthesia is often required for radiotherapy. This results in multiple exposures to anesthetic agents over a short period of time. We report a consecutive series of children anesthetized for external beam radiation therapy (EBRT). METHODS: Five hundred twelve children < or = 16 years old received EBRT from January 1983 to February 1996. Patient demographics, diagnosis, anesthesia techniques, monitoring, airway management, complications, and outcome were recorded for the patients requiring anesthesia. RESULTS: One hundred twenty-three of the 512 children

Quality of recovery after arthroscopic meniscectomy with remimazolam or propofol anesthesia: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anesthetic technique may influence postoperative quality of recovery (QoR). Remimazolam may offer hemodynamic stability and favorable early recovery characteristics, but its effect on patient-reported QoR compared with propofol remains unclear. This is particularly relevant in minor orthopedic surgery, where QoR is a principal outcome. This randomized controlled trial compared postoperative QoR between propofol-based and remimazolam-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) using the QoR-40 questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty adult patients undergoing elective arthroscopi

Evaluation of Quality of Recovery With Quality of Recovery-15 Score After Closed-Loop Anesthesia Delivery System-Guided Propofol Versus Desflurane General Anesthesia in Patients Undergoing Transabdominal Robotic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Robotic technique of surgery allows surgeons to perform complex procedures in difficult-to-access areas of the abdominal/pelvic cavity (eg, radical prostatectomy and radical hysterectomy) with improved access and precision approach. At the same time, automated techniques efficiently deliver propofol total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with lower anesthetic consumption. As both above are likely to bring benefit to the patients, it is imperative to explore their effect on postanesthesia recovery. Quality of Recovery-15 (QoR-15) is a comprehensive patient-reported measure of the quali

Comparison of recovery in pediatric patients: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The recovery after general anesthesia is influenced by the choice of inhalational agent. Stimulations might make patient's agitate. However, the recovery using no touch technique might be safer. In this study, we compared the recovery time, awakening end-tidal concentration, and respiratory complications among inhalational anesthetics in pediatric patients using no touch technique, retrospectively. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subjects were pediatric patients aged 3 months to 11 years under general anesthesia using sevoflurane, isoflurane, or desflurane. Background, awakening end-tida

Ventilation with isoflurane in the Triservice anaesthetic apparatus: a comparison with halothane and trichlorethylene.

Recovery from anaesthesia using the Triservice anaesthetic apparatus with either isoflurane alone or halothane and trichlorethylene, was assessed by measurement of reaction time. There was no statistically significant improvement in recovery between patients who received low concentrations of isoflurane and those who received halothane and trichlorethylene. The mean profiles of systolic pressure and heart rate were significantly greater in the isoflurane group (P less than 0.05) than in the halothane/trichlorethylene group. Cardiovascular stability was maintained into the recovery period. The

Comparison of intravenous sedative-analgesic techniques for outpatient immersion lithotripsy.

Fifty-three unpremedicated outpatients undergoing elective extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy using an unmodified Dornier HM-3 lithotriptor received one of two different intravenous sedation-analgesia techniques. Both intravenous midazolam-alfentanil and fentanyl-propofol techniques produced conditions comparable to those achieved with epidural anesthesia during immersion lithotripsy. Of the two sedative-analgesic techniques, midazolam-alfentanil was associated with greater intraoperative amnesia (81% vs 38%), whereas fentanyl-propofol produced less cardiorespiratory depression and fewer po

Activation of astrocytes in the basal forebrain in mice facilitates isoflurane-induced loss of consciousness and prolongs recovery.

OBJECTIVES: General anesthesia results in a state of unconsciousness that is similar to sleep. In recent years, increasing evidence has reported that astrocytes play a crucial role in regulating sleep. However, whether astrocytes are involved in general anesthesia is unknown. METHODS: In the present study, the designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) approach was utilized to specifically activate astrocytes in the basal forebrain (BF) and observed its effect on isoflurane anesthesia. One the other side, L-α-aminoadipic acid was used to selectively inhibit astrocyte
