[Urticaria and angioedema caused by mastocytosis].

Mastocytosis in children are very polymorphic, most often remaining isolated, without an associated visceral lesion. Beside the phenomenon of "urtication" characteristic, papulo-nodular lesions of urticaria and angio-oedema during the mastocytosis are rarely met. In contrast, congestive signs with pruritus, dermographism, congestive erythema and general signs are frequent.

[Physical urticaria and angioedema in children].

Urticaria and physical angioedema frequency is hard to evaluate in children. In this series, we keep 53/1000. Physical urticaria is found in 36% of the cases and concerns cholinergic urticaria, urticaria to cold, idiopathic dermographism and mastocytosis, and delayed urticaria to pressure. The authors insist on the interest of the etiologic research in these forms of infantile urticaria.

Urticaria and angioedema: diagnosis and evaluation.

Because urticaria clears spontaneously in most patients, an extensive workup is not advised during the early weeks of an urticarial eruption. Whether and when to perform a screening workup or a more extensive workup depend on the degree of suspicion that the patient is ill, the urgency with which the patient presses for an answer, and the presence or absence of signs or symptoms that might lead the physician to pursue a diagnosis other than chronic idiopathic urticaria. Angioedema may occur with urticaria, and when it does, the prognosis is worse. Whereas urticaria manifests as circumscribed e

Acute and chronic urticaria and angioedema.

Urticaria and angioedema are clinical manifestations of various immunologic and inflammatory mechanisms, or they may be idiopathic. The respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts as well as the cardiovascular system may be involved in any combination. Patients with urticaria and/or angioedema can be classified based on pathophysiologic mechanisms into those with IgE-dependent or complement-mediated immunologic disorders, those with nonimmunologic disorders in which there is a direct effect on the mast cell or on arachidonic acid metabolism, and those whose condition is idiopathic. Donidalorsen for the treatment of hereditary angioedema.

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 50,000. Management of HAE brings challenges including the frequency of delivery of the medication, routes of medication delivery, cost of treatment and significant impact on quality of life for patients with HAE. Donidalorsen is the newest FDA-approved long-term prophylaxis medication for HAE that offers substantial benefits over its competitors. AREAS COVERED: A search of the current literature on donidalorsen was conducted using the PubMed and Cochrane libraries. In this review, we discuss t

Hereditary angioedema in children and adolescents.

Hereditary angioedema is a genetic disease with autosomal dominant inheritance and, in most cases, caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency. Patients present with recurrent edema affecting sub-cutaneous and mucus membranes with variable onset and severity. More than 50% of patients may become symptomatic before 10 years of age. Family history can help with the diagnosis; however, approximately 25% of the cases are de novo mutations. Biochemical diagnosis should be delayed until after 1 year of age. Children were often excluded from advances in therapy for hereditary angioedema since most of the new m

Angioedema of the tongue due to haloperidol.

BACKGROUND: Angioedema is an allergic reaction that has rarely been associated with haloperidol. There are 3 case reports in the literature, including one involving a child. Angioedema is mediated by increased capillary permeability and plasma extravasation, either related to histamine/IgE or bradykinin. When triggered by a medication, it typically presents within a few hours of medication administration. Histamine-mediated angioedema is generally treated with corticosteroids, antihistamines, and/or epinephrine. CASE PRESENTATION: We review a case of angioedema of the tongue in an adolescent,

Definition and classification of hereditary angioedema.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is defined as a rare genetic disease with recurrent episodes of localized bradykinin-mediated swelling of the deep tissues of the skin, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts that can be life threatening. Classification of HAE has evolved over time with our further understanding of clinical phenotypes, underlying causes, and available testing. In most cases, HAE is caused by a deficiency of C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) on the Serpin Family G Member 1 (SERPING1) gene, either through decreased amounts of C1-INH protein (C1-INH-HAE, type 1) or decreased function of

Angioedema in Stroke Patients With Thrombolysis.

Background and Purpose- Oral angioedema (OA) is a rare but life-threatening complication in patients with ischemic stroke receiving intravenous thrombolysis with r-tPA (recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator). This study intended to determine associations between thrombolysis-related OA and ischemic stroke lesion sites using a voxel-wise lesion analysis. Methods- Prospective registry data were used to identify ischemic stroke patients with thrombolysis-related OA between 2002 and 2018. For the study registry, ethics approval was obtained by the Ethics Committee of the Friedrich-Alexande

Urticaria and angioedema in pregnancy and lactation.

Urticaria is part of the management of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the puerperium in some women. The urticaria can be acute, chronic, or physical, presenting with whealing, angioedema, or both. Contact urticaria can occur. Acquired angioedema, usually with urticaria, must be differentiated from hereditary angioedema. An approach to management of these conditions in pregnancy is proposed.

Caffeine as a cause of urticaria-angioedema.

We report the case of a young woman presenting with recurrent urticaria. The episodes occurred both in and out of the workplace. On three occasions it presented as urticaria-angioedema, requiring emergency care on one occassion. A thorough clinical history along with serological and allergological tests allowed a diagnosis of caffeine-induced urticaria-angioedema. We advised the patient to follow a caffeine-free diet and to avoid all caffeine or methylxanthine-containing drugs. After two years of caffeine abstinence, she had not experienced any further episodes of urticaria-angioedema. Only a

Diagnosis and treatment of hereditary angioedema.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder affecting approximately 1 in 50000 persons. It causes frequent attacks of non-pitting, non-pruritic edema without urticaria, usually of the skin of the extremities, gastrointestinal tract, and upper airways. Gastrointestinal attacks may cause severe pain, and attacks in the laryngeal region may lead to asphyxiation and death. HAE usually begins in childhood or adolescence and persists throughout life. The majority of HAE cases are caused by mutations that result in low levels of functional C1-inhibitor (C1-INH), a serine proteas

Diagnosis and management of hereditary angioedema.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is characterized by sudden attacks of deep tissue swelling caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency. Swelling severity can vary from mild to severe, and some patients are at risk for disability and death from either asphyxiation or hypovolemic shock. Many HAE attacks are precipitated by trauma or stress. The extremities, genitalia, trunk, bowels, face, and larynx are commonly affected areas, but swelling can affect any single part of the body or multiple sites. Symptoms typically worsen over 24 to 36 hours and resolve within 48 hours. Because many symptoms of HAE overlap w

An update on childhood urticaria and angioedema.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review serves to address urticaria - both acute and chronic - as well as the differential diagnosis of urticarial syndromes in the pediatric population. We also wish to update the reader on progress in the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of urticaria. RECENT FINDINGS: Acute and chronic urticaria represent syndromes caused by a variety of triggers. Recent literature continues to describe subtypes of urticaria that may be differentially responsive to particular therapies. Recent associations highlight the need to fully evaluate patients for allergic and i

Angioedema associated with aspirin and rofecoxib.

OBJECTIVE: To report the probable association of angioedema with aspirin therapy and the selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor rofecoxib. CASE SUMMARY: A 44-year-old white woman, previously tolerant to aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), developed angioedema of the lips after ingesting two 325-mg aspirin tablets during one day. The reaction occurred 3 hours after taking the second aspirin and resolved within 3 hours. Two weeks later, the patient took a 25-mg rofecoxib tablet for a sore throat, and she developed angioedema 5(1/2) hours later. Although the wom

Update on urticaria and angioedema (hives).

The update on urticaria involves new concepts on the pathogenesis and the treatment of severe hives that are unresponsive to conventional treatments. A newly described autoantibody IgG against IgE receptor has been identified in some severe chronic urticaria patients. Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating agents are being used with increasing frequency by academic faculty and other physicians in severe chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU).
