In this article the authors apply Relational-Cultural Theory to pet therapy in correctional institutions. An important premise is that when pet therapy is used in prisons a symbiotic relationship develops between pets and prison inmates which, at the same time, improve their relationships with people themselves. Relational-Cultural Theory posits that relationships with individuals are not just a means to an end. Rather, good relationships promote growth and healthy development; they also cultivate reciprocal empathy. Hence, a major reason of suffering for most people is their experience of iso

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often characterized by dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and impaired social affiliation. Despite standard pharmacological treatments, a significant proportion of patients continue to struggle with treatment-resistant depression, necessitating the exploration of effective adjunctive strategies such as animal-assisted interventions (AAIs). The primary objective of this narrative review is to synthesize current neurobiological evidence regarding the efficacy of AAIs in MDD populations. Specif

Amyloids are filamentous protein aggregates that are associated with a number of incurable diseases, termed amyloidoses. Amyloids can also manifest as infectious or heritable particles, known as prions. While just one prion is known in humans and animals, more than ten prion amyloids have been discovered in fungi. The propagation of fungal prion amyloids requires the chaperone Hsp104, though in excess it can eliminate some prions. Even though Hsp104 acts to disassemble prion fibrils, at normal levels it fragments them into multiple smaller pieces, which ensures prion propagation and accelerate

Cardiac regenerative therapy has received attention as a potentially revolutionary approach for treating the damaged heart. The mouse model of myocardial infarction (MI) remains one of the most common tools for the evaluation of such new therapies. Typically, intramyocardial administration of cells or biomaterials in mice is performed by an open-chest surgical procedure, but less invasive delivery methods are becoming available. Echocardiography-based transthoracic myocardial injection is one such minimally invasive approach that can reliably deliver therapeutics to the target site with limite

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have revolutionized the field of reproductive medicine, offering hope to millions of individuals and couples facing fertility problems. From artificial insemination to cutting-edge gene editing techniques, ART enhances reproductive efficiency, transforming the landscape of reproductive medicine. While established techniques such as in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection are currently widely used, emerging technologies such as in vitro gametogenesis, gene therapies, and stem cell-based therapies are expanding the boundaries of what i

BACKGROUND: Patients with dementia commonly exhibit behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) such as depression, withdrawal, and agitation. These symptoms are known to significantly impact both mental and physical health, increase caregiving burdens, and lead to higher rates of hospitalization and mortality.
PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate using a systematic review and meta-analysis the effectiveness of dog-assisted therapy (DAT) in improving BPSD.
METHODS: In line with the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for systematic reviews of effectiveness, a literature s

3,4-methelenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) can be effective in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in controlled trials, potentially secondary to MDMA's effects on neural circuits implicated in fear and reward. Although anxiety, stress, and fear-based disorders involve maladaptation of the neural circuits processing fear, threat, and reward, no studies have tested MDMA's therapeutic efficacy on specific phobias. This article proposes a naturalistic biopsychosocial model of MDMA assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) informed by the neurobiological mechanisms of MDMA and the theoretical models of E

BACKGROUND: Aural cholesteatoma (tympanokeratoma) is a destructive epidermoid cyst arising within the temporal bone. In veterinary medicine, it is a historically rare and challenging entity. In recent years, reports of cases in animals have increased, and there is a trend towards minimally invasive approaches that appear promising for better outcomes.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to assimilate prior and new knowledge of cholesteatoma epidemiology, aetiology and clinical management in animals. We utilised this information to propose a staging scheme and basic treatment principles f

Objective: The mechanisms of structured exercise therapy (SET) in peripheral artery disease (PAD) are not clear. We have developed an SET module for our large animal model of ischemic myopathy. We hypothesized that SET would increase muscle strength and walking distance in this model. The objective was to discover the SET-dependent mechanisms involved in this process. Approach: After induction of unilateral hind limb ischemia, three animals were exposed to standard environmental enrichment (sedentary or SED) and four animals underwent SET thrice weekly for 4 weeks postoperatively. Walking, hin

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is a life-threatening disease of immunocompromised patients that requires aggressive therapy. Detection of the disease and monitoring of the therapeutic response during IPA are complex, and current molecular diagnostics are not suitably robust. Here, we explored proteomic profiles of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) specimens from a persistently neutropenic rabbit model of IPA. Three experimental arms, uninfected control animals, infected untreated animals, and animals infected and treated with ravuconazole/amphotericin B, were studied. Total proteins

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an illness caused by the ingestion of fish containing ciguatoxins. Dogs and cats are susceptible to CFP, but there is little published and much unknown about the condition in these species. This study aimed to document the treatment and outcome of canine and feline cases of CFP, and to look for prognostic indicators.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six years of medical records from the Esther Honey Foundation Animal Clinic (the only veterinary clinic in the Cook Islands during the study period) were reviewed to identify cases of CFP. Data relating

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are neurodegenerative disorders causing cognitive deficits and motor difficulties in the elderly. Conventional treatments are mainly symptomatic with little ability to halt disease progression. Gene therapies to correct or silence genetic mutations predisposing to AD or PD are currently being developed in preclinical studies and clinical trials, relying mostly on systemic delivery, which reduces their effectiveness. Imaging-guided stereotaxic procedures are used to locally deliver therapeutic cargos to well-defined brain sites

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (SESZ) is an uncommon zoonotic pathogen in humans but can cause severe joint infections. Reported cases are often linked to exposure to horses, dairy products, or raw pork, though infections may occur without an identifiable animal source.
CASE SUMMARY: An 84-year-old man with multiple comorbidities presented with acute left shoulder pain, fever, and chills. Synovial fluid aspiration yielded turbid fluid containing calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals, while Gram stain was negative. Despite empiric broad-spectrum antibiotics, his sym

The cellular expression of the genes encoding the neuropeptides enkephalin and substance P were examined in the caudate nucleus and putamen of parkinsonian 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated cynomolgus monkeys by in situ hybridization using radioactive antisense oligonucleotides coupled with computer-assisted image analysis. Behavioural evaluation of the animals revealed two levels of motor impairment; one group moderately impaired and the other severely disabled. A marked increase in the cellular content of preproenkephalin A messenger RNA was observed in medium-sized

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the commonest and most troublesome viruses of infancy. It causes most cases of bronchiolitis, which is associated with wheezing in later childhood. In primary infection, the peak of disease typically coincides with the development of specific T- and B-cell responses, which seem, in large part, to be responsible for disease. Animal models clearly show that a range of immune responses can enhance disease severity, particularly after vaccination with formalin-inactivated RSV. Prior immune sensitization leads to exuberant chemokine production, an excessi
