Over 150 species of earthworms are known from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, but many more are expected to live in this megadiverse biome. In the present study, we evaluated earthworm species occurrence and diversity in native and reforested areas in four National Forests in three Brazilian states: Três Barras National Forest (Santa Catarina), Irati and Piraí do Sul National Forests (Paraná) and Capão Bonito National Forest (São Paulo) using formalin and hand sorting methods. A total of 13 species were found, five exotic and eight natives (of which four were new, undescribed species), belo

Bites caused by pets or free living animal, including the so called exotic ones are a common cause of medical care request, although its real dimension has not been well defined in the local setting. This paper reviews the epidemiology of the topic placing emphasis in the initial approach and recommendations for the management of dog and cat bites. Due to increasing ownership or contact with other animals, management of bites from hamsters, mice, ferrets, rabbits, prairie dogs, monkeys, bats, lizards and bird bites is also discussed.

Turtoises are a great puzzle when it comes to their bacterial flora, the composition and structure of which are still unknown in details. Its component which has been best described so far is Salmonella spp., presumably due to the threat of reptile-associated salmonellosis in humans. This investigation tried to assess and characterize intestinal bacterial flora of imported tortoises found dead during quarantine. Most of the animals carried various serovars of Salmonella showing no antimicrobial resistance. Presence of multiresistant Escherichia coli was possibly a result of industrial breeding

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is widely used in human medicine to non-invasively estimate the size of the ovarian follicle reserve and to predict the ovarian response to gonadotropin stimulation in the context of assisted reproductive technologies (e.g., IVF). These applications of AMH testing have recently expanded to non-human mammals, with production animals, such as cows, goats and sheep being the primary focus of AMH research. However, few investigations have involved exotic species, and in particular carnivores. In this study, we measured AMH concentrations (0.078-3.078ng/mL) in archived

Accelerated frequency of recreational travel, globalization of business, and legal and illegal plant and animal trades have contributed to enduring introductions of exotic ticks into the United States. We herein report a new incursion of a female Rhipicephalus capensis on a human traveler returning to Connecticut from South Africa. Natural distribution of R. capensis is restricted to the Western Cape Province and southwestern portion of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, an area called the Fynbos Biome, and adults of this species primarily parasitize large, wild ungulate hosts. The article discusses the problem of the role of pets as a source of zoonotic infections, representing a hidden threat to modern society. Since the content is now very popular at home, both traditional and exotic animals, it is necessary to develop an interdisciplinary program to control the spread of zoonotic infections and the risks of their infection with people. Since the problem lies in the intersection of several disciplines, joint efforts of doctors, veterinarians, health organizers and laboratory specialists are necessary.

Three researches undertaken in Bari, with the aim of clarifying the epidemiological circles that determine the typhoid and paratyphoid endemia as well as the so-called salmonellosis minor, are reported here. The results obtained confirm the important role that eating shellfishes plays in spreading of typhoid cases in a sea-town like Bari. Furthermore, data obtained showed that the importing mechanism of infected animals, and then the slaughter-houses and the butcheries , are accounting for spreading of exotic Salmonellae in our country.

Suppose one of your clients from southern Florida starts talking about cattle egrets while you are vaccinating her cat. It seems she found a nearly dead egret near the cattle pen a few days ago, picked it up, and noticed a number of what looked like small ticks on the legs. Or, suppose you are called out to a small dairy in central Texas to look at some cows that are feverish and anemic. The first animal you examine has a few brown ticks attached just under the tail. Finally, perhaps you are looking at a lame tortoise for a reptile fancier, a new client, and find a large, colorful tick on a hi

BACKGROUND: Around 67 million pets are owned by households in the United Kingdom, and an increasing number of these are exotic animals. Approximately a third of pets are purchased through retail outlets or direct from breeders. A wide range of infections can be associated with companion animals.
OBJECTIVES: This study uses a systematic literature review to describe the transmission of zoonotic disease in humans associated with a pet shop or other location selling pets (incidents of rabies tracebacks and zoonoses from pet food were excluded).
DATA SOURCES: PubMed and EMBASE.
RESULTS: Fifty s

Pets are not a major source of human infections but they can transmit certain diseases to man. This transmission usually is complex, requiring close contact with pets or their excretions and frequently involves a breach of sound hygienic practice. In some instances, pathogens of animal origin are acquired inadvertently because infectivity can persist after evidence of gross contamination has gone. Veterinarians participate in controlling zoonotic diseases by encouraging rabies vaccination and hygienic treatment of pet feces and urine, by supporting community efforts toward responsible pet owne

A cross-sectional study was conducted to establish the seroprevalence of brucellosis and associated risk factors in indigenous and exotic breeds of cattle from 178 farms in Mbeya region. A total of 1211 cattle (929exotic cattle from 108 commercial farms and 282 indigenous cattle from 70 traditional farms) were tested for Brucella antibodies using the Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and competitive Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (c-ELISA) as screening and confirmatory tests, respectively. The overall animal-level seroprevalence was 9.3%; 11.3% (95% CI: 9.4-13.5) in indigenous cattle and 2.8% (

Only a few food-borne parasitic zoonoses have been reported in Indonesia. The most frequently observed food-borne parasitic diseases are: toxoplasmosis, taeniasis and cysticercosis. Little data are available on other parasitic zoonoses in Indonesia. Taeniasis has been reported in nine provinces. Toxoplasmosis in humans, with prevalence rates ranging from 1 to 60%, has been reported in 12 provinces; in animals, toxoplasmosis is known to occur throughout the country, with serologically positive cases in as many as 75% of animals examined. However, it is expected that other parasitic zoonoses, su

The arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) diseases of livestock have worldwide impact. The prevention of an introduction of an exotic disease and the control of one subsequent to an introduction will require the attention, cooperation, and support of the livestock industry, regulatory agencies, and researchers. The most effective protection of our livestock industries is to prevent the introduction of an exotic disease agent. This implies complete restriction of animal imports and exports. However, "zero risk" is an unacceptable option in today's world of internationally integrated and interdepend

Tongue worms (Pentastomida) are endoparasites causing pentastomiasis, an invasive disease representing a threat to exotic animals and humans. Animals acquire infection via the alimentary tract. In reptiles, the parasite is present in the lungs, resulting in symptoms from the respiratory system. Pentastomiasis may be asymptomatic, but nonspecific symptoms may occur at high parasite concentrations. Due to the harmful effects of many antiparasitic substances, tongue worm invasion in reptiles remains not fully treatable. Although pentasomiasis is rarely diagnosed in Poland, pentastomids were diagn

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease that affects domestic and wild cloven-hoofed animals. The disease is economically devastating due to severe production losses and restrictions on international trade. The emergence of novel FMD viruses in new locations can require different or new vaccines to control outbreaks. This report focuses on incursions of exotic viruses of serotypes A (A/EURO-SA topotype) and O (O/EURO-SA topotype) into Egypt in 2022. These viruses originate from South America and their introduction into North Africa poses an onward risk f

African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) are omnivorous mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa and popular exotic pets worldwide. Although their trade is illegal, it remains common in Brazil. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the health status of hedgehogs from illegal breeding sites, through hematological, biochemical and fecal analyses, skin pathogen screening and molecular assays for hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. and tick-borne pathogens. Real-time PCR assays for hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (16S rRNA) and conventional PCR assays for Theileria/Babesia spp. (18S rRNA) and

Introduced as an exotic species, Indian ring-necked parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis) are now established in urban areas of Japan in flocks exceeding 1000 birds. The release of exotic animals into the wild and the establishment of new populations have led to conservation and disease prevention challenges. With these parakeets sharing their habitat with humans, their feces accumulating in human living areas may pose a public health risk of transmitting Chlamydia psittaci. Herein, we investigated the prevalence of Chlamydiales in wild Indian ring-necked parakeets. We examined 66 faecal

Animal-transmitted diseases are remarkable not because they occur frequently but because they are almost always unsuspected and unrecognized. The physician who attends an ill veterinarian or zookeeper will immediately suspect an exotic disease. The pediatrician who attends the child who recently received a puppy for his birthday will not. Our public attitude toward animals as carriers of disease is utterly thoughtless. If a human were to urinate and defecate in the street or park he would be incarcerated without delay. Yet we tolerate and even encourage the same activity in dogs, which are kno

Akabane and bovine ephemeral fever viruses are exotic to the American continent. Both viruses are spread by insect vectors, and each causes disease of varying severity in food-producing animals. However, there are few other similarities between the agents and the diseases that they cause. They do not share the same insect vectors, the mammalian host range is different, and the clinical manifestations of virus infection vary markedly. Akabane virus is a cause of severe congenital defects, but adult animals show no signs of infection. In contrast, bovine ephemeral fever virus causes a febrile il
