Surface-directed engineering of tissue anisotropy in microphysiological models of musculoskeletal tissue.

Here, we present an approach to model and adapt the mechanical regulation of morphogenesis that uses contractile cells as sculptors of engineered tissue anisotropy in vitro. Our method uses heterobifunctional cross-linkers to create mechanical boundary constraints that guide surface-directed sculpting of cell-laden extracellular matrix hydrogel constructs. Using this approach, we engineered linearly aligned tissues with structural and mechanical anisotropy. A multiscale in silico model of the sculpting process was developed to reveal that cell contractility increases as a function of principal

Microstructural and Tensile Properties Anisotropy of Selective Laser Melting Manufactured IN 625.

The present study was focused on the assessment of microstructural anisotropy of IN 625 manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) and its influence on the material's room temperature tensile properties. Microstructural anisotropy was assessed based on computational and experimental investigations. Tensile specimens were manufactured using four building orientations (along Z, X, Y-axis, and tilted at 45° in the XZ plane) and three different scanning strategies (90°, 67°, and 45°). The simulation of microstructure development in specimens built along the Z-axis, applying all three scanning s

Probing the Magnetic Anisotropy of Co(II) Complexes Featuring Redox-Active Ligands.

Coordination complexes that possess large magnetic anisotropy (otherwise known as zero-field splitting, ZFS) have possible applications in the field of magnetic materials, including single molecule magnets (SMMs). Previous studies have explored the role of coordination number and geometry in controlling the magnetic anisotropy and SMM behavior of high-spin (S = 3/2) Co(II) complexes. Building upon these efforts, the present work examines the impact of ligand oxidation state and structural distortions on the spin states and ZFS parameters of pentacoordinate Co(II) complexes. The five complexes

Cyano-Based Materials with Giant Optical Anisotropy and Second Harmonic-Generation Effect.

It is a huge challenge to achieve giant optical anisotropy (e.g., birefringence) over a wide region from infrared (IR) to ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. This is mainly due to the lack of ideal optical motifs, which should have giant structural anisotropy with a wide transparent range. Especially in the field of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, polar motifs with giant optical anisotropy are extremely scarce, but they are favorable to exhibit strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect and phase-matching capacity. On the basis of analysis of microstructure and macro optical property, in thi

Investigation of In Vivo skin stiffness anisotropy in breast cancer related lymphoedema.

There is a limited range of suitable measurement techniques for detecting and assessing breast cancer related lymphoedema (BCRL). This study investigated the suitability of using skin stiffness measurements, with a particular focus on the variation in stiffness with measurement direction (known as anisotropy). In addition to comparing affected tissue with the unaffected tissue on the corresponding site on the opposite limb, volunteers without BCRL were tested to establish the normal variability in stiffness anisotropy between these two corresponding regions of skin on each opposite limb. Multi

Biomechanical analysis of C4-C6 spine segment considering anisotropy of annulus fibrosus.

Based on computed tomography scanning images of human cervical spine, this paper develops a detailed and anatomically accurate finite element model for C4-C6 motion segment to investigate its biomechanical responses. The model includes vertebrae, intervertebral disc, and various ligaments. The annulus fibrosus is characterized by using a previously developed nonlinear, anisotropic, hyperelastic fiber-reinforced model with fiber-matrix shear interaction considered. Other materials are simplified as linear or nonlinear elastic. The proposed cervical model is first validated by comparing numerica

How do anisotropy and age affect fatigue and damage in cancellous bone?

The fatigue behaviour of materials is of particular interest for the failure prediction of materials and structures exposed to cyclic loading. For trabecular bone structures only a few sets of lifetime data have been reported in the literature and structural measures are commonly not considered. The influence of load contributions not aligned with the main physiological axis remains unclear. Furthermore age effects on the fatigue behaviour are not well described. In the present study, different groups of human vertebral cancellous bone were exposed to cyclic compression. The inital modulus and

Magnetic Anisotropy and Spin Coupling in a Cobalt(II) Dimer with Bioinspired Bridges.

Cobalt-(II) metal complexes constitute a versatile platform for investigating how coordination geometry and spin-orbit coupling determine their magnetic properties. Although numerous cobalt-(II) coordination complexes have been reported in recent literature, only a limited number exhibit comprehensive and quantitatively reliable magnetic characterization. In this work, we investigate the magnetic properties of the hexacoordinated cobalt dimer [Co2(μ-L1H)2(μ-H2O)2(H2O)4]-4NO3·2H2O, where L1H denotes the adenine bridging ligand. The hexacoordinated environment stabilizes a high-spin S = 3/2 conf

Best for the Eye, Not for the Algorithm: Anisotropy in Fitting Atomic Models in Cryo-EM.

Most atomic model refinement methods in cryo-EM fit models to the reconstructed density map and effectively treat Fourier voxels as equally reliable. However, the uncertainty in the estimation of Fourier coefficients is highly anisotropic, primarily due to the common variability in SNR in different frequency shells and the distribution of particle images across viewing directions. First-principles arguments suggest that atomic models should be fitted to particle images rather than volumes; this strategy may be computationally demanding. We show that under certain modeling choices, fitting atom

Polarizability of particles with combined chemical and geometrical anisotropy: The case of Janus ellipsoids.

While various factors influence the polarizability of colloidal particles, the concurrent effects of chemical and geometric anisotropy have yet to be quantified. We address this gap by investigating Janus ellipsoids with aspect ratios ranging from 1.5 to 5, which serve as model systems for particles with combined anisotropy. Electrorotation measurements reveal three distinct relaxations due to concentration polarization, induced charge polarization, and the Maxwell-Wagner-O'Konski mechanism. Surface charge, particle aspect ratio, and medium conductivity govern the observed behavior, with condu

Impact of Cr doping on Hall resistivity and magnetic anisotropy in SrRuO3thin films.

Hall effects, including anomalous and topological types, in correlated ferromagnetic oxides provide an intriguing framework to investigate emergent phenomena arising from the interaction between spin-orbit coupling and magnetic fields. SrRuO3is a widely studied itinerant ferromagnetic system with intriguing electronic and magnetic characteristics. The electronic transport of SrRuO3is highly susceptible to the defects (O/Ru vacancy, chemical doping, ion implantation), and interfacial strain. In this regard, we investigate the impact of Cr doping on the magnetic anisotropy and the Hall effect in

Origin and regulation of triaxial magnetic anisotropy in the ferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr monolayer.

Magnetic anisotropy plays a vital role in stabilizing the long-range magnetic order of two-dimensional ferromagnetic systems. In this work, using the first-principles method, we systematically explored the triaxial magnetic anisotropic properties of a ferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr monolayer, which is recently exfoliated from its bulk. Further analysis shows that the triaxial magnetic anisotropic properties originate from the coexistence of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (shape anisotropy) and the spin-orbit coupling interaction (magnetocrystalline anisotropy). Interestingly, the sh

Criticality of the O(2) model with cubic anisotropies from nonperturbative renormalization.

We study the O(2) model with Z_{4}-symmetric perturbations within the framework of the nonperturbative renormalization group (RG) for spatial dimensionality d=2 and 3. In a unified framework we resolve the relatively complex crossover behavior emergent due to the presence of multiple RG fixed points. In d=3 the system is controlled by the XY, Ising, and low-T fixed points in the presence of a dangerously irrelevant anisotropy coupling λ. In d=2 the anisotropy coupling is marginal and the physical picture is governed by the interplay between two distinct lines of RG fixed points, giving rise to

Corpus callosum size and diffusion tensor anisotropy in adolescents and adults with schizophrenia.

The corpus callosum has been implicated as a region of dysfunctional connectivity in schizophrenia, but the association between age and callosal pathology is unclear. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) were performed on adults (n=34) and adolescents (n=17) with schizophrenia and adult (n=33) and adolescent (n=15) age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The corpus callosum was manually traced on each participant׳s MRI, and the DTI scan was co-registered to the MRI. The corpus callosum was divided into five anteroposterior segments. Area and anisotropy were calcul

Fluorescence anisotropy of tracheal and oropharyngeal aspirates as an indicator of lung disease in neonates.

Fluorescence anisotropy was assessed in tracheal and oropharyngeal aspirates to evaluate its use in the diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome. Samples from 31 neonates at birth were purified by using Sephacryl S-300 column chromatography. After the addition of the molecular probe, 1,6-diphenyl 1,3,5 hexatriene fluorescence was measured and anisotropy calculated. Ten neonates with normal respiratory function had a mean anisotropy (+/- SD) of 0.226 +/- 0.023. Fourteen infants with a diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome had a mean anisotropy of 0.260 +/- 0.014 (p < 0.001). Seven neonat

Magnetized joystick with dual-anisotropy for high-capacity wearable human-machine interactions.

One of the urgent demands for flexible and wearable sensors is to achieve single-channel, less-sensor, and multi-output for effective communications. However, expansion of signal capacity on a single interface often requires sensor arrays, which significantly increases the complexity in electrode layout and multiple device design. In this work, we developed a flexible magnetized joystick (FMJ) with structurally induced eigenfrequency anisotropy by applying laser cutting process to a raw magnetized cubic. Using an eigenfrequency-polarity dual-anisotropy addressing method, we show that single FM

Programming flow anisotropy in hydrodynamic metamaterials via series-parallel equivalent fluidic networks.

Precise microflow control underpins microfluidic technologies in precision medicine, yet conventional approaches rely on anisotropic materials or external fields, limiting fabrication simplicity and scalability. Unlike transformation-based or data-driven approaches, we demonstrate that flow anisotropy can be programmed through the layered organization of locally homogeneous, isotropic media via a series-parallel equivalent fluidic network (SPEFN) realized as single-medium metamaterials (SMMs). SPEFN provides an analytically invertible mapping from network topology to the macroscopic effective-

Colossal infrared nonlinear optical anisotropy in a 2D charge-transfer Mott insulator.

Mott insulators are a unique class of materials whose insulating state originates from strong electron-electron correlations: the interactions localize charge carriers, and the resulting on-site Coulomb repulsion opens a charge gap, fundamentally different from conventional insulators, making these systems an exceptional platform for exploring exotic physical phenomena. Significantly, the interplay between strong correlations and charge transfer not only stabilizes the antiferromagnetic ground state but also endows the material with enriched properties, particularly in optics. Herein, we demon

Proximity Induced Magnetic Anisotropy and Trefoil Fermiology in Monolayer FeCl2/Bi(111).

Interfaces between magnetic and non-magnetic materials play a crucial role in various magnetic heterostructures. The emergence of 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets has introduced new opportunities for exploring proximity effects in vdW heterostructures. While the influence of magnetic layers on nearby non-magnetic materials has been widely studied, it remains unclear whether non-magnetic substrates can similarly modulate the intrinsic magnetic properties of 2D magnets, particularly their magnetic anisotropy. In this work, by analyzing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra of an epitaxially gr
