DETECTION OF COXIELLA BURNETII INFECTION IN A SAHARAWI DORCAS GAZELLE (GAZELLA DORCAS NEGLECTA).

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever, can infect a wide range of host species, but limited information exists on the occurrence and implications of infection in wild species. This study describes a natural infection in a population of dorcas gazelles ( Gazella dorcas ) from a zoo. A 9-yr-old male Saharawi dorcas gazelle ( Gazella dorcas neglecta) tested positive on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and fecal polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Despite treatment with oxytetracycline, the animal did not clear the infection after 6 mo, as confirmed by a PCR test on a semen sampl

A description of the immature stages of Kirkioestrus minutus (Rodhain & Bequaert, 1915) (Diptera: Oestridae), and the life cycle and seasonal prevalence of this fly in blue wildebeest.

Descriptions of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar larvae and the puparium of Kirkioestrus minutus are gives. First instar larvae, which have not previously been described, can be distinguished from other oestrid larvae by the ventral spinulation of segments IV-XII and the spinulation of the anal protuberance. Of 55 blue wildebeest examined in the Kruger National Park all but two 1-month-old and one 2-month-old animals were infested. First stage larvae are probably deposited in or on the nostrils and may develop within 30 days, initially in the nasal passages and then in the frontal sinuses to mature

[Bacterial and viral epidemics of zoonotic origin; the role of hunting and cutting up wild animals].

Since the Prehistoric times hunting has been a vital activity for man. However, this may account for the contamination of the hunter, his family and relatives. Infections may occur by direct contact with blood or tissues of infected animal during handling and cutting up preys and when preparing or eating meat, or also when bitten by injured animal. Apes and antelopes hunting in sub-Saharan Africa proves to be particularly important since it has been well established that the recent or previous emergence of some viral zoonosis (Ebola, Aids, T lymphotropic viruses and Monkeypox) resulted from hu

Effect of twin or singleton pregnancy on progesterone levels in the blood of Reem gazelles (Gazelle subgutturosa marica) at different stages of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The progesterone (PBP) hormone is responsible for maintaining pregnancy. By measuring its level, a single or twin pregnancy in deer can be diagnosed based on its blood PBP concentration. AIM: This study aimed to determine plasma blood PBP levels in Reem gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa marica). METHODS: Thirteen pregnant females (G. subgutturosa marica) aged 2-4 years were used. The experiments were conducted from October 2021 to April 2022 in Babylon, Iraq. Jugular venipuncture was used to collect ten milliliters of EDTA-free blood samples. The samples were then centrifuged at 3,0

A new species of sucking louse (Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Linognathidae) from Günther's Dikdik (Madoqua guentheri) in Kenya.

Linognathus samburi n. sp. is described from adult male and female specimens collected from a juvenile female Günther's dikdik (Madoqua guentheri) live-trapped near Olturot Village, Samburu district (Rift Valley Province) in northern Kenya. The new species is distinguished from other species of Linognathus including Linognathus geigyi and Linognathus damarensis, both of which parasitize Kirk's dikdik (Madoqua kirkii). A dichotomous key to the species of Linognathus that are known to parasitize dikdiks is included.

Vasculitis secondary to presumptive leptospirosis treated with long-term corticosteroids in a captive lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis australis).

A 2-yr-old female lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis australis) was presented for lethargy. Empirical antibiotic treatment appeared to improve its clinical signs, although no etiology for the symptoms was determined. The kudu again presented with lethargy, diffusely swollen limbs, and subcutaneous ecchymoses of 1 day's duration after completion of the initial therapy. Vasculitis secondary to presumptive leptospirosis infection was diagnosed based on a skin biopsy and decreasing paired serologic titers for Leptospira grippotyphosa. The vasculitis was responsive to intramuscular antibiotic therap

Blood parasites of some wild bovidae in Botswana.

Blood smears from a total of 282 wild Bovidae from Ngamiland, Botswana were examined for the presence of blood parasites. The following species were sampled: 190 African buffalo, 23 impala, 10 blue wildebeest, 18 tsessebe, 1 eland, 13 lechwe, 16 kudu and 11 sable antelope. In addition, blood from 36 of the above antelope and from a further 48 buffalo was inoculated into rodents to test for the presence of trypanosomes. An anaplasm morphologically indistinguishable from Anaplasma marginale Theiler, 1910 was found in 28,4% of buffalo. The incidence of detectable cases of A. marginale infection i

ATTEMPTED SURGICAL CORRECTION OF A PERSISTENT RIGHT FOURTH AORTIC ARCH IN A JUVENILE ROTHSCHILD'S GIRAFFE (GIRAFFA CAMELOPARDALIS ROTHSCHILDI).

A 5-mo-old female Rothschild's giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) presented for regurgitation. Esophagoscopy at 24 wk of age revealed a markedly dilated cranial esophagus with a tight stricture at the level of the heart base consistent with a vascular ring anomaly. Surgical exploration confirmed persistent right fourth aortic arch with ductus originating from left subclavian artery at its junction with the aorta and left subclavian artery. The patent ductus arteriosus was surgically ligated. The procedure was complicated by limited surgical access and vascular friability resulting i

Axenic in vitro culture and molecular characterization of Giardia duodenalis from red deer (Cervus elaphus) and Thomson's gazelle (Gazella thomsonii).

Giardia duodenalis is an ubiquitous flagellate that infects humans and many species of animals. This species exhibits great biotypic and genetic diversity. In the present study, we established short- and long-term in vitro cultures of G. duodenalis trophozoites originating from red deer and Thomson's gazelle (artiodactyls) and genetically characterised the isolates by their glutamate dehydrogenase and triose phosphate isomerase gene sequences. The G. duodenalis isolates from red deer and the gazelle represented assemblages A (AIII sub-assemblage) and B. In conclusion, G. duodenalis assemblages

Massive outbreak of anthrax in wildlife in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, Zimbabwe.

A massive outbreak of anthrax in the wildlife of the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in Zimbabwe between August and November 2004 resulted in the death of almost all the reserve's estimated 500 kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros). Other species badly affected were nyala (Tragelaphus angasi), bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus), waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) and roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus), which suffered losses of approximately 68 per cent, 48 per cent, 44 per cent and 42 per cent of their populations, respectively. Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) were also badly affected and although their populatio

Studies on the genus Setaria Viborg, 1795 in South Africa. II. Setaria scalprum (Von Linstow, 1908) and Setaria saegeri (Le Van Hoa, 1961).

Setaria scalprum (Von Linstow, 1908) and Setaria saegeri (Le Van Hoa, 1961) are closely related filarid species that occur in the smaller antelope of Africa. Material previously collected from common dulker, Sylvicapra grimmia, steenbok, Raphicerus campestris and grysbok, Raphicerus melanotis, from several localities in the northern and eastern regions of South Africa was re-examined and measurements of adult worms were compared with those given in the original descriptions of the species. Scanning electron microscopy of the anterior and posterior regions of the female worms confirmed the vali

Detection of Babesia spp. in free-ranging Pukus, Kobus vardonii, on a game ranch in Zambia.

Babesia spp. were detected from 4 asymptomatic pukus captured on a game ranch in central Zambia in October 2008. Blood smears were examined in 4 species of aymptomatic free-ranging antelopes, namely the puku (Kobus vordanii), reedbuck (Redunca arundinum), bushbuck (Tragelaphus sylvaticus), and kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), and showed the presence of Babesia parasites only in the puku. In the puku, the prevalence of babesiosis was estimated at 33.3% (n = 12), while the overall prevalence in all examined animals was 8.5% (n = 47). The parasites showed morphological characteristics of paired r

INSIG1 parallel substitution drives lipid/sterol metabolic plasticity mediating desert adaptation in ungulates.

Desert ungulates, such as Camelus bactrianus and Hippotraginae antelopes, exhibit extraordinary adaptation to extreme environment. Deciphering these genetic adaptations is critical for understanding evolutionary resilience under climate change. Here, we generate a chromosome-level genome for domestic Bactrian camel and integrate comparative genomics analyses to uncover genomic adaptation in arid-desert ungulates. We find elevated molecular evolution rates with intensified positive selection among desert-adapted lineages. Convergent positively selected genes are mainly involved in energy metabo

Evaluation of Barricade® to enhance survival of entomopathogenic nematodes on cowhide.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), Steinernema riobrave and Heterorhabditis floridensis are under evaluation for eradication of the southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus microplus infesting nilgai antelope, in South Texas. Cattle fever ticks are a significant threat to the U.S. livestock industry. Although they have been eradicated in the U.S. they frequently re-invade along the Texas-Mexico border. Remotely operated field sprayers have been developed to directly treat nilgai antelope with EPNs as they transit fence crossings and as they contact wetted foliage and soil from the surrounding

Computed tomographic features of severe horn infection in a male Scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah).

A 3-year-old male Scimitar-horned oryx presented for evaluation of an acutely deformed right horn with right head tilt and right facial pain. Computed tomographic evaluation revealed an increased volume of central fluid/soft tissue attenuation with gas-attenuating foci within the right horn. The right horn was amputated at the right horn base. Imaging and histopathologic features were consistent with emphysematous osteomyelitis. Following treatment, the patient returned to normal behavior. This is the first veterinary report describing the computed tomographic features of a horn infection in a

An Outbreak of Sarcoptic Mange in Free-Ranging Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx) in the United Arab Emirates, and Treatment with Ivermectin-Medicated Pelleted Feed.

At a visit to an unfenced desert conservation reserve in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in February 2022, severe skin disease was noted among resident Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), manifesting as dark grayish to black bark-like thickened skin. Between and 45% and 60% of the oryx showed unrest and pruritus. Sarcoptes scabiei was detected at necropsy of six adult animals. Treatment with ivermectin-medicated pellets at 0.3 mg/kg estimated body weight over two periods of 7 d with a 14-d interval between treatments resulted in improved body and skin condition and hair regrowth. Rabies in kudu: Revisited.

Rabies infects all mammals; however, transmission cycles are only maintained in certain bat and carnivore species. The high incidence of rabies in Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) observed in Namibia for over 40 years has led to postulation that independent virus transmission is occurring within this antelope population. We have analysed extensive experimental, epidemiological, phylogeographic and deep sequence data, which collectively refute maintenance of an independent rabies cycle in kudu. As rabies in kudu continues to have a negative impact on the Namibian agricultural sector, mea

Detection of estrus in Indian blackbuck: behavioural, hormonal and urinary volatiles evaluation.

The determination of the reproductive status is one of the most important factors for effective wild life conservation and management, and effective use of assisted reproductive techniques like artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer depends on the knowledge of the basic reproductive physiology. In this context the reproductive status of female blackbucks (Antelope cervicapra L.) was assessed by behaviour and determination, sex steroid hormones in faeces and urinary volatile compounds. The male and female blackbucks exhibited as many as 31 different reproductive/courtsh
