Anthocyanin incorporated pectin/sericin biofilms for food packaging and shrimp freshness monitoring.

Sensing biofilms for food preservation and spoilage monitoring have garnered increasing attention due to their promising applications in food safety. In this study, biodegradable films composed of pectin and sericin, incorporating anthocyanins from butterfly pea flowers (PSA), were successfully developed for preserving bananas and monitoring shrimp freshness. Optimal biofilm formulation was achieved using 10% anthocyanins, 40% glycerol, and a fabrication temperature of 70 °C. Functionally, the PSA biofilms demonstrated notable antioxidant capacity with DPPH and H₂O₂ radical scavenging activiti

DgMYB4 orchestrates anthocyanin modification and acyl-glucose donor biosynthesis in Delphinium grandiflorum.

To elucidate the seasonal variation in flower coloration of Delphinium grandiflorum cv. F1 Super Platinum Blue, we performed transcriptome analysis and heterologous expression in Nicotiana tabacum, and molecular interaction assays. Flowers in early summer (PB1) displayed deeper blue coloration and more than 8-fold higher total anthocyanin content than those in early spring (PB2). In PB1, cyanodelphin was the major anthocyanin, whereas both cyanodelphin and violdelphin accumulated in PB2. Transcriptome data revealed that DgMYB4, an R2R3-MYB, was significantly upregulated in PB1. Ectopic express

Ethylene-responsive CmERF3-CmMYB4 cascade suppresses anthocyanin biosynthesis in Chrysanthemum ×morifolium.

Anthocyanins are the primary determinants of floral pigmentation in Chrysanthemum ×morifolium, and ethylene acts as a key regulator of their biosynthesis. Although the ethylene-mediated regulatory circuitry is functionally important, its underlying mechanism in chrysanthemum has remained unclear. In this study, we identified CmMYB4 as a transcriptional repressor that directly suppresses the expression of key anthocyanin biosynthetic genes, including CmDFR (dihydroflavonol 4-reductase), CmUFGT (flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase), and Cm3MaT (anthocyanin 3-O-glucoside-6″-O-malonyltransferase). Challenges in Nanofiber Formation from NADES-Based Anthocyanin Extracts: A Physicochemical Perspective.

This study explores the challenge of using anthocyanin-rich natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) extracts to produce electrospun nanofibers for biodegradable freshness indicators. Red cabbage was extracted with two choline chloride-based NADESs (with citric or lactic acid), modified with 10-50% ethanol to lower viscosity, and compared with a standard 50% ethanol-water solvent. The citric acid NADES with 30% ethanol gave the highest anthocyanin yield (approx. 0.312 mg/mL, more than 20 times higher than the ethanol extract at approx. 0.014 mg/mL). For fiber fabrication, a polymer carrier blend

Persulfidation of transcription factor MYB10 inhibits anthocyanin synthesis in red-skinned pear.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signaling molecule that delays color change during fruit ripening. Whether H2S affects anthocyanin biosynthesis in red-skinned pears (Pyrus L.) remains unclear. Here, we found that H2S substantially inhibits anthocyanin accumulation in red-skinned pears and the expression of several genes encoding transcription factors is affected in response to H2S signaling. For example, PyMYB10 and PyMYB73 were down-regulated, whereas PyMYB114 and PyMYB6 were up-regulated. Bioinformatics analysis showed that PyMYB73 and PyMYB6, each containing an EAR motif, may negatively

Current knowledge of anthocyanin metabolism in the digestive tract: absorption, distribution, degradation, and interconversion.

Potential roles for anthocyanins in preventing various chronic diseases have been reported. These compounds are highly sensitive to external conditions and are susceptible to degradation, which increases the complexity of their metabolism in vivo. This review discusses anthocyanin metabolism in the digestive tract, phase I and II metabolism, and enterohepatic circulation (EHC), as well as their distribution of anthocyanins in blood, urine, and several organs. In the oral cavity, anthocyanins are partly hydrolyzed by microbiota into aglycones which are then conjugated by glucuronidase. In stoma

Total Anthocyanin Content of Strawberry and the Profile Changes by Extraction Methods and Sample Processing.

Anthocyanins are the primarily pigments in many flowers, vegetables, and fruits and play a critical role in human and plant health. They are polyphenolic pigments that are soluble in water and usually quantified by spectrophotometric methods. The two main methods that quantify anthocyanins are pH differential and organic solvent-based methods. Our hypothesis was that these methods extract different anthocyanin profiles. Therefore, this experiment was designed to identify anthocyanin profiles that are extracted by pH differential and organic solvent-based methods and observe their total anthocy

Neuroprotective effects of anthocyanin- and proanthocyanidin-rich extracts in cellular models of Parkinson׳s disease.

Neuropathological evidence indicates that dopaminergic cell death in Parkinson׳s disease (PD) involves impairment of mitochondrial complex I, oxidative stress, microglial activation, and the formation of Lewy bodies. Epidemiological findings suggest that the consumption of berries rich in anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins may reduce PD risk. In this study, we investigated whether extracts rich in anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, or other polyphenols suppress the neurotoxic effects of rotenone in a primary cell culture model of PD. Dopaminergic cell death elicited by rotenone was suppressed by

Anthocyanin-rich purple corn extract inhibit diabetes-associated glomerular angiogenesis.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the major diabetic complications and the leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Abnormal angiogenesis results in new vessels that are often immature and play a pathological role in DN, contributing to renal fibrosis and disrupting glomerular failure. Purple corn has been utilized as a daily food and exerts disease-preventive activities. This study was designed to investigate whether anthocyanin-rich purple corn extract (PCE) prevented glomerular angiogenesis under hyperglycemic conditions. Human endothelial cells were cultured in conditioned media of mesa

Ultrasound in Pigmented Rice Processing: A Versatile Approach for Anthocyanin Retention and Extraction: A Review.

Pigmented rice contains anthocyanins and other bioactive phenolic compounds; however, its processing is challenged by the relatively low starch digestibility of some pigmented varieties, prolonged drying times, anthocyanin degradation, and inefficient pigment recovery. This review evaluates ultrasound as a complementary technology for addressing these challenges, focusing on three major applications: starch modification, ultrasound-assisted drying, and anthocyanin extraction. Specifically, ultrasound-induced physical effects can disrupt starch-granule organization, alter molecular order, and t

Upregulation of PpHsfB2b at high temperature represses light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in pear.

In recent years, escalating global temperatures have adversely affected the yield and quality of horticultural crops. Red pears (Pyrus spp.), prized for their vibrant pigmentation, derive their characteristic coloration primarily from anthocyanin accumulation. Light and temperature are important environmental factors regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. Light induces the accumulation of anthocyanins in red pear; however, the specific molecular mechanism by which elevated temperatures inhibit anthocyanin biosynthesis in red pear remains unclear. The integration nodes of the light and temperatur

Natural variation in the PmbHLH162 promoter regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis and accumulation in Prunus mume.

Anthocyanin accumulation is a vital agronomic and ornamental trait, as it not only contributes to adaptation to environmental stress but also enhances ornamental value. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 328 accessions of mei (Prunus mume) to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with red pigmentation in petals, filaments, and xylem. Based on these significant SNPs, we defined 2 haplotypes (bHLH162hap1 and bHLH162hap2) and identified PmbHLH162, a bHLH transcription factor gene responsible for anthocyanin biosynthesis regulation.
