Direct Anthropometry of Repaired Bilateral Complete Cleft Lip: A Long-Term Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Repair of bilateral complete cleft lip requires more than following a design in a textbook. The operative strategy should incorporate knowledge of anticipated nasolabial changes with growth. METHODS: Direct nasolabial anthropometry was recorded in 174 children with bilateral complete cleft lip before and immediately after primary repair. Serial measurements were taken in 66 Caucasian patients between the ages of 6 months and 15 years and compared to Farkas' normal values. Data for upper philtral width were unavailable; therefore, this dimension was measured in 454 nonsyndromic Cau

New insights into facial anthropometry in digital photographs using iris dependent calibration.

BACKGROUND: In facial and reconstructive surgery objective assessment of anatomy is crucial to evaluate surgical results. Photographic computer-assisted anthropometry substitutes clinical measurements. The constancy of the horizontal iris diameter (IDh) allows iris dependent calibration of photographs, replacing the need for a scale. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study to assess the constancy of the IDh in children. Frontal and close-up digital photographs of the eyes were taken of 100 children aged 5-18 years. The IDh was measured twice; once with a scale positioned on the foreh

Relationship between quantitative ultrasound, anthropometry and sports participation in college aged adults.

The college years are an opportune timepoint of intervention in the primary prevention of osteoporosis. Physical activity is an important modifiable risk factor, yet national surveys reveal that young people are insufficiently active. To determine patterns of physical activity associated with improved skeletal status at this life stage, we assessed the relationship between self-reported physical activity patterns, grip strength, anthropometric measures, and calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measures in a study of college students (n=235), the Tufts Longitudinal Health Study (TLHS). Late-pregnancy air pollution exposure and neonatal anthropometry with and without gestational hypertension.

This study examined the relationships among gestational hypertension (GH), peridelivery inflammatory biomarkers, late-pregnancy air pollution exposure, and neonatal anthropometric outcomes. Pregnant women recruited during the second trimester were classified into the GH or normotensive group. Maternal characteristics, blood pressure, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and neonatal outcomes were assessed. Exposure to PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3) during the 30 days before delivery was estimated usi

Clinical Anthropometry in Male Infertility: Differences Between Men With and Without Klinefelter Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is one of the most common genetic causes of male infertility and is frequently associated with characteristic anthropometric features. However, few studies have directly compared body proportions between patients with KS and infertile men without KS in clinical settings in Japan. Therefore, the present study investigated physical characteristics, particularly arm span, in infertile men with or without KS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The present study included 30 infertile Japanese men with KS and 289 infertile men without KS who visited the outpatient clinic

A new anthropometry-based muscle quality index predicts adverse outcomes in hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Muscle quality index (MQI) is computed as the ratio of strength to muscle mass (MM), estimating functional muscle quality. Imaging methods are used to assess MM and compute the MQI, being challenging for use in clinical practice. Anthropometry has become an alternative marker of MM that can be used within MQI, although few studies have explored this approach. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic value of mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC cm), corrected arm muscle area (AMA cm2), and calf circumference adjusted for body mass index (CC-BMI adjusted cm) as markers of MM within MQI

A predictive model for body water and fluid balance using 3D smartphone anthropometry.

BACKGROUND: Body fluid volumes, including total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid (ECF), and intracellular fluid (ICF), are crucial indicators of body composition, and the distribution of these fluids is essential for assessing hydration status and fluid accumulation. Although fluid volumes are commonly measured with bioelectrical impedance devices, several challenges hinder the application of this technique. However, 3D smartphone scanning applications that automate body volumes and other anthropometric estimates may provide a viable alternative to body fluid assessments. METHODS: A tota

Torso kinematics during gait and trunk anthropometry in pregnant fallers and non-fallers.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women experience numerous physiological and biomechanical alterations which may be associated with their increased risk of experiencing a fall. Gait alterations in other populations who fall include increased step width and mediolateral trunk motion. It is not known if pregnant women who have fallen exhibit these alterations. RESEARCH QUESTION: Our purpose was to examine torso kinematics and step width during gait in pregnant fallers, pregnant non-fallers and non-pregnant controls. We also examined trunk anthropometry in the pregnant groups to determine if pregnant faller

New perspectives on the face in fetal alcohol syndrome: what anthropometry tells us.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) refers to the adverse effects to the fetus from prenatal exposure to alcohol. Originally, the diagnosis of FAS was given only to those individuals that were the most severely affected. Since that time, it has become apparent that the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure are broad-based, and those individuals diagnosed with FAS represent the severe end of the continuum in their phenotypic expression. This study utilized 21 craniofacial anthropometric measurements on 100 prenatally exposed individuals to quantify the elements of the FAS facial phenotype and to extend

Impact of health literacy and subjective happiness in pregnancy on neonatal anthropometry: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal health literacy (MHL) and happiness can significantly impact pregnancy outcomes (POs) and neonatal health. This study primarily aimed to assess the level of maternal health literacy. Additionally, we sought to determine how maternal health literacy, happiness, socio-demographics, and pregnancy outcomes influence neonatal anthropometrics, thereby providing a more comprehensive understanding of the determinants of maternal and neonatal health. METHODS: In a 2-year cohort study on 591 pregnant women with normal pregnancies, we recorded the maternal socio-demographic and obst

Prenatal exposure to particulates and anthropometry through 9 years of age in a birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Previous research observed links between prenatal air pollution and risk of childhood obesity but the timing of the exposure is understudied. AIM: We examined prenatal particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) exposure and child anthropometry. MATERIALS & METHODS: Children's body mass index z-scores (zBMI) at 0-3 (N = 4370) and 7-9 (n = 1191) years were derived from reported anthropometry at paediatric visits. We ran linear mixed models for six windows, adjusting for maternal, child, and neighbourhood factors. RESULTS: PM10 exposure across pregnancy and at multiple windows was associated

Comparing Fetal Ultrasound Biometric Measurements to Neonatal Anthropometry at the Extremes of Birth Weight.

OBJECTIVE: Error in birthweight prediction by sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) has clinical implications, such as avoidable cesarean or misclassification of fetal risk in labor. We aimed to evaluate optimal timing of ultrasound and which fetal measurements contribute to error in fetal ultrasound estimations of birth size at the extremes of birthweight. STUDY DESIGN: We compared differences in head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length, and EFW between ultrasound and corresponding birth measurements within 14 (n = 1,290) and 7 (n = 617) days of birth for small-

Association between anemia and grip strength indices combined with anthropometry in the Korean population.

Anemia is common in older people and is associated with low hand grip strength (HGS). However, there is no study of the association of anemia with both absolute and various relative HGS indices. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to examine the association of anemia with absolute and relative HGS indices and to evaluate whether the relative HGS indices are useful as risk indices of anemia. In this large-scale cross-sectional study, we analyzed the association of anemia with anthropometric indices, absolute HGS indices, and relative HGS indices using both crude and adjusted binary logi
