OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the results of the first 24 months of a postprescription review with feedback-based antimicrobial stewardship program in a European referral children's hospital.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a pre-post study comparing antimicrobial use between the control (2015-2016) and the intervention periods (2017-2018) expressed in days of therapy/100 days present. Quality of prescriptions was evaluated by quarterly cross-sectional point-prevalence surveys. Length of stay, readmission rates, in-hospital mortality rates, cost of systemic antimicrobial agents, and antimicrobial resist

This single-center retrospective study analyzed de-duplicated Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates collected at Huaian Municipal Infectious Diseases Hospital from 2023 to 2025. A total of 121 unique isolates were included, of which 83.5% were from sputum. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) was performed using an automated microbiology system, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results were interpreted according to CLSI M100, 33rd edition. In early 2024, a four-dimensional linkage-targeted antimicrobial stewardship intervention was implemented in the Respiratory and Tuberculosis Depa

OBJECTIVES: To map international evidence on non-medical prescribers' (NMPs) antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) knowledge, competencies, and prescribing behaviours, and to examine how these are assessed across professional groups and healthcare settings.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Six databases and grey literature were searched using a Population-Concept-Context strategy. Eligible studies addressed independent non-medical antimicrobial prescribing in high-income countries (2016-2026). Records were screened and data c

BACKGROUND: Prospective audit and feedback (PAF) is a core antimicrobial stewardship strategy. Discontinuing PAF in favor of alternative interventions has not been previously evaluated.
METHODS: This descriptive study assessed changes in antimicrobial days of therapy per 1,000 patient days (DOTs/1,000 PD) following PAF removal at two urban hospitals. Preintervention PAF included daily review of broad-spectrum antibiotics and oral therapy transitions. Postintervention efforts emphasized system standardization, education, guideline optimization, and electronic medical record enhancements. Secon

Ventilator-associated respiratory infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in mechanically ventilated ICU patients. Therefore, it is of interest to analyze endotracheal aspirates collected from adult ICU patients at Bangladesh Medical University between July 2024 to June 2025. Among 111 samples examined, 26.1% showed significant bacterial growth. Gram-negative bacilli predominated (96.6%) among the isolates. The most frequent pathogen was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (58.6%), followed by Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. High resistance was observed

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) reduce the inappropriate use of antimicrobial agents. Traditionally, paediatric osteoarticular infections have been treated with prolonged intravenous antibiotics; however, evidence suggests that shorter intravenous therapy followed by oral narrow-spectrum antibiotics is effective. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of an ASP on the treatment of acute haematogenous bone and joint infections (AH-BJI) in children. We performed a single-centre quasi-experimental study comparing antibiotic use in paediatric [0-18 years] inpatients with

The study objective is to examine epidemiological and microbiological aspects of aerobic vaginitis in female patients admitted to University Hospital of Campania "L. Vanvitelli" over five years. The most represented strains were E. coli (n = 153), Citrobacter spp. increasing from 2020, E. faecalis (n = 149), S. haemolitycus (n = 61), and Candida albicans (n = 87). The susceptibility patterns of a selection of gram-negative and gram-positive representative bacterial isolates were examined. Carbapenems, aminoglycosides, and fosfomycin were most effective against gram-negative bacteria, whereas v

BACKGROUND: Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are challenging populations for antimicrobial stewardship interventions due to a variety of reasons, including immunosuppression, consequent risk of opportunistic and donor-derived infections, high rates of infection with multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs), Clostridioides difficile, and need for prolonged antimicrobial prophylaxis. Despite this, data on stewardship interventions and metrics that address the distinct needs of these patients are limited.
METHODS: We performed a narrative review of the current state of antimicrobial steward

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Currently, there are limited data on ambulatory antimicrobial stewardship (AAMS) programmes in the primary care setting. The purpose of this study was to implement a pharmacist-led AAMS programme for uncomplicated cystitis (UC) and pyelonephritis in a hospital-based family medicine residency clinic.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was used to assess clinician prescribing habits and identify areas of inappropriate prescribing. Females between 18 and 64 years old diagnosed with UC or pyelonephritis were included in the analysis. The primary objective was a com

We aimed to detect the etiological agents of acute diarrhea by a molecular gastrointestinal pathogen test (MGPT) and to assess the impact of MGPT on antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP). This is a prospective observational study and was conducted between 1 January 2015 and 30 June 2017. We included consequent patients who had acute diarrhea. At the end of 2015, we implemented ASP in acute diarrhea cases and compared the outcomes in the pre-ASP and post-ASP periods. Antimicrobial resistance is an evolving threat to infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Antibiotic-resistant organisms may colonize infants, cause infections, or contribute to nosocomial outbreaks, and are associated with infant morbidity and mortality. As microorganisms continue to acquire resistance to available antimicrobials, infants become at risk of therapeutic failure. One key strategy to prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance is through antimicrobial stewardship to optimize antimicrobial use. This review starts with an overview of neonatal sepsis and driver

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition responsible for millions of deaths worldwide. Although mortality rates have declined, sepsis remains a major global health concern. Early recognition and prompt, appropriate treatment are essential for improving patient outcomes. However, implementing effective sepsis management protocols in Emergency Departments (EDs) is often hindered by staff shortages and high patient volumes. Strengthening sepsis care is also crucial for promoting responsible antibiotic use. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of an antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) pro

BACKGROUND: Many patients with hematological malignancy develop fever after chemotherapy/conditioning but before chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (preneutropenic fever [PNF]). The proportion of PNF with an infectious etiology is not well established.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center, prospective observational substudy of PNF (neutrophils >0.5 cells/μL, ≥38.0°C) in adults receiving acute myeloid leukemia (AML) chemotherapy, or allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (allo-HCT) conditioning enrolled in a neutropenic fever randomized controlled trial between 1 January and 31 October 2018.

Solid organ transplant and hematopoietic cell transplant patients face an increased risk of infectious diseases, greater exposure to antibiotics, and heightened risk of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) due to their immunosuppressed state. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) are essential in reducing the incidence of MDRO by conserving antimicrobial use, minimizing treatment durations, and improving the appropriate use of diagnostic testing. However, the role of ASP in transplant infectious diseases (TID) is still evolving, necessitating greater collaboration between ASP and transplan
