Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic autoimmune disease, where persistent presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) leads to thrombotic and obstetric complications. APS is a paradigmatic thromboinflammatory disease. Thromboinflammation is a pathophysiological mechanism coupling inflammation and thrombosis, which contributes to the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease. APS can serve as a model to unravel mechanisms of thromboinflammation and the relationship between innate immune cells and thrombosis. Monocytes are activated by aPL into a proinflammatory and procoagulant pheno

History A 50-year-old woman presented to the emergency department of our hospital with a 2-day history of lower limb pain associated with unusual asthenia and diffuse arthralgia over the past 3 weeks. She was a native of Guinea and had lived in France for most of her life, working as a personal care assistant. Her only medical history of note was an occurrence of fetal death at 12 weeks gestation when she was 35 years old. She had bilateral lower limb swelling, without changes in skin temperature or color. All proximal and distal arterial pulses were felt. General physical examination findings

This is a review of scientific publications on renal involvement in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), with focus on clinical and histopathological findings and treatment. A search for English-language articles on renal involvement in APS covering the period 1980-2017 was conducted in Medline/PubMed and Scopus databases using the MeSH terms "antiphospholipid syndrome", "antiphospholipid antibodies", "glomerulonephritis" and "thrombotic microangiopathy" (TMA). APS nephropathy is primarily the result of thromboses in renal arteries or veins, intraparenchymatous arteries and glomerular capillaries.

Antiphospholipid syndrome is a complex autoimmune disease, characterized by the presence of vascular thrombosis, obstetric, hematologic, cutaneous, and cardiac manifestations. Renal disease in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome was not recognized in the first descriptions of the disease, but later on, the renal manifestations of the syndrome have been investigated widely. Renal manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome conform a wide spectrum of diverse renal syndromes. Hypertension is one of the most frequent, but less commonly recognized renal alteration. It can be difficult to contro

BACKGROUND: Antiphospholipid syndrome is a multisystem auto-immune disorder characterized by arterial or venous thrombosis in children.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: 11-year-old child with pneumococcal meningitis also had cerebral sinus vein thrombosis and pulmonary artery segmental thrombosis.
OBSERVATION: Pro-thrombotic evaluation showed positive lupus anticoagulant at baseline and after 12 weeks. Investigations for lupus were negative at admission and after one year of follow-up.
MESSAGE: Antiphospholipid syndrome is a possibility even in thrombosis occurring in the setting of meningitis.

We report an original case of reversible antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) due to minocycline in a young male patient who experienced recurrent strokes while taking minocycline. He started minocycline therapy (50 mg twice daily) at 15 years old for acne. After three years of treatment, the patient experienced a lateral medullary syndrome. He was treated with aspirin while minocycline was continued. Eighteen months later, the patient complained about horizontal binocular diplopia. MRI revealed an infarct of the oculomotor nerve nucleus. Laboratory investigations revealed high titers of anti-beta

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune systemic disease characterized by vascular thrombosis (arterial or venous) and/or pregnancy complications associated with the occurrence of autoantibodies, specifically lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies, and/or anti-β2 glycoprotein-I antibodies confirmed at least twice over a 12 week period according to the 2006 Sydney criteria. Antiphospholipid antibodies are encountered in the general population with a reported prevalence of 1% to 5% However, APS is far more infrequent with a prevalence of 40-50/100,000 persons and an incidence

The antiphospholipid syndrome is a common autoimmune disease caused by pathogenic antiphospholipid antibodies, leading to recurrent thrombosis and/or obstetrical complications. Importantly for nephrologists, antiphospholipid antibodies are associated with various renal manifestations including large renal vessel thrombosis, renal artery stenosis, and a constellation of intrarenal lesions that has been termed antiphospholipid nephropathy. This last condition associates various degrees of acute thrombotic microangiopathy, proliferative and fibrotic lesions of the intrarenal vessels, and ischemic

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease defined by the presence of arterial or venous thrombotic events and/or pregnancy morbidity in patients who test positive for antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). APS can be isolated (known as primary APS) or associated with other autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; known as secondary APS). The kidney is a major target organ in APS and renal thrombosis can occur at any level within the vasculature of the kidney (renal arteries, intrarenal arteries, glomerular capillaries and renal veins); events reflect the site

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) may occur in isolation or in association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with the potential to cause renal failure via several distinct pathologies. Renal transplantation in the presence of APS carries a risk of early graft loss from arterial or venous thrombosis, or thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). Whilst perioperative anticoagulation reduces the risk of large vessel thrombosis, it may result in significant haemorrhage, and its efficacy in preventing post-transplant TMA is uncertain. Here, we report a patient with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) due t

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is defined as an autoimmune disorder characterized by recurrent thrombosis or obstetrical morbidity. These features are linked to the presence in blood of autoantibodies against negatively charged phospholipids or phospholipid-binding proteins. Obstetric morbidity includes recurrent abortion (early and late) and severe pre-eclampsia (P-EC)/hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets (HELLP) syndrome, and/or severe placental insufficiency. Criteria that define the major clinical and laboratory events were published in revised forms in the Sydney recommendati

Chronic periaortitis (CP) is a rare disease, the common denominator of which is a retroperitoneal periaortic fibroinflammatory tissue that frequently obstructs neighboring structures. CP has already been reported in association with various autoimmune disorders, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren's syndrome. The association with autoimmune disorders suggests that CP is a manifestation of a systemic autoimmune process. We describe the first case of antiphospholipid syndrome in a patient with CP.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations, treatment and prognosis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
METHODS: The cases of 72 patients with defined APS admitted from Jan 1990 to Jan 2006 were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: 21 patients with primary APS and 51 patients with secondary APS were studied. Vascular thrombosis was present in 43 (59.7%) of the 72 patients in this study. Cardiac abnormalities could be observed in 48 patients (66.6%). Lesions most frequently involved left-sided valves, mitral (35.4%) more commonly affected than aortic (16.7%). Cardiac involvement was

Atherosclerosis (AT) is a metabolic, systemic inflammatory/immune disease characterized by lipoproteins metabolism alteration that leads to immune/inflammatory system activation with the consequent proliferation of smooth-muscle cells, narrowing arteries and atheroma formation. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by thrombophilic state and circulating antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) including anti beta2-GPI. Experimental studies and human observations suggest that APS is associated with AT. In fact, innate and adaptive immune responses participate i

The occurrence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in several members of a family has spurred intense efforts to identify susceptibility genes predisposing to the disease. As a result, a number of candidate association genes in different ethnic groups have been identified, and some genes have been linked to specific lupus manifestations. Particularly where familial disease occurs in childhood, and especially when it occurs prior to puberty, complement deficiencies and other immunologic defects should be explored. Evidence of other forms of autoimmunity, including autoimmune thyroiditis and a

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by increased hypercoagulability and divergent symptoms including ocular manifestations. In APS patients arterial and/or venous thromboses and repeated fetal loss are diagnosed in presence of antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies. Antiphospholipid antibodies are heterogeneous group of immunoglobulins with different antigenic structure. Primary APS is defined in the absence of underlying disease, while secondary APS is seen within another pathological condition. In both primary and secondary APS ocular and neuroophthalmic manifestations, such as retin

Pulmonary manifestations in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) are relatively rare compared to other clinical signs of this disease. However, pulmonary microthrombosis is among the most frequent arterial complications of APS. Timely diagnosis of pulmonary manifestations is required due both to their severity and to the high mortality rate. The spectrum of pulmonary disorders in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies is sometimes referred to as the "antiphospholipid lung syndrome", and includes thromboembolism of lung arteries, pulmonary hypertension, adult respiratory distress syndrome, intra-
