Bites from Loxosceles spiders can cause few symptoms to gangrenous skin necrosis or even death. To date, the treatment of the violin spider bite is largely unsatisfactory. Although no specific therapy exists, it has been suggested that heparin, steroids, dapsone, experimental antivenin and/or surgical excision may be beneficial. Three rare cases of suspected spider bite and their surgical treatment are reported. On the basis of geographical area, anamnesis and clinical symptoms, we suppose Loxoceles rufescens responsible for these bites.

Acute life threatening systemic involvement (cardiovascular and central nervous system) occur due to scorpion poisoning, often reported from rural part of world comprises the majority of developing countries. The most serious symptoms are hypertension, impaired left ventricular systolic function, hypotension and pulmonary oedema. Scorpion antivenin neutralizes circulatory and tissue venin. It has no action on effective effectors (Receptors). Prazosin possesses pharmacological properties that render it most suitable in antagonizing the toxicological effects of scorpion venom.

Two severe cases of green pit viper bites were reported. The clinical manifestations were severe bleeding and diarrhea. The first patient had acute renal failure complicated from severe diarrhea and hypovolemia. Hematological findings showed hypofibrinogenemia and thrombocytopenia. Renal biopsy performed in the first case showed a picture compatible with that of the recovery phase of acute tubular necrosis. Green pit viper antivenine serum together with symptomatic and supportive treatment was given. Both patients recovered uneventfully.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to highlight the clinical features of spider bite envenomation, a subject which has not, to our knowledge, been previously published in Saudi Arabia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients (8 males and 2 females) aged between 13 and 75 years (mean 36.8) were hospitalized at King Fahad Hospital, Al Baha, with the diagnosis of spider bites during the 9-year period from June 1988 to May 1997.
RESULTS: One of the patients was bitten on the right hand by a brown spider, causing severe cellulitis and tissue necrosis, and requiring surgical debridement and pedi

Exotic snake envenomations are increasingly encountered in the United States (US) due to the growing ownership of non-native venomous reptiles. We report the case of a 49-year-old man bitten by his own Sri Lankan green pit viper (Craspedocephalus trigonocephalus, formerly Trimeresurus trigonocephalus). The patient presented to the emergency department (ED) with rapid-onset, severe local pain and swelling extending from the bite site on his finger into the wrist. He also reported dizziness and numbness. Laboratory results were within normal limits. Poison control was contacted, and a clinical t

INTRODUCTION: Numerous snakebites are reported every spring and summer in the United States especially in the Southwestern part of the country. This is usually associated with significant morbidity but fatalities are rare. Most victims are male and the majority of bites are on the extremities.
METHODS: A search for all cases coded with a discharge diagnosis of snakebite injury revealed 90 patients admitted to Northwest Texas Hospital, the trauma center in Amarillo, Texas, between January 2002 and December 2012. These charts were retrospectively reviewed and data extracted including patient de

Snake bite envenomation is not uncommon in Taiwan. This study focuses on the pattern of poisonous snake bites and their management in southern Taiwan over a 5-year period. The case histories of 37 patients with poisonous snake bites admitted to the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital between June 2001 and July 2005 were analyzed retrospectively. Three patients, bitten by unknown species of venomous snakes, were excluded from this study. The frequency of snakebites from each species of snake, the local and systemic manifestations of snake bite, treatment of complications and final outcomes we

Rattlesnake envenomations are common in some areas of the United States. Although fatal rattlesnake envenomations are rare and usually preventable, morbidity may be significant. Patients may present with localized edema, hypotension, coagulopathy, or thrombocytopenia. Patients with progressive swelling or severe coagulopathy are typically treated with Crotalidae polyvalent antivenin. We present a series of 4 patients with unusual complications of rattlesnake envenomation to illustrate the wide spectrum of disease that may be encountered. These case presentations include anaphylaxis to rattlesn

We present the case of a patient who developed myalgia as the primary symptom of envenomation by the eastern coral snake, Micrurus fulvius. The patient was evaluated and treated in the emergency department. Physical examination did not demonstrate any neuromuscular abnormalities. On consultation with the poison control center, the patient's myalgia was determined to be an effect of envenomation, and 5 vials of North American coral snake antivenin were administered. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit where his symptoms resolved. He was discharged the following day after remaini

Latrodectus mactans has now invaded towns and cities. The spider's venom is a neurotoxin that causes little local reaction but produces pain and spasm in large skeletal muscle groups within 30 minutes to three hours after the bite. Severe envenomation may result in respiratory failure and coma. First aid is of no value. Muscle relaxants are useful in treatment, as is calcium gluconate. Antivenin is indicated for high-risk victims, such as those with hypertension and persons younger than 16 or older than 60 years of age.

A patient bitten by Bungarus candidus (Malayan krait) developed nausea, vomiting, weakness, and myalgia 30 minutes after being bitten. One hour later, ptosis and occulomotor palsies as well as tightness of his chest were noted. Respiratory failure requiring mechanical respiration appeared 8 hours after the bite and lasted for nearly 96 hours. The two bite sites were virtually painless and resulted in slight transient erythema and edema. No specific antivenin was available, and treatment consisted of respiratory support and management of aspiration pneumonitis. Recovery was complete.

Patients who have been or may have been bitten by a snake should receive prompt and careful clinical and laboratory evaluation. Fang marks, pain and swelling are characteristic of pit viper envenomation. Although no therapy is universally accepted, a number of treatment plans appear to be effective. If envenomation has occurred, intravenous administration of antivenin and/or surgical excision or incision should be carried out without delay. Prompt transferral to a medical facility is the most appropriate first-aid measure. If transportation is unduly delayed, immediate linear incision and suct

Snakebite is not necessarily snake envenomation. Of about 2,500 known species of snakes, only about 40 are regarded as being dangerous. A snake will not go out of its way to attack a person and even in defense, snakes bite humans usually to dissuade and not to kill.Early surgical excision of the bitten area is regarded as a most important aspect in the management of a poisonous snakebite, and because of the side effects of horse serum, cautious use of antivenin is advised only in cases of severe systemic poisoning. When a snake spits into the eyes, prompt treatment is indicated to prevent futur

Snake envenomation is a relatively neglected significant world health problem, designated an orphan disease by the WHO. While often effective, antivenins are insufficient. Could another approach greatly aid inhibition of the venom toxins? New fluorescent substrates for measuring protease activity in microplate assays suitable for high throughput screening were tested and found reproducible with snake venom. Representative North American venoms showed relatively strong proteinase and collagenase, but weaker elastase activities. Caseinolytic activity is inhibited by the nonspecific proteinase in

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Acute hypersensitivity reactions are well known to occur with the administration of the Antivenin (Crotalidae) Polyvalent (Wyeth Laboratories, Marietta, PA). Crotalidae polyvalent immune Fab (ovine) (CroFab; FabAV, Protherics, Inc., Brentwood, TN) was introduced in 2001, and early studies reported a hypersensitivity reaction rate up to 19%. We describe the incidence of acute hypersensitivity reactions to FabAV in patients bitten by rattlesnakes.
METHODS: This was a nonconcurrent observational cohort study, with data obtained by chart review of all patients admitted to our ser

Capillary leak syndrome is a unique complication characterized by extravasation of liquids in the interstitial space due to protein loss caused by snakebite envenoming. We describe the case of a 12-year-old boy from the district of Napo in the city of Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon, who had edema and increased face volume due to the bite of a snake of the Bothrops genus in the lateral aspect of the right leg; he was the hospitalized and diagnosed with severe ophidism complicated with face edema. The patient received eight vials of antivenin, antibiotics and analgesics. Finally, the patient was

Latrodectism, the clinical syndrome that follows envenomation by the black widow spider, may easily be confused with more common conditions. Acute manifestations are characterized by agonizing pain and muscle spasm. Prolonged symptoms, primarily related to neurologic dysfunction, may occur. Familiarity with the manifestations of latrodectism is the key to diagnosis. Family physicians should consider latrodectism in patients presenting with severe pain and muscle cramps, particularly if the setting and history are consistent with a possible spider bite. Optimal therapy remains controversial. Ea

Bites by venomous reptiles are statistically of minor importance in North America, especially as regards medically significant envenomations. However, they may assume a greater relative incidence in warmer regions and always manage to generate public and professional interest wherever they occur. Unproved and potentially hazardous first-aid and institutional therapies must be subjected to scrutiny in the future. Current research in the area of more specific and less reactive antivenin products is encouraging, and it appears that a consensus approach to the care of the bitten patient is emergin

BACKGROUND: Despite conflicting evidence, specific serotherapy is recommended for scorpion envenomation.
METHODS: A meta-analysis of prospective or observational controlled studies, comparing intravenous scorpion antivenin (SAV) with control, was performed. Binary outcomes are reported as risk difference for clinical improvement and mortality rates. Analysis was performed both for the whole number of included studies and for two subgroups (set up according to the geographic origin of scorpions).
RESULTS: Nine studies (four randomised controlled trials (RCTs), five observational) enrolling 68

We gathered data on 39 victims of Eastern coral snake bite over a 12-year period. The most common situation resulting in snakebite was erroneous identification of the snake as the nonpoisonous scarlet king snake. While no patient died, several experienced severe envenomation, including bulbospinal respiratory paralysis. We found that neurologic symptoms may be delayed for 12 hours, and then may be precipitous. Envenomation occurs in 75% of the persons bitten by a coral snake. Antivenin is effective and should be intravenously administered early to patients who have been bitten by a positively
