Overcoming chemical barriers: a new species of Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Dendrobates tinctorius (Anura: Dendrobatidae) in the Brazilian Amazon.

The nematode genus Rhabdias comprises over 100 species of parasitic nematodes that infect amphibians and reptiles, with a wide geographical distribution. To date, 25 species have been reported from the Neotropical region. Despite this diversity, few integrative studies, combining morphological and molecular data have been conducted to characterize species within the genus. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to describe, through an integrative approach, a new species of Rhabdias found parasitizing the lungs of an anuran with a high concentration of skin toxins, Dendrobates ti

Gonadal morphogenesis in the South American toad Rhinella Arenarum (Anura, Bufonidae) unveils an extremely delayed rate of sex differentiation.

Among anurans, Bufonids are recognized for their retarded sex differentiation. However, few studies have addressed gonadal morphogenesis in this family. Here, we analyzed the early gonadogenesis in laboratory-reared Rhinella arenarum. Few germ cells were identified in the genital ridge at Gosner stage 26. At metamorphosis, somatic cells and germ cells were observed in the outer region of the undifferentiated gonad, whereas the central region was occupied by stromal tissue. A cortico-medullary organization was first recognized on Day 7 postmetamorphosis. The cortex was composed of germ cells an

A survey of the external morphology, internal oral morphology, chondrocranium and hyobranchial apparatus of Elachistocleis larvae Parker, 1927 (Anura, Microhylidae).

The external morphology, internal oral morphology, the chondrocranium and the hyobranchial apparatus of Elachistocleis bumbameuboi, E. cf. piauiensis, E. cesarii and E. bicolor are described and compared with each other and with other species of microhylids using available descriptions from the literature. The general morphology of Elachistocleis species is conservative in many aspects. Differences between species are subtle and are found in the body shape, the edge of the snout, fin height, if the lateral line is evident, the presence of regular pustules in the buccal roof arena, the posterol

Endoparasites in Limnonectes magnus (Anura, Dicroglossidae) from Samar Island, Philippines with description of a new species of Aplectana (Nematoda, Cosmocercidae).

Aplectana samarensis sp. nov. (Ascaridida, Cosmocercidae) from the intestines of Limnonectes magnus (Anura, Dicroglossidae) is described and illustrated. Aplectana samarensis sp. nov. represents the 53rd species assigned to the genus and the 6th species reported from the Oriental region. It is easily separated from the 5 species previously reported from the region by the presence of a gubernaculum and the distribution pattern of male caudal papillae: A. macintoshii has an irregular pattern, no precloacal papillae in rows; both A. akhrami and A. dubrajpuri lack a gubernaculum; A. duttaphryni ha

Cryptic diversity in the Hypsiboas semilineatus species group (Amphibia, Anura) with the description of a new species from the eastern Guiana Shield.

We used molecular and morphological data to investigate the hidden diversity within the Hypsiboas semilineatus species group, and more specifically within H. geographicus, an allegedly widespread species in northern South America. As a result, the identity of H. geographicus was clarified, several candidate species were detected and one of them, from the eastern Guiana Shield, is described herein as a preliminary step to resolve the taxonomy of the group. Hypsiboas diabolicus sp. nov. is mainly distinguished from closely-related species by an acuminate snout in lateral view, well-developed web

First genetic characterisation and phylogenetic position of Aplectana hylambatis (Nematoda: Cosmocercidae), infecting Pithecopus azureus (Anura: Hylidae) in the Brazilian Pantanal.

Aplectana hylambatis (Baylis, 1927) is a widespread nematode in South America that infects different species of anurans from different families. Although the morphology of this species shows intraspecific variations and is well studied, A. hylambatis does not have genetic characterisation. Therefore, the present study aimed to provide the first genetic characterisation of this parasite, based on 18S and 28S rDNA sequences, as well as to evaluate its phylogenetic position in the family Cosmocercidae. The present specimens showed no major morphological variations and were assigned to A. hylambat

Sicuophora (Syn. Wichtermania) multigranularis from Quasipaa spinosa (Anura): morphological and molecular study, with emphasis on validity of Sicuophora (Armophorea, Clevelandellida).

Morphological studies of Sicuophora (Syn. Wichtermania) multigranularis Xiao et al., 2002, from the rectum of the frog, Quasipaa spinosa, performed using silver impregnation and scanning electron microscopy, confirmed the following newly recognized features: (1) only one apical suture on the right surface; (2) two naked regions at the posterior end of both the left and the right side of the body. Phylogenetic analysis based on the SSU-rRNA gene showed that S. multigranularis is a sister to a clade comprising all other Clevelandellida, strongly supporting the validity of the genus Sicuophora. Embryogenesis and tadpole description of Hyperolius castaneus Ahl, 1931 and H. jackie Dehling, 2012 (Anura, Hyperoliidae) from montane bog pools.

Tadpoles of Hyperolius castaneus and Hyperolius jackie were found in the Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda and adjacent areas. Tadpoles of both species were identified by DNA-barcoding. At the shore of a bog pool three clutches of Hyperolius castaneus of apparently different age, all laid on moss pads (Polytrichum commune, Isotachis aubertii) or grass tussocks (Andropogon shirensis) 2-5 cm above the water level, were found. One clutch of Hyperolius castaneus was infested by larval dipterid flies. The most recently laid clutch contained about 20 eggs within a broad egg-jelly envelope. The eggs we

A secret from a hidden world: A new glassfrog of the genus Nymphargus (Anura: Centrolenidae) from Cordillera del Cóndor, Ecuador.

The genus Nymphargus is the most speciose of the family Centrolenidae with 44 species. In this study, we describe a new species of Nymphargus and present an updated phylogeny. The new species is sister to an undescribed species, also from SW Ecuador, and both belong to a clade that includes N. buenaventura, N. cariticommatus, N. griffithsi, N. lasgralarias, N. sucre, and N. wileyi. The new species likely originated during the Pliocene (~4.5 Mya) and is characterized by a uniformly green dorsum lacking spots, shagreened dorsal skin, and white peritonea covering the esophagus and stomach. New evidence for an old acquaintance: Neoprocoela edentata from the Oligocene of central Patagonia is the oldest species of Nannophryne (Anura: Bufonidae).

Neoprocoela edentata is a fossil anuran collected in Scarritt Pocket, Patagonia, Argentina. This locality provided the first described pre-Neogene batrachofauna of South America, which is also one of the few known to include representatives of extant taxa. Neoprocoela edentata shows an unusual combination of characters, and it has alternatively been related to Bufonidae or to a polyphyletic assemblage including Calyptocephalellidae and Telmatobiidae. In this article, we redescribe the single specimen of N. edentata, complementing the examination with micro-CT scan reconstructions, and expandin

PARAPLEUROGENOIDES (DIGENEA), A NEW GENUS IN PELOPHYLAX BEDRIAGAE (ANURA: RANIDAE) FROM KURDISTAN, IRAN WITH COMMENTS ON THE RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN PLEUROGENIDAE.

The systematics of the family Pleurogenidae Looss, 1899, has been significantly revised in recent years, with the addition of 7 new genera based on molecular data. Despite these advancements, this family still lacks a definitive morphological synapomorphy. It encompasses genera with considerable morphological diversity, parasitizing a wide range of host groups across the globe. In the present study, we describe Parapleurogenoides n. gen., a new genus within the Pleurogenidae, discovered in the Levant water frog, Pelophylax bedriagae (Camerano, 1882), from the Sanandaj region of western Iran. Description and molecular characterisation of a new nematode species parasitic in the lungs of Strongylopus grayii (Smith) (Anura: Pyxicephalidae) in South Africa.

Rhabdias delangei n. sp. (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) is described from the lungs of the clicking stream frog Strongylopus grayii (Smith) in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The new species is characterised by the nerve-ring being located just posterior to the mid-length of the oesophagus, a pre-equatorial vulva, as well as a thin-walled and apparently underdeveloped rectum. Pairwise analyses based on ITS-28S and partial cox1 gene fragments showed significant differences between R. delangei n. sp. and its congeners from the Afrotropical Realm. Rhabdias delangei n. sp. is the 12th species

Extra-intestinal localization of Goussia sp. (Apicomplexa) oocysts in Rana dalmatina (Anura: Ranidae), and the fate of infection after metamorphosis.

Although coccidia of the genus Goussia are common parasites of fish, only 2 species have been described in amphibians: G. hyperolisi from common reed frogs Hyperolius viridiflavus from Kenya and G. neglecta from unspecified European water frogs of the genus Rana from Germany. The genus Goussia is characterized by an oocyst, with a fine oocyst wall, containing 4 dizoic sporocysts that are composed of 2 valves joined by a longitudinal suture and lacking a Stieda body (typical for the genus Eimeria). To date, infections in amphibians were generally considered to be specific to the intestine of aq

Mitochondrial genome of Scutiger boulengeri (Anura, Megophryidae) reveals an exceptionally expanded non-coding region and its phylogenetic position within Megophryidae.

Scutiger boulengeri is an amphibian distributed in high-altitude mountainous environments on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surrounding regions. However, its mitochondrial genomic characteristics and phylogenetic position remain to be further investigated. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of S. boulengeri was sequenced and assembled and a preliminary analysis conducted. The results revealed that the mitochondrial genome of S. boulengeri is 49,991 bp in length and comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and an expanded non-coding region encompa

A remarkable new blue Ranitomeya species (Anura: Dendrobatidae) with copper metallic legs from open forests of Juruá River Basin, Amazonia.

Poison dart frogs (Dendrobatidae) are known for their aposematic coloration and toxic skin, making them a frequent subject of interest and research. However, descriptions of new species of Ranitomeya were interrupted for more than a decade. The implementation of a RAPELD (Rapid Assessment surveys of Long-Term Ecological Research) module in the Juruá River basin, a highly biodiverse and underexplored region, led to the record of a Ranitomeya species with blue dorsal stripes and coppery limbs. Herein we use morphological, morphometric, advertisement call, natural history, tadpole data and geneti

Detection of Rickettsia sp. strain Itinguçú in Ornithodoros faccinii (Acari: Argasidae) parasitizing the toad Rhinella ornata (Anura: Bufonidae) in Brazil.

The pivotal role of amphibians in food webs and their value as indicators of disequilibrium in ecosystem health have long been recognized by wildlife biologists. However, massive pathogen-induced declines in global amphibian populations reported during the last 30 years served to alert the scientific community that knowledge of amphibian disease ecology, including parasitic and vector-borne conditions, was and remains incipient. Herein, we report the detection of a Rickettsia bacterium infecting larvae of the argasid tick Ornithodoros faccinii, collected from the toad Rhinella ornata, in South

Biomarkers at different levels of organisation after atrazine formulation (SIPTRAN 500SC®) exposure in Rhinella schineideri (Anura: Bufonidae) Neotropical tadpoles.

Brazil is an important consumer of herbicides. In sugarcane cultivation-the country's most extensive agricultural crop-atrazine-based formulations are the principal form of weed control. Several studies have investigated adverse effects of atrazine or their formulations on anurans, but not specifically on Brazilian species. Our aim was therefore to investigate the lethal and sublethal effects of an atrazine-based herbicide in Rhinella schneideri tadpoles and, in particular, effects on the pigmentation system as a new endpoint in ecotoxicological studies. Rhinella schneideri tadpoles at the Gos

Revisiting the Poison Dart Frog Ameerega ingeri (Anura: Dendrobatidae): external morphology, tadpoles, natural history, distribution, advertisement call, phylogenetic position and conservation.

INTRODUCTION: T cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain (Tim) 3 and programmed death 1 (PD-1) are co-inhibitory receptors involved in the so-called T cell exhaustion, and in vivo blockade of these molecules restores T cell dysfunction. High expression of Tim-3 and PD-1 is induced after chronic antigen-specific stimulation of T cells during HIV infection. We have previously demonstrated that the interaction of Tim-3 with its ligand galectin-9 induces macrophage activation and killing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Our aim in this study was to analyze the Tim-3 expression profile before and after s

Native species Maxvachonia chabaudi Mawson, 1972 (Nematoda: Cosmocercoidea) found in the invasive marine toad Rhinella marina (Linnaeus) (Anura: Bufonidae) in Australia.

The genus Maxvachonia Chabaud et Brygoo, 1960 (Ascaridomorpha: Cosmocercidae) is a poorly known group of parasitic nematodes. Species of Maxvachonia are native to Madagascar-Australo-Papuan Region, where they are known to parasitise frogs, snakes and skinks. Unfortunately, most of Maxvachonia species have been inadequately described. In the present study, we report the native species Maxvachonia chabaudi Mawson, 1972 from the intestine of the invasive marine toad Rhinella marina (Linnaeus) in Australia for the first time. First description of buccopharyngeal anatomy in Pelodryadinae larvae: Morphological comparison and systematic implications (Anura: Hylidae: Pelodryadinae: Litoria rubella and Ranoidea caerulea).

Pelodryadinae, the Australian tree frogs, is a monophyletic group endemic to the Australo-Papuan region. Although we have a relatively good knowledge about tadpoles' phenotypic diversity in terms of external morphology, information about internal anatomy is rare for the subfamily; for instance, their buccopharyngeal cavity is completely unknown. Herein I describe for the first time the buccopharyngeal anatomy of two pelodryadins: Litoria rubella and Ranoidea caerulea. I compare my results with available evidence from Phyllomedusidae, that is, the sister clade to Pelodryadinae, and briefly comm
