Severe progressive scoliosis due to huge subcutaneous cavernous hemangioma: A case report.

Cavernous hemangioma consists mainly of congenital vascular malformations present before birth and gradually increasing in size with skeletal growth. A small number of patients with cavernous hemangioma develop scoliosis, and surgical treatment for the scoliosis in such cases has not been reported to date. Here we report a 12-year-old male patient with severe progressive scoliosis due to a huge subcutaneous cavernous hemangioma, who underwent posterior correction and fusion surgery. Upon referral to our department, radiographs revealed a scoliosis of 85° at T6-L1 and a kyphosis of 58° at T4-T1

Identifying the Active Ingredients of a Computerized Speech and Language Therapy Intervention for Poststroke Aphasia: Multiple Methods Investigation Alongside a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia is a communication disorder affecting more than one-third of stroke survivors. Computerized Speech and Language Therapy (CSLT) is a complex intervention requiring computer software, speech and language therapists, volunteers, or therapy assistants, as well as self-managed practice from the person with aphasia. CSLT was found to improve word finding, a common symptom of aphasia, in a multicenter randomized controlled trial (Clinical and Cost Effectiveness of Computer Treatment for Aphasia Post Stroke [Big CACTUS]). OBJECTIVE: This study provides a detailed description of th

BDNF genotype and tDCS interaction in aphasia treatment.

BACKGROUND: Several studies, including a randomized controlled trial by our group, support applying anodal tDCS (A-tDCS) to the left hemisphere during behavioral aphasia treatment to improve outcomes. A clear mechanism explaining A-tDCS's efficacy has not been established, but modulation of neuroplasticity may be involved. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene influences neuroplasticity and may modulate the effects of tDCS. Utilizing data from our recently completed trial, we conducted a planned test of whether aphasia treatment outcome is influenced by inter

Speech-language therapists' process of including significant others in aphasia rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Although aphasia rehabilitation should include significant others, it is currently unknown how this recommendation is adopted in speech-language therapy practice. Speech-language therapists' (SLTs) experience of including significant others in aphasia rehabilitation is also understudied, yet a better understanding of clinical reality would be necessary to facilitate implementation of best evidence pertaining to family interventions. AIMS: To explore the process through which SLTs work with significant others of people with aphasia in rehabilitation settings. METHODS & PROCEDURES:

"Curious but Overwhelmed": Care Partner Perspectives on Education, Resources, and Coping After Aphasia Diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Care partners of people with aphasia (PWA) are faced with unique challenges, as their loved one's loss of communication may create specific barriers to expression, mutual understanding, and interaction. Previous research has investigated the challenges faced by care partners of PWA. However, there is limited research that investigates the perceived aphasia education needs of these care partners. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the perspectives of care partners on education, challenges, benefits, and supports they experience when caring for a loved one with aphasia.

Primary Progressive Aphasias: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Background and Objective: Primary Progressive Aphasias (PPAs) are rare neurodegenerative disorders classified within frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and typically manifest between 45 and 70 years of age. In Mexico-and many other countries-reliable epidemiological data are lacking; however, estimates suggest that PPA accounts for 0.5-2.5% of neurodegenerative disease cases in Memory Clinics, with an incidence of approximately 1 per 100,000 and an average survival of 8 years. This review aims to provide clinicians with an overview of PPA's epidemiology, clinical features, and classifica

Effects of a new speech support application on intensive speech therapy and changes in functional brain connectivity in patients with post-stroke aphasia.

Aphasia is a language disorder that occurs after a stroke and impairs listening, speaking, reading, writing, and calculation skills. Patients with post-stroke aphasia in Japan are increasing due to population aging and the advancement of medical treatment. Opportunities for adequate speech therapy in chronic stroke are limited due to time constraints. Recent studies have reported that intensive speech therapy for a short period of time or continuous speech therapy using high-tech equipment, including speech applications (apps, can improve aphasia even in the chronic stage. However, its underly

Evaluation of rTMS in patients with poststroke aphasia: a systematic review and focused meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Aphasia-acquired loss of the ability to understand or express language-is a common and debilitating neurological consequence of stroke. Evidence suggests that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can significantly improve language outcomes in patients with aphasia. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been reported to improve naming in chronic stroke patients with nonfluent aphasia since 2005. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses of TMS treatment studies in patients with aphasia. Eight electronic databases (PubMed, Medline, Embase, Scopus,

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Combined With Multimodality Aphasia Therapy for Chronic Poststroke Aphasia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intensive speech therapy may improve recovery from poststroke aphasia. Further evidence suggests that pairing repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with intensive speech therapy might augment outcomes. This sham-controlled randomized clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of 1-Hz rTMS over the right pars triangularis combined with multimodality aphasia therapy (M-MAT) in chronic poststroke aphasia. METHODS: A parallel-group, double-blind, sham-controlled randomized clinical trial was conducted between April 2021 and May 2023 at an outpatient neurorehabi
