Samples of oesophagus, diaphragm and heart muscles were taken from one European bison from Białowieza Forest during seasonal European bison elimination in 2008. Five gram of each muscle was examined by staining small samples in 0.2% aqueous solution of methylene blue. After that they were placed between compressor glasses and examined under a dissecting microscope in order to detect Sarcocystis sp. infection. All sarcocysts observed were counted. The 5-g sample of the heart muscle yielded a total of 756 sarcocysts while that of the diaphragm contained 107 of them and that of the oesophagus--89

Black-headed full (L. ridibundus L.) represents a new host of C. baileyi Current, Upton and Haynes, 1986. In 1991-1992 during the months of May-July six localities in three regions of the Czech Republic were studied by examining in total 264 not flying gull chicks (4-30 days of age), applying the methods after Pavlásek (1987a, b, 1991). Cryptosporidia were found in gulls in all localities and spontaneous infection during the period under study occurred in 27.5-100% of birds (Tab. II, Fig. 1). The size of oocysts was 6.2-6.4 by 4.8-5.8 microns with means of 6.4 by 4.9 microns. The oocyst index

Black skimmers (Rynchops niger niger) are New World coastal seabirds that breed along the Gulf of Mexico, southern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States. Black skimmer populations are declining in North America, and little is known about health and diseases of this species. An outbreak of mortality causing the death of approximately 160 juvenile black skimmers occurred in the West Galveston and East Matagorda Bay populations during the 2022 and 2023 breeding seasons. Necropsy, histopathology, and molecular genetic methods were utilized to investigate the cause of morbidity in six ch

Agamococcidians are enigmatic and poorly studied parasites of marine invertebrates with unexplored diversity and unclear relationships to other sporozoans such as the human pathogens Plasmodium and Toxoplasma. It is believed that agamococcidians are not capable of sexual reproduction, which is essential for life cycle completion in all well studied parasitic apicomplexans. Here, we describe three new species of agamococcidians belonging to the genus Rhytidocystis. We examined their cell morphology and ultrastructure, resolved their phylogenetic position by using near-complete rRNA operon seque

The species name Cryptosporidium bollandi n. sp. is proposed for Cryptosporidium piscine genotype 2 based on morphological, biological and molecular characterisation. Phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA (18S) sequences revealed that C. bollandi n. sp. was most closely related to piscine genotype 4 (5.1% genetic distance) and exhibited genetic distances of 10.0%, 12.2% and 25.2% from Cryptosporidium molnari, Cryptosporidium huwi and Cryptosporidium scophthtalmi, respectively. At the actin locus, C. bollandi n. sp. was again most closely related to piscine genotype 4 (6.8% genetic distance) and ex

The morphologic, ultrastructural and genotypic characteristics of Babesia duncani n.sp. are described based on the characterization of two isolates (WA1, CA5) obtained from infected human patients in Washington and California. The intraerythrocytic stages of the parasite are morphologically indistinguishable from Babesia microti, which is the most commonly identified cause of human babesiosis in the USA. Intraerythrocytic trophozoites of B. duncani n.sp. are round to oval, with some piriform, ring and ameboid forms. Division occurs by intraerythrocytic schizogony, which results in the formatio

Haemogregarines were recorded in caimans Caiman crocodilus yacare from Pantanal. This study was carried out in seasonal ponds at the Miranda- Abobral subregion of Pantanal, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, western Brazil, from 1998 to 1999. Smears from 28 caimans were examined and 20 (71.4%) presented infection by a haemogregarine. Infections were observed in 11 males and 9 females. Morphological and morphometric observations suggest that the parasite forms found in this work are Hepatozoon caimani.

Laboratory-reared larval Gulf Coast ticks (GCTs) (Amblyomma maculatum) were exposed experimentally and found to acquire Hepatozoon americanum infection while feeding on parasitemic dogs. These ticks supported gamogonic and sporogonic development of the apicomplexan, and oocysts from newly molted nymphs were infectious for a dog. Other nymphs from this cohort that were allowed to feed on a blood-parasite naive sheep molted normally; the resulting adult ticks contained oocysts that were infectious for another dog. Merogonic development of H. americanum in the dogs and the resulting lesions/disea

BACKGROUND: Avian haemosporidians are single-celled eukaryotic parasites of vertebrates that require dipteran vectors for transmission. The genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon currently comprise over 5000 parasite lineages based on a 478-bp section of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, which is the standard DNA barcode for avian haemosporidians. The mitochondrial genomes of apicomplexan parasites are highly condensed, with a length of approximately 6000 bp, containing three coding genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, cytochrome c oxidase subunit III and cytochrome b) and disp

Acetyl-CoA participates in post-translational modification of proteins and in central carbon and lipid metabolism in several cell compartments. In mammals, acetyl-CoA transporter 1 (AT1, also known as SLC33A1) facilitates the flux of cytosolic acetyl-CoA into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), enabling the acetylation of proteins of the secretory pathway, in concert with the activity of dedicated acetyltransferases such as NAT8. However, the involvement of the ER acetyl-CoA pool in acetylation of ER-transiting proteins in Apicomplexa is unknown. Here, we identified homologs of AT1 and NAT8 in Tox

Sarcocystis sarcocysts are common in muscles of herbivores but are rare in muscles of carnivores. Here, we report sarcocysts in the muscles of a gray wolf (Canis lupus) from Alaska, USA, for the first time. Sarcocysts extracted from the tongue of the wolf were up to 900 μm long and slender and appeared to have a relatively thin wall by light microscope. By transmission electron microscopy, the sarcocyst wall most closely resembled "type 9c," and had a wavy parasitophorous vacuolar membrane folded as pleomorphic villar protrusions (vp), with anastomoses of tips. The vp and the ground substance

This is the first report of cryptosporidiosis in a bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) in China. Two Cryptosporidium isolates derived from the same bactrian camel (3-year-old) in November 2005 and April 2006 were characterized using sequence and phylogenetic analysis of the small-subunit rRNA (18S rRNA), 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70), actin and Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein (COWP) genes. The sequences of the 18S rRNA and COWP were identical to all other Cryptosporidium andersoni isolates although minor differences were noticed between the isolates and the USA isolate at the actin loc

In this work, oocysts of Cryptosporidium baileyi were isolated and identified in broiler chickens from three different Municipalities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, where they were isolated and identified by using the centrifuge- flotation technique associated to bright-field. Staining techniques, such as: modified Ziehl-Neelsen and safranin-methylene blue, were carried out to confirm natural infection. Oocysts of C. baileyi from broiler chickens were able to infect Coccidia-free Japanese quails, by observation of endogenous stages at histological sections, and the elimination of oocysts in t

In this study, by combining morphological and molecular data (18S rRNA gene), we identified four species of Hepatozoon in snakes from the Brazilian Amazonia region. We describe a new species of Hepatozoon infecting Bothrops atrox, provide the first molecular data for Hepatozoon luhei from Corallus hortulana, and record Hepatozoon cuestensis in Zonateres lanei and Hepatozoon odwyerae in Chironius carinatus. Furthermore, through a literature survey, we present an overview of studies on the genus Hepatozoon in snakes in Brazil, spanning over 120 years of research, highlighting species richness an

Wild birds are common hosts to numerous intracellular parasites such as single-celled eukaryotes of the family Eimeriidae (order Eucoccidiorida, phylum Apicomplexa). We investigated the infection rates, phylogeny, and pathogenicity of Isospora and Lankesterella parasites in wild and captive passerine birds. Blood and tissue samples of 815 wild and 15 deceased captive birds from Europe were tested using polymerase chain reaction and partial sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b and cytochrome c oxidase I and the nuclear 18S rRNA gene. The infection rate for Lankesterella in wild birds wa

INTRODUCTION: Otocephaly is a rare malformation characterized by agnathia (absence of the mandible), melotia (medially displaced ear pinna), aglossia (absence of the tongue) and microstomia (small oral aperture). This results due to failure of migration of the neural crest cells and is a defect of the first branchial arch. It is incompatible with life and early prenatal diagnosis is useful.
CASE REPORT: Our patient a primigravida with 19 weeks 6 days gestation was referred for micrognathia and polyhydramnios. On ultrasound examination, she had unilateral mild ventriculomegaly and posterior fo

The summer tanager, Piranga rubra (L., 1758) is a medium-sized songbird formerly belonging to the tanager family Thraupidae but now has been placed within the family Cardinalidae. Nothing is known about the coccidian parasites of this stunningly colorful bird. Feces from 2 P. rubra found dead in McCurtain County, Oklahoma were collected and examined for coccidia; 1 was found to be passing a new species of Isospora. Oocysts of Isospora mccurtainensis n. sp. are subspheroidal to ovoidal with a smooth bilayered wall, measure (length × width [L × W]) 21.7 × 19.5 μm, and have a L/W ratio of 1.1; a
