Apocrine adenocarcinoma of the vulva.

Cutaneous vulvar carcinomas are predominantly of squamous cell carcinoma type. Primary vulvar adenocarcinomas are rare with a poorly understood histogenesis. They are classified into extramammary Paget's disease, sweat gland carcinomas, and breast-like adenocarcinomas of the vulva. Adenocarcinomas, originating from Bartholin glands, can also present as vulvar adenocarcinoma. Rare adenocarcinomas with apocrine features have been described in the literature. The origin of these neoplasms from the native apocrine sweat glands or from anogenital mammary-like glands is still debatable. We report he

Immunohistochemistry of GCDFP-24 and zinc alpha2 glycoprotein in benign sweat gland tumors.

The immunohistochemical localization of two other proteins that are present in breast gross cystic disease fluid, GCDFP-24 and zinc alpha 2 glycoprotein (Zn2GP), were studied in normal skin and in 41 benign sweat gland tumors. GCDFP-24 was localized to apocrine glands. There was no staining of eccrine glands or ducts. There was positive staining in the following sweat gland tumors: apocrine hidrocystoma (four of five), hidradenoma papilliferum (two of four), syringocystadenoma papilliferum (six of seven), mixed tumor (one of one), and glandular elements of cylindroma (one of four). No staining

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma: Case report and literature review.

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinomas are rare cutaneous adnexal neoplasm with less than 100 cases reported in the literature. The tumor arises in areas rich in apocrine glands particularly axilla, modified apocrine glands such as ceromucinous and Moll's glands. Most of these carcinomas are indolent and slowly growing but few rapidly progressive and extremely aggressive? cases have also been reported. Wide local excision with clear margins and sentinel lymph node biopsy is standard treatment of choice. This case was of much interest from the diagnostic point of view both microscopically as well

Neural control of sweat secretion: a review.

BACKGROUND: Humans have 4 million exocrine sweat glands, which can be classified into two types: eccrine and apocrine glands. Sweat secretion, a constitutive feature, is directly involved in thermoregulation and metabolism, and is regulated by both the central nervous system (CNS) and autonomic nervous system (ANS). OBJECTIVES: To explore how sweat secretion is controlled by both the CNS and the ANS and the mechanisms behind the neural control of sweat secretion. METHODS: We conducted a literature search on PubMed for reports in English from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2016. RESULTS AND C

Vulvar apocrine adenocarcinoma: a case with nodal metastasis and intranodal mucinous differentiation.

Primary vulvar adenocarcinomas are rare tumors, and their histogenesis is not fully understood. They are classified into extramammary Paget's disease, sweat gland carcinomas, and "breast-like" adenocarcinomas of the vulva. The latter resemble adenocarcinomas arising in the breast morphologically and immunophenotypically. Rare cases of adenocarcinoma with apocrine features have been reported, and whether these neoplasms originate from the "native apocrine" sweat glands or from "anogenital mammary-like" glands are still debatable. The presence of normal mammary-like glands in the vicinity of the

Cutaneous apocrine-derived eyelid lesions: a series.

Eyelid lesions with apocrine differentiation are uncommon. A retrospective review of 1,920 biopsied sweat gland lesions at a tertiary hospital's ocular pathology laboratory from 2006 to 2024 revealed seven unique cutaneous eyelid tumors with sweat gland apocrine differentiation. The distinct clinical presentation and histopathologic features of the selected eyelid tumors are described. The lesions were further differentiated based on immunohistochemical analysis. Seven patients were identified with enlarging unilateral eyelid sweat gland lesions. All lesions underwent excisional biopsy and dem

[Palpebral hidrocystoma].

Palpebral hidrocystomas are benign tumors also known as cystic apocrine adenoma, cyst of sweat gland, apocrine retention cyst or cyst of Moll. They originate from eccrine or apocrine sweat glands and often occur on the face and the eyelids. Other atypical locations such as the chest, the shoulders and the foreskin have been reported. Hidrocystoma is a small translucent, shiny cyst. It appears as single or multiple cystic lesion. Their histogenesis is uncertain. Indeed, apocrine hidrocystoma could arise from the residuals of the primitive apocrine glands or of the gland of Moll. The eccrine hid

A reappraisal of eyelid eccrine and apocrine hidrocystomas: microanatomic and immunohistochemical studies of 40 lesions.

PURPOSE: To establish reliable criteria for diagnosing eyelid eccrine and apocrine hidrocystomas. DESIGN: Retrospective clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study. METHODS: Twenty-two specimens of normal portions of eyelids were evaluated to establish the distribution and microanatomy of eccrine and apocrine glands. Immunostaining for cytokeratin 7 (CK7), gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 (GCDFP-15), alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was performed on these tissues and on 40 lesions in 33 patients diagnosed with e

The absence of apoeccrine glands in the human axilla has disease pathogenetic implications, including axillary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: The existence of a third type of sweat gland in human axillary skin, the apoeccrine gland, with a capacity to produce much higher sweat output than the eccrine gland, was proposed from examination of microdissected glands. However, previous studies of axillary skin glands did not examine the entire individual glandular structure via serial sections and the markers used to identify the different glands gave conflicting results and, hence, the existence of the apoeccrine gland remains controversial. OBJECTIVES: To investigate human axillary sweat glands by serial section histology a

Postauricular apocrine hidrocystoma: a case and dermoscopy review.

Apocrine hidrocystoma (AH) is a benign cystic proliferation of apocrine sweat glands that classically presents as a slow-growing nodule on the face, especially in the periorbital region. Histopathological evaluation is required to definitively diagnose an apocrine hidrocystoma. Previous studies have described apocrine hidrocystomas in unusual locations. However, the authors have identified only two reported cases of apocrine hidrocystoma in the postauricular region. We present a third case of a postauricular hidrocystoma in a 26-year-old woman, as well as a brief review of the dermoscopic find

[Fox-Fordyce disease (apocrine miliaria)].

A 1-year follow-up in a 12 year old girl suffering from Fox-Fordyce disease is reported. Reddish papules were found in the typical locations in the regions with a high density of apocrine glands. A biopsy specimen showed keratin plugs in the infundibula of apocrine glands. Since hormone therapy could not yet be given, external therapy only was performed, with good results.

First male apocrine genital carcinoma mimicking a penile cancer.

Perineal apocrine carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor that has its origin in the apocrine sudoriparous glands of the genital and perianal regions. It often progresses quietly and metastasizes in the superficial inguinal and retrorectal lymph nodes. We report a case of a genital apocrine carcinoma located at the penile basis. To our knowledge our report represents the first case of a pathologically confirmed genital apocrine carcinoma mimicking a penile cancer.

Cutaneous apocrine cystomatosis in three slaughter-aged pigs.

Apocrine cystomatosis is a rare condition characterized by clusters of cystically dilated sweat glands or other specialized apocrine glands. Cystic dilation of cutaneous sweat glands has been described in humans, dogs, and cats, but not in pigs, to our knowledge. We describe herein linear, brown, colloid-filled cavities < 1 cm diameter within the subcutaneous fat of the entire dorsal region of carcasses of three 6-mo-old pigs. These incidental findings were detected during meat inspection in 3 different slaughterhouses in Catalonia, Spain. Histopathology revealed multiple cystic cavities lined

Malignant sweat gland tumours: an update.

Cutaneous adnexal tumours can be a diagnostic challenge for the pathologist. This is particularly true in the case of tumours with sweat gland differentiation, due to a large number of rare entities, a multiplicity of names to designate the same neoplasms and consequent lack of consensus regarding their classification and nomenclature. In the traditional view, sweat gland tumours were divided into eccrine and apocrine. However, this has been challenged in recent years, and in fact many of these tumours may have both eccrine and apocrine variants. Some display more complex features and defy cla

A case of generalised cutaneous apocrine cystomatosis in a Pekingese dog.

Clinical, histological and immunohistochemical examination of a 13-year-old male client-owned Pekingese dog revealed an uncommon presentation of apocrine cutaneous cystomatosis. This is a rare non-neoplastic condition of uncertain cause, characterised by multiple cystically dilated apocrine sweat glands. We aimed to describe the features of this unusual case of generalised cutaneous apocrine cystomatosis in the dog, which can be useful to distinguish it from multifocal benign cystic apocrine tumours.

Aggressive Primary Cutaneous Apocrine Carcinoma of the Scalp: A Clinical Case Report.

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma (PCAC) is a rare malignancy originating from the apocrine glands of the skin. It is predominantly found in regions rich in apocrine glands, such as the axilla and anogenital area. Scalp involvement is rare, and the disease's aggressive behavior further complicates its management. A 78-year-old male with a history of primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma (PCAC) of the neck, previously managed with craniotomy, radiation, and chemotherapy, presented five years later with recurrence and bone metastasis. Six years after the initial diagnosis, he developed enlargi
