Appendiceal endometriosis is a rare entity and, when accompanied by intestinal metaplasia, represents a challenging differential diagnosis with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN). We present the case of a 47 years-old woman, with multiple surgical interventions for endometriosis, with persistent symptoms despite chronic hormonal treatment, with imaging showing stage IV endometriosis. Hence, en bloc low rectum resection with total hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy was performed, followed by appendectomy. Unexpectedly, despite the gross normal macroscopic appearance of the appen

PURPOSE: To identify clinicopathological features for the differential diagnosis of appendiceal serrated lesions and polyps (SPs) and low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) for the purpose of avoiding over-diagnosis.
METHODS: Clinical data and pathological features of 66 patients with SPs diagnosed at the Aerospace Center Hospital between January 2013 and January 2021 were collected and compared to 22 cases of LAMN.
RESULTS: SPs, compared with LAMN, are likely to be associated with acute inflammation (SPs 53.0% vs. LAMN 18.2%), and may be located in the appendix partly, although with

INTRODUCTION: A subset of patients with acute appendicitis presents with complicated disease characterized by periappendiceal abscess. Although appendiceal neoplasms are rare in uncomplicated appendicitis, recent evidence suggests a higher incidence in patients with appendicitis complicated by abscess, particularly in older adults. Because preoperative imaging has limited accuracy for tumor detection, the optimal management strategy remains debated. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the incidence, histology, diagnostic limitations, and management implications of appendiceal

OBJECTIVES: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare tumor with limited malignant potential but a risk of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) if perforation occurs. We aimed to characterize clinicopathological features, assess recurrence risk, and evaluate postoperative surveillance.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 44 patients with pathologically confirmed LAMN who underwent surgery at our institution between 2010 and 2025. Clinicopathological factors, recurrence, and surveillance strategies, including tumor markers and computed tomography (CT), were analyzed. Recurrence-free su

PURPOSE: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare tumors with heterogeneous pathology, typically treated with appendectomy, cecectomy, right hemicolectomy, or cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Survival outcomes across surgical approaches remain unclear. We evaluated the outcomes of all surgical interventions for appendiceal mucinous neoplasms.
METHODS: Eligible randomized controlled trials and cohort studies were retrieved from Cochrane, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus to August, 2026. Outcomes included overall and disease-free survival, recurrence,

BACKGROUND: Incomplete cytoreduction for mucinous appendiceal neoplasms is often required to temporarily alleviate symptoms. The surgical technology for this intervention may be complex and result in extensive morbidity and even mortality. Knowledgeable patient selection for this surgery is mandatory.
METHODS: A database was used to identify patients who had palliative surgery that included total abdominal colectomy (TAC). Clinical- and treatment-related variables were assessed for their impact on overall survival.
RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients had an incomplete cytoreductive surgery (CRS)

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) can occur concurrently with appendiceal sessile serrated lesions (SSLs). To interrogate relatedness, we performed multigene and immunohistochemical characterizations of paired and unpaired SSLs and LAMNs. We evaluated 62 serrated lesions from 50 appendectomy specimens for hotspot mutations in BRAF, KRAS, and GNAS genes. Cases were subdivided into 3 groups: 20 unpaired SSLs, 18 unpaired LAMNs, and 12 with an SSL and concurrent LAMN. β-catenin and Annexin A10 immunostaining were performed on the SSL and LAMN components in the 12 paired cases, and

BACKGROUND: Management of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) with positive resection margin is controversial. Some guidelines recommend surgical reexcision, whereas others recommend a conservative approach. The purpose of our study was to determine whether involvement of the resection margin by LAMN is a risk factor for local recurrence requiring additional surgery.
DESIGN: This is a retrospective study (January 2000-December 2020) of uncomplicated LAMNs with neoplastic epithelium or dissecting mucin at the resection margin. For cases treated with additional surgery, the presence

A 75‒year‒old man consulted our hospital with abdominal pain and fever. He was diagnosed as abscess‒forming appendicitis by contrast‒enhanced computed tomography(CT), and underwent conservative treatment and CT‒guided drainage. CT‒guided drainage revealed no abscess. Follow‒up contrast‒enhanced CT and MRI revealed a diagnosis of appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and peritoneal pseudomyxoma. Hence, the treatment strategy was operation. Intraoperative findings revealed mucus deposits in the right paracolic gutter and around the liver. The mucus was examined cytologically, but no malignant findings w

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Appendiceal lesions are a common cause of abdominal pain. The most prevalent pathologic entities are inflammatory lesions, whereas neoplastic lesions are relatively uncommon. Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are rare neoplastic tumors found in appendectomy specimens. Previously, appendectomy was required for appendiceal lesions. Endoscopic transcecal appendectomy (ETA) is a novel approach that allows the appendiceal lesion to be completely resected and prevents postoperative appendicitis. This case presents ETA as an alternative for management of low-grade AMNs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The standard of care for treatment of an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with peritoneal dissemination is cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). These two treatments are combined in the operating room. A crucial requirement for benefit long-term is proper patient selection. Clinical and histopathologic prognostic indicators are used, along with the patient's fitness for surgery, to select patients to receive CRS and HIPEC.
METHODS: This study seeks to identify the reliable prognostic indicators for four different g

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms (ANENs) are usually found incidentally during histology examination after appendectomy for appendicitis. Due to their rarity in pediatric populations, there is no consensus on treatment or follow-up. The analysis of patients with ANENs of our and other studies will increase the understanding of this tumor.
METHODS: Pediatric patients with ANENs were uniformly managed at our center between 1998 and 2023. Patients' presenting symptoms, surgery, tumor histology, post-surgical work-up, follow-up and outcome were analyzed.
RESULTS: Our r

Introduction Appendiceal neoplasms are more prevalent in patients ≥ 40 years old who present with complicated appendicitis, especially if managed conservatively. Routine interval appendicectomy is not recommended. Follow-up bowel screening using both a CT scan and colonoscopy is recommended. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many units have increased their utilization of non-operative management of acute appendicitis (NOM). This provides an optimal population sample to study the incidence of unexpected appendiceal malignancy compared to a similar cohort that underwent operative management. The

A low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare condition, occurring in 0.08-4.1% of appendectomy cases. Although this condition is frequently asymptomatic, it may occasionally result in acute complications, including torsion and rupture. We report the case of a 33-year-old male who presented with upper abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) revealed a 3 cm cystic lesion in the appendix with 360° torsion at its base. Laparoscopic surgery confirmed the torsion, and the appendix was successfully resected without mucin spillage. Histopathological examination confi

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a fibroinflammatory condition characterized by chronic activation of the immune system and a tendency to form tumorous lesions. IgG4-RD is frequently characterized by the presence of tumor-like masses affecting multiple organs and is easily mistaken for a malignant neoplasm. However, IgG4-RD affecting the appendix is extremely rare, with only seven cases reported previously. We report the case of a woman in her early 60s who presented with insidious abdominal pain and radiological findings mimicking appendiceal neoplasms. After diagnosing appendic

Appendiceal neoplasms are uncommon; most are identified by pathologic examination after appendectomy for presumed appendicitis or as an incidental finding. When found incidentally, patients are typically asymptomatic. If the neoplasm has perforated, patients may present with symptoms that mimic acute appendicitis. In advanced disease, patients may have systemic symptoms associated with peritoneal disease, including abdominal distension, weight loss, and diffuse abdominal pain. Because of their rarity, as well as rapidly evolving research on the subject, the nomenclature of appendiceal mucinous

In patients operated for a suspected appendiceal neoplasm, radical appendectomy is the procedure of choice because it provides definitive treatment in most of appendiceal neoplasms, except from mucinous or colonic-type adenocarcinoma and NET>2 cm.

PURPOSE: Non-operative management of acute uncomplicated appendicitis has shown promising results but might carry the risk of delayed diagnosis of premalignant or malignant appendiceal tumors found by chance in 0.7-2.5% of appendiceal specimen after appendectomy. Purpose of this study was to analyze whether appendiceal tumors are associated with a complicated appendicitis and to determine risk factors for appendiceal neoplasm and malignancy in patients with acute appendicitis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1033 adult patients, who underwent appendectomy for acute appendici

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare malignancy with symptoms varying depending on the clinical manifestations. The most worrisome complication of this particular neoplasm is seeding of mucin into the adjacent peritoneum leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). There is a lack of standardized treatment approach; however, an appendectomy-only approach is currently being used for the resection of non-metastatic disease. We present an unusual case of a 67-year-old male found to have LAMN status post elective appendectomy, six months after being treated for an appendiceal absce

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms constitute a diagnostic spectrum ranging from adenoma to mucinous adenocarcinoma. To date, many classification systems have been proposed to reflect the histomorphological diversity of neoplasms in this range and their clinical correspondence, and also to form a common terminology between the pathologist and clinicians. The aim of this review is to provide an updated perspective on the pathological features of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms. Using the 2016 Modified Delphi Consensus Protocol (Delphi) and the Eighth Edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer
