Elizabethkingia anophelis (E. anophelis) is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen in hospital aquatic environments associated with severe infections. Reports of E. anophelis infection in hemodialysis patients are rare, and meningitis caused by this organism has been poorly characterized. We report a fatal case of meningitis in a hemodialysis patient caused by E. anophelis bacteremia and review previous cases of E. anophelis infection in hemodialysis patients. A 68-year-old man with end-stage renal disease due to diabetic kidney disease on maintenance hemodialysis was admitted with fev

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), remains a major global health threat, highlighting the need for novel therapeutic strategies. Host-directed therapies (HDTs), particularly autophagy induction via natural or pharmacological agents, offer promising strategies for combating mycobacteria. This study assessed the anti-mycobacterial potential of marine-derived Streptomyces spp. Briefly, the isolated marine Streptomyces spp. underwent primary and secondary screenings to assess their inhibitory activity against M. smegmatis. Notably, the cell-free extract o

Drugs such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies are known to find their way into rivers, lakes and seas, and have the potential to affect reproduction and development of the wildlife. The knowledge of the reproductive mechanisms and their regulation in aquatic species is of fundamental importance for predicting and preventing the damage by the increasing release of such chemicals in the environment. Mifepristone, a synthetic steroid used as a drug for chemical abortion, works by blocking the effects of progesterone. Its presence in fresh and salt water has been reported, re

Antiviral drugs are a cornerstone in the first line of antiviral therapy and their demand rises consistently with increments in viral infections and successive outbreaks. The drugs enter the waters due to improper disposal methods or via human excreta following their consumption; consequently, many of them are now classified as emerging pollutants. Hereby, we review the global dissemination of these medications throughout different water bodies and thoroughly investigate the associated risk they pose to the aquatic fauna, particularly our vertebrate relative fish, which has great economic and

The process of hemoglobin polymerization and the consequent sickling of red blood cells that occurs in patients with sickle cell disease shortens the half-life of red blood cells. It causes vaso-occlusive complications, as well as pain and pulmonary and cardiovascular dysfunction. We evaluated an aquatic rehabilitation program used for patients with sickle cell anemia and examined the possible benefits that exercise in warm water has for the circulatory system, for relieving pain, and for increasing lung capacity. The patient was a 32-year-old female. The parameters that we used in this study

Aeromonas hydrophila, widely distributed in various aquatic environments, is recognized as emerging opportunistic pathogens mainly causing gastrointestinal and wound infections. Necrotizing fasciitis and gas gangrene attributable to A. hydrophila are believed to develop mainly in immunocompromised hosts and have required amputation as a life-saving measure in many of these individuals. The present case re-emphasizes the virulent nature of this organism requiring amputation even in an immunocompetent host and hence, the critical need for early recognition and appropriate targeted therapy, espec

The prevailing paradigm states that cancer cells acquire multiple genetic mutations in oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes whose respective activation/up-regulation or loss of function serve to impart aberrant properties, such as hyperproliferation or inhibition of cell death. However, a tumor is now considered as an organ-like structure, a complex system composed of multiple cell types (e.g., tumor cells, inflammatory cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, etc.) all embedded in an inflammatory stroma. All these components influence each other in a complex and dynamic cross-talk, leading to tu

Potomac horse fever (PHF) is a common cause of equine colitis in endemic areas. Until recently, the only causative agent known to cause PHF was Neorickettsia risticii. However, N. findlayensis has been isolated from affected horses. Horses typically become infected upon ingestion of Neorickettsia spp.-infected trematodes within aquatic insects. The most common clinical signs include diarrhea, fever, anorexia, lethargy and colic. The diagnostic test of choice for PHF is PCR of blood and feces. Tetracyclines remain an effective treatment. Supportive care, including fluid therapy, colloid adminis

We report a case of a chronic mesotympanic otitis media with a smelly purulent secretion from both ears and recurrent otalgia over the last five years in a six-year-old girl after swimming in the German Baltic Sea. Besides Staphylococcus aureus a non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae strain could be isolated from patient samples. An antibiotic therapy with ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone was administered followed by atticotomy combined with tympanoplasty. We conclude that V. cholerae should not be overlooked as a differential diagnosis to otitis infections, especially when patients present with extra-

Gnathostomiasis is an emerging disease in non-endemic countries. This zoonotic nematode requires aquatic freshwater environments to complete its life cycle where larvae get encrusted in fishes. Typically, the infection manifests as migratory subcutaneous lesion caused by the larvae trak, which produces an eosinophilic panniculitis. Here we describe a patient who presented a migratory lesion with no response to antimicrobial therapy, a careful travel and food history together with specific laboratory tests led to the correct diagnosis. Gnathostomiasis should be suspected in patients with migrat

The genus Exophiala is composed of ubiquitous, pigmented, saprotrophic fungi and includes both terrestrial and waterborne species. Though Exophiala species are generally considered opportunistic pathogens, exophialosis can be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in aquatic and semi-aquatic species. Over a 6-year period, a captive 32-year-old male eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis), was treated for recurring, slow growing, ventral midline cutaneous masses. Excisional biopsies were characterized histologically by granulomatous dermatitis with low numbers of

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic Edwardsiella tarda (E. tarda) infections usually have an acute course. Chronic infection is rare. We report a chronic refractory ulcer caused by E. tarda after a freshwater stingray injury.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 32-year-old male diver sustained a stingray barb puncture wound to the right knee. The wound remained inflamed despite initial treatment and progressed to a deep ulcer with an 8-cm sinus tract. Bacterial culture confirmed E. tarda. Treatment included repeated surgical debridement, negative pressure wound therapy, and intravenous cefuroxime

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade aquatic exercise has become more and more popular. One of the latest trends is aqua-cycling, where participants sit on a water-resistant stationary bike and, while immersed chest deep in the water, combine continuous cycling with upper body exercises that utilise water resistance. Since stationary cycling and aquatic exercises are frequently recommended to patients with knee osteoarthritis, combining both would seem an obvious step, and an aqua-cycling exercise programme for patients with knee osteoarthritis has indeed been developed. This study protocol gives
