Discovery of chlorine exposure signatures in plant material using targeted and comparative mass spectrometry methods.

Recent uses of chlorine gas in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention are difficult to identify through chemical analysis as unique signatures of exposure have not been identified. We exposed living pine seedlings and English ivy to chlorine gas, extracted the pine needles, and analyzed the extracts by liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-qTOF) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF). Data from exposed seedlings was compared to unexposed seedlings and bleach-treated seedlings using commercial and Battelle proprietary softwa

Regulation and microbial response mechanism of nitric oxide to copper-containing swine wastewater treated by Pistia stratiotes.

As a signaling molecule, Nitric oxide (NO) has been widely used in abiotic stress mitigation studies.Pistia stratiotes showed a good synergistic removal effect on heavy metals, nitrogen and phosphorus, but the high concentration of copper(Cu) in swine wastewater inhibited the comprehensive removal ability of Pistia stratiotes. At present, it is not clear how the addition of NO regulates the stress resistance mechanism of Pistia stratiotes to copper in swine wastewater, and the microbial response mechanism accompanying this process is not yet clear. Therefore, in the concentration range of 0.31

Utilizing Morphological and Physiological Parameters of Lemna minor for Assessing Tetracyclines' Removal.

Antibiotics with significant environmental toxicity, e.g., tetracyclines (TCs), are often used in large quantities worldwide, with 50-80% of the applied dose ending up in the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and minocycline hydrochloride (MIN) on L. minor. Our research evaluated the phytotoxicity of the TCs by analyzing plant growth and biomass and evaluating assimilation pigment levels and fluorescence. The research was extended with the ability potential of duckweed as a tool for removing TCs from water/wastewater. The re

Decomposition of Wolffia arrhiza residues rapidly increases mineral nitrogen and decreases extractable phosphorus in acidic soils.

While nutrient loads from anthropogenic sources upset aquatic ecosystem balance, Wolffia arrhiza (duckweed) has capacity to purge nutrient-rich water if continuously harvested. The nutrients accumulated in biomass have potential as soil fertility amendments. The objective of this study was to determine changes in release of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), and the fate of P in soils after duckweed biomass amendment. An incubation experiment was conducted at 25 °C using three soils amended with proportions equivalent to 501, 1002 and 1503 mg N kg-1 and 62, 124 and 186 mg P kg-1. Soil samples we

The oxygen supply to thermogenic flowers.

Thermogenic flowers produce heat by intense respiration, and the rates of O2 consumption (Ṁo2) in some species can exceed those of all other tissues of plants and most animals. By exposing intact flowers to a range of O2 pressures (Po2) and measuring Ṁo2, we demonstrate that the highest respiration rates exceed the capacity of the O2 diffusive pathway and become diffusion limited in atmospheric air. The male florets on the inflorescence of Arum concinnatum have the highest known mass-specific Ṁo2 and can be severely diffusion limited. Intact spadices of Japanese skunk cabbage Symplocarpus reni

Carbon monoxide promotes flowering in Lemna gibba via a nitric oxide-dependent oxidative stress pathway.

Carbon monoxide promotes flowering in Lemna gibba via a nitric oxide-dependent oxidative stress pathway involving a CO → NO → ROS signaling cascade. This novel redox-regulated mechanism offers new insights into floral transition, which is distinct from conventional photoperiod-dependent pathways. Carbon monoxide is increasingly recognized as a signaling molecule in plant systems; however, its role in reproductive development remains poorly understood. This study showed that carbon monoxide promotes flowering in Lemna gibba through a novel pathway involving nitric oxide and reactive oxygen spec

Gene expression and metabolite levels converge in the thermogenic spadix of skunk cabbage.

The inflorescence (spadix) of skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus renifolius) is strongly thermogenic and can regulate its temperature at around 23 °C even when the ambient temperature drops below freezing. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying developmentally controlled thermogenesis and thermoregulation in skunk cabbage, we conducted a comprehensive transcriptome and metabolome analysis across 3 developmental stages of spadix development. Our RNA-seq analysis revealed distinct groups of expressed genes, with selenium-binding protein 1/methanethiol oxidase (SBP1/MTO) exhibiting the highest levels in

Functional and histological effects of Anthurium schlechtendalii Kunth extracts on adenine-induced kidney damage of adult Wistar rats.

Anthurium schlechtendalii Kunth is used by the Zoque group in southeastern Mexico for kidney and urinary diseases, but its safety and effectiveness are unproven, therefore a model of adenine-induced renal failure in rats was performed. The rats were fed with solid and aqueous plant extracts for 4 weeks to study its effects on kidney histological morphology. Kidneys were examined, and statistical analysis was performed. The adenine-containing diet caused renal failure, characterized by crystal deposits, cystic dilatation of tubules, and micro-abscesses. Both extracts caused tubular damage and c

Phytoremediation potential of Myriophyllum aquaticum and Pistia stratiotes to modify antibiotic growth promoters, tetracycline, and oxytetracycline, in aqueous wastewater systems.

Antibiotics are frequently used in the United States as feed efficiency promoters and medicines for livestock that is destined for human consumption. These antibiotics are released into the environment through the runoff and wastewater streams from animal feedlots and land applications of manure. The exposure of microorganisms to these antibiotics has reportedly resulted in the development of resistant species of microorganisms, which in turn can lead to human health hazards. Phytoremediation of these antibiotics can be a useful tool for countering this problem. Aquatic plants, Myriophyllum aq

Endophytes as sources of antibiotics.

Until a viable alternative can be accessible, the emergence of resistance to antimicrobials requires the constant development of new antibiotics. Recent scientific efforts have been aimed at the bioprospecting of microorganisms' secondary metabolites, with special emphasis on the search for antimicrobial natural products derived from endophytes. Endophytes are microorganisms that inhabit the internal tissues of plants without causing apparent harm to the plant. The present review article compiles recent (2006-2016) literature to provide an update on endophyte research aimed at finding metaboli

Central inhibitory effects of water extract of Acori graminei rhizoma in mice.

The present study evaluated in mice the central inhibitory effects of a water extract of shichangpu (Acori graminei rhizoma (AGR), the dry rhizome of Acorus gramineus Soland. (Araceae)). AGR (0.5-5.0 g/kg) dose-dependently decreased the locomotor activity and increased the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, but had no significant effect on the treadmill performance. AGR also dose-dependently inhibited the intensity of apomorphine-induced stereotypic behavior. At the highest dose (5.0 g/kg), AGR had a weak anticonvulsant effect on the pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures. Receptor binding assay

Untangling the Arisaema enigma: Investigating the complex evolutionary history and species relationships in North American Arisaema.

PREMISE: The evolutionary history of morphologically variable plant groups is often obscured by cryptic diversity, morphological convergence, and limited genetic data. Arisaema, a diverse genus within Araceae, exemplifies these challenges. Although some taxonomic treatments recognize only two species of North American Arisaema (A. dracontium and A. triphyllum), other studies have identified morphologically distinct groups within both taxa. Here, we reconstructed evolutionary relationships in North American Arisaema, assessed genetic structure and admixture, and tested the monophyly of proposed
