Intrasellar arachnoid cysts are an uncommon pathology, with only a few cases reported in scientific literature. Their physiopathology is still unknown, with different hypothesis about their development. Differential diagnosis with other cystic sellar lesions is difficult. We report two cases of two intrasellar arachnoid cysts that were treated surgically using transsphenoidal approach and present a review of the literature.

Two quadrigeminal arachnoid cysts with different pathogenesis are described in 2 different species. A 10-week-old male Persian kitten with a progressively decreasing level of consciousness died spontaneously. At necropsy, mild internal hydrocephalus, caudal cerebellar coning, and cerebellar herniation through the foramen magnum were associated with a congenital quadrigeminal arachnoid cyst compressing the rostral cerebellum and shifting the entire cerebellum caudally. In contrast, a possibly acquired quadrigeminal cyst was observed in a 2-year-old male neutered Yorkshire Terrier in association

INTRODUCTION: With a high likelihood of clinical improvement and low rates of complications, minimally invasive neuroendoscopic surgery is becoming the treatment of choice for symptomatic or growing arachnoid cysts. In neuroendoscopic surgery, visualization of anatomical landmarks is essential in achieving successful fenestration without complications. Because of the restricted visual field in neuroendoscopic surgery, preoperative anatomical assessment is very helpful. Magnetic resonance cisternography (MRC) with high spatial resolution and contrast, using for example 3-D Fourier transformatio

OBJECT: Arachnoid cysts are commonly encountered fluid collections in the central nervous system. Recent advances in neuroimaging have translated into an increased detection of these cysts; that is, diagnoses can be made more frequently at earlier stages. Significant advances have also been made in the surgical management of these lesions. The authors report on a case series that illustrates the diverse forms of presentation and the treatment modalities commonly used for arachnoid cysts.
METHODS: Between January 2002 and December 2006, 20 patients with arachnoid cysts underwent surgery perfor

INTRODUCTION: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts are an uncommon cause of neural compression in children. Even more uncommon is the association of such cysts with spina bifida occulta.
MATERIAL: Two girls, 12 and 8-years-old, presented with left leg pain, deteriorating gait, clinical signs of left L5 and S1 root compression, without bladder or bowel symptoms. The first patient had left foot drop. The second patient had muscle wasting and smaller left foot with pes cavus. Radiographs showed spina bifida occulta of S1 in both. MRI revealed an extradural cyst at the S1 level, indenting the thecal

The authors investigated cognition in patients with arachnoid cysts by assessing 55 patients and 32 control subjects on four different cognitive tests preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. The patients improved their performance from preoperative to postoperative testing, whereas the control subjects did not show a similar improvement.

Arachnoid cyst of the middle cranial fossa has never been reported to present with sensorineural hearing impairment. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl who complained of progressive hearing loss on the right side for 4 years. The pure tone audiometry revealed sensorineural hearing loss with an average of 63 dB, and the auditory brain stem response demonstrated absence of all waves on the right side. Magnetic resonance imaging showed giant arachnoid cysts occupying the bilateral middle cranial fossa and extending to the parietal and prepontine areas with the atrophic change of the right f

Eight cases of intracranial arachnoid cysts are reported. They are benign congenital lesions who result from an abnormal development of the earliest arachnoid. A subsequent development is possible. The macrocephaly is the first sign and other symptoms give evidence to the localization. Thanks to the C.T. scan one can make the diagnosis, appraise the repercussion and put the therapeutic indications. The surgical treatment is reserved to symptomatic forms. The peritoneal shunt takes the ablation's place. This method is easier and less liable to complications. The results depend on the localizati

This paper describes the clinical picture and radiological findings of 12 cases of "idiopathic" arachnoid cyst in the middle fossa which the authors have encountered during the past 12 years. Their results are as follows. 1) The age of the patient in 10 out of 12 cases was under 15 years of age, and 8 cases were males. The site of the cyst was on the left side in 9 cases. 2) On plain skull radiography, thinning and bulging of the temporal bone by the lesion, elevation of the lesser wing of the sphenoid, and forward projection of the greater wing of the sphenoid were observed in all cases. 3) O

INTRODUCTION: Quadrigeminal arachnoid cyst (QAC) associated with encephalocele is rare; and while some treatments have been developed in recent years, no definite therapeutic approach for QAC has been established. Endoscopic treatment for arachnoid cyst is gaining popularity because it is relatively less invasive to the normal brain tissues.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 4-year-old girl, presented with QAC associated with congenital occipital encephalocele. At the age of 1 month, repair of the perinatal encephalocele had been performed at another institute. An asymptomatic arachnoid cyst

The patient was a 49-year-old woman with a chief complaint of hip and buttock pain that had persisted for 3 years. She visited our hospital for aggravation of the pain. Percussion tenderness of the spinous process was observed and a T1-low, T2-high cystic lesion was detected on the dorsal side of the dural canal at the 12th thoracic vertebral level on MRI performed by a previous physician. Plane CT showed severe scalloping at the same level. During laminectomy for the 11th and 12th thoracic vertebrae, a cystic lesion of about 60 × 25 mm was noted on the dorsal side of the dural canal, with a c

Intracranial arachnoidal cysts (AC) are relevant due to their space-demanding character. The pathophysiological sequelae are dependent on the size and location of the cyst and the patient's age. Direct pressure on surrounding tissue causes headaches (meninges) or rarely seizures (brain tissue). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation disturbances resulting from brain mass displacement with occlusion of, for example, the foramen monroi or the aqueduct cause occlusive hydrocephalus, which can lead to an increase in intracranial pressure. Depending on age, the typical primary clinical symptoms or f

A 4-week-old male infant presented with hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and hyperbilirubinemia. His medical history was remarkable for hydrocephalus secondary to an arachnoid cyst, intermittent hypoglycemia, hypothermia, and poor feeding requiring nasogastric tube for nutrition. Physical exam revealed retrognathia, mild hypotonia, micropenis, and clinodactyly. Ophthalmologic exam demonstrated bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH). Laboratory data confirmed inadequate cortisol and growth hormone response to hypoglycemia, a low thyroxine level, and direct hyperbilirubinemia. Magnetic resonance imagi

Surgical options for suprasellar arachnoid cyst are cystoperitoneal shunt, craniotomy fenestration and endoscopic fenestration. Endoscopic management has been found to be safe and effective. We report our experience with endoscopic management in 12 (male five, female seven; age range 8 months to 42 years) patients with suprasellar arachnoid cyst. The endoscopic procedure included lateral ventricle puncture by precoronal burr hole and superior and inferior wall of the cyst was communicated with the lateral ventricle and the interpeduncular cistern respectively. All patients had hydrocephalus. F

The authors report an unusual case of a child who presented with progressive paraparesis that lasted 15 days, revealing an intramedullary cystic lesion extending from T(3) to T(4) as detected with spine magnetic resonance imaging. A laminotomy from T(3) to T(4) was performed and the lesion removed. Histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of arachnoid cyst. After surgery, the patient's neurological status improved. At the 4-month follow-up examination, the results of his neurological examinations remained normal. Arachnoid cyst is an entity that should be included in the differential

INTRODUCTION: Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rarely seen, sporadic disorder with a wide range of abnormalities including asymmetrical overgrowth, skin lesions, dysregulated adipose tissue, and vascular malformations. Brain and spinal malformations are extremely rare; syringohydromyelia and arachnoid cyst have not been reported previously.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a 5-year-old girl with PS having severe central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including craniocutaneous lipomatosis, hemimegalencephaly, arachnoid cyst, and syringohydromyeli

In this report, we present a case of non-traumatic intradiploic arachnoid cyst in a 65 year-old woman with a slow growing swelling in the right frontotemporal region without a history of head trauma, which was diagnosed intra-operatively. Extradural intracranial location of non-traumatic arachnoid cyst is a rare clinical entity with a few reported cases in the literature. Characteristic features of non-traumatic intradiploic arachnoid cysts are also described in this mini-review article.
