Rocio virus sustained circulation in Brazil: first infection case in a horse highlights the need for enhanced arbovirus surveillance.

Rocio virus (ROCV), a neurotropic arbovirus of the Orthoflavivirus genus, caused Brazil’s largest encephalitis outbreak in the 1970s but has since been rarely detected. We report the first ROCV encephalitis clinical case after nearly 40 years and isolated and sequenced the virus from CNS tissue of a horse. Metatranscriptomics enabled full-genome sequencing, revealing divergence from the reference sequence at an evolutionary rate of 5.8–7.0 × 10⁻⁴, consistent with Orthoflavivirus. Thirty-one non-synonymous substitutions were identified, with the envelope protein most affected. Findings indicate

Arbovirus Circulation among Patients with Acute Encephalitis: West Nile Virus Infection among Humans in Bangladesh, 2022.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging infectious disease causing neuroinvasive diseases, including meningitis and encephalitis. Although infection has been documented in birds in Bangladesh, WNV has not been detected in humans. Since 2007, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research in Bangladesh has conducted hospital-based acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) surveillance to monitor Japanese encephalitis (JE), which is typically detected in 2% to 3%. Our study aimed to determine the presence of WNV, dengue virus (DENV), and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) among persons enrolled in AES

Neurological and immunological characteristics of a novel immortalized bovine brainstem-derived cell line and its susceptibility to arbovirus infection.

Immortalized bovine neuronal cell lines provide a reliable in vitro model for studying interactions with bovine infectious pathogens that target the host nervous system. Although we previously established an immortalized fetal bovine brain-derived FBBC-1 cell line, there are currently no other bovine neuronal cell lines commonly available. In the present study, we developed a novel immortalized cell line, IKBM, derived from the adult bovine brainstem by transferring a SV40 large T antigen gene using lentiviral vectors, and compared its characteristics to the FBBC-1 cell line. As with FBBC-1 ce

Peripheral spectrum neurological disorder after arbovirus infection is associated with HLA-F variants among Northeastern Brazilians.

INTRODUCTION: Non-classical class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA) molecules are known to modulate the function of cytotoxic cells (NK and T CD8+) during viral infection by interacting with inhibitory/activating receptors. However, little is known about the HLA-E/-F genetic variability on arbovirus infections. METHODS: We evaluated by massive parallel sequencing the full HLA-E/-F genetic diversity among patients infected during the arbovirus (ZIKV, DENV, and CHIKV) outbreak leading to a broad range of neurological complications in the Brazilian State of Pernambuco. In parallel, healthy blood

Zoonotic arbovirus infections in cattle in Mozambique with special reference to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and rift valley fever virus (RVFV).

BACKGROUND: Arboviruses pose a great threat to public health in sub-Saharan African countries. Mozambique is located in a region that is prone to climate change-related devastation, including heavy rainfalls and severe droughts that favor the emergence of zoonotic viruses transmitted by arthropods such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae, CCHFV) and Rift Valley fever virus (Phlebovirus riftense, RVFV). Both viruses are closely associated with livestock farming, including cattle, and can cause symptoms of hemorrhagic fever in humans. Available previous data s

[Present status of an arbovirus infection: yellow fever, its natural history of hemorrhagic fever, Rift Valley fever].

In the early 20th century, when it was discovered that the yellow fever virus was transmitted in its urban cycle by Aedes aegypti, measures of control were introduced leading to its disappearance. Progressive neglect of the disease, however, led to a new outbreak in 1927 during which the etiological agent was isolated; some years later a vaccine was discovered and yellow fever disappeared again. In the 1960s, rare cases of encephalitis were observed in young children after vaccination and the administration of the vaccine was forbidden for children under 10 years. Five years later, a new outbr

Identification of a culturable fungal species and endosymbiotic bacteria in saliva of Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens and their impact on arbovirus infection in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito saliva plays a key role in arbovirus transmission and pathogenesis. It was shown that saliva contains several molecules that are essential for blood feeding. Recently, bacteria were also reported to be present in the saliva of Aedes albopictus and Anopheles mosquitoes. Nevertheless, information on the bacterial communities in Aedes and Culex saliva is still scarce. METHODS: This study isolated and identified culturable fungal and bacterial colonies from saliva harvested from Aedes aegypti (laboratory strain) and Culex pipiens (field-collected) mosquitoes. 16S metagenomic

Implementation of the One Health approach to fight arbovirus infections in the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region: Assessing integrated surveillance in Serbia, Tunisia and Georgia.

BACKGROUND: In the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region, arbovirus infections are emerging infectious diseases. Their surveillance can benefit from one health inter-sectoral collaboration; however, no standardized methodology exists to study One Health surveillance. METHODS: We designed a situation analysis study to document how integration of laboratory/clinical human, animal and entomological surveillance of arboviruses was being implemented in the Region. We applied a framework designed to assess three levels of integration: policy/institutional, data collection/data analysis and disseminati

Prior influenza virus infection alleviates an arbovirus encephalitis by reducing viral titer, inflammation, and cellular infiltrates in the central nervous system.

UNLABELLED: Respiratory and encephalitic virus infections represent a significant risk to public health globally. Detailed investigations of immunological responses and disease outcomes during sequential virus infections are rare. Here, we define the impact of influenza virus infection on a subsequent virus encephalitis. We used a model system in which mice were given influenza A virus (IAV) infection 8 days prior to Semliki Forest virus (SFV) infection (IAV→SFV). IAV infection clearly attenuated the subsequent SFV infection with reduced titers of infectious SFV and lower levels of cytokines a

Strengthening Preparedness for Arbovirus Infections in Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries: A Conceptual Framework to Assess Integrated Surveillance in the Context of the One Health Strategy.

In the context of One Health, there is presently an effort to integrate surveillance of human, animal, entomological, and environmental sectors. This aims to strengthen the prevention of, and preparedness against, arbovirus infections, also in the light of environmental and climate changes that could increase the risk of transmission. However, criteria to define integrated surveillance, and to compare different systems, still need to be identified and tested. We conducted a scoping review to identify and examine surveillance systems for West Nile virus (WNV), chikungunya virus (CHKV), dengue v

Surveillance of arbovirus infections in the Atlantic Forest Region, State of São Paulo, Brazil. I. Detection of hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies in wild birds between 1978 and 1990.

We report data related to arbovirus antibodies detected in wild birds periodically captured from January 1978 to December 1990 in the counties of Salesópolis (Casa Grande Station), Itapetininga and Ribeira Valley, considering the different capture environments. Plasmas were examined using hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests. Only monotypic reactions were considered, except for two heterotypic reactions in which a significant difference in titer was observed for a determined virus of the same antigenic group. Among a total of 39,911 birds, 269 birds (0.7%) belonging to 66 species and 22 fami

Shared viral burdens: Molecular evidence of Usutu virus infection and multi-arbovirus exposure in migrant and resident birds at wintering locations in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: West Nile (WNV), Usutu (USUV), and Sindbis (SINV) virus were initially detected in the African region, and subsequently across temperate regions where they were previously absent. Wild birds are primary reservoirs for these arboviruses and are considered major contributors to their global spread through seasonal migration. To understand the transmission dynamics of arboviruses in African wild birds and the potential of migratory birds to spread the viruses at an intercontinental scale, we investigated arboviral infections and exposures in resident and Palearctic migratory birds at

Concurrent cryptococcal and dengue meningoencephalitis as initial presentation of human immunodeficiency virus infection in a patient from arbovirus-endemic northeastern Brazil: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Co-infections involving dengue virus (DENV) and opportunistic fungal pathogens are rarely reported alongside human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). To our knowledge, no prior cases of DENV and Cryptococcus neoformans coinfection have been documented. This case highlights a novel presentation of concurrent DENV and cryptococcal meningoencephalitis in an immunocompromised host, reinforcing the importance of considering multiple etiologies in patients from tropical regions presenting with neurological symptoms. An Updated Review of the Invasive Aedes albopictus in the Americas; Geographical Distribution, Host Feeding Patterns, Arbovirus Infection, and the Potential for Vertical Transmission of Dengue Virus.

Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus is a mosquito native to Southeast Asia. Currently, it has a wide distribution in America, where natural infection with arboviruses of medical and veterinary importance has been reported. In spite of their importance in the transmission of endemic arbovirus, the basic information of parameters affecting their vectorial capacity is poorly investigated. The aim of the work was to update the distribution range of Ae. albopictus in the Americas, review the blood-feeding patterns, and compare the minimum infection rate (MIR) of the Dengue virus (DENV) between studies of

Variation in arbovirus infection rates in species of birds sampled in a serological survey during an encephalitis epidemic in the Murray Valley of South-eastern Australia, February 1974.

There was extensive and exuberant breeding of waterbirds before and during an epidemic of arboviral encephalitis in the Murray Valley of south eastern Australia in 1974. As estimated by haemagglutination inhibition tests on 432 bird sera collected between 4th and 13th February, 1974, infection with Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Kunjin virus and possibly other flaviviruses was concentrated in species of the Order Ciconiiformes (55% positive) and Pelecaniformes (41%), compared with only 5% in Anseriformes. Although Sindbis virus infections were also highest in these 2 Orders (56% and 46%, re
