Methane is the most important anthropogenic contribution to climate change after carbon dioxide and represents a loss of feed energy for the animal, mainly for herbivorous species. However, our knowledge about the ecology of Archaea, the microbial group responsible for methane synthesis in the gut, is very poor. Moreover, it is well known that hindgut fermentation differs from rumen fermentation. The composition of archaeal communities in fermentation compartments of goats and rabbits were investigated using DGGE to generate fingerprints of archaeal 16S rRNA gene. Ruminal contents and faeces f

Even if Archaea deliver important ecosystem services and are major players in global biogeochemical cycles, they remain poorly understood in freshwater ecosystems. To our knowledge, no studies specifically address the direct impact of xenobiotics on the riverine archaeome. Using environmental DNA metabarcoding of the 16S ribosomal gene, we previously demonstrated bacterial communities significant shifts linked to pollutant mixtures during an extreme flood in a typical Mediterranean coastal watercourse. Here, using the same methodology, we sought to determine whether archaeal community shifts c

The microbial community in eutrophic freshwater sediment was investigated from a 67-cm-deep sediment core collected from the Daechung Reservoir in South Korea, where cyanobacterial blooms have occurred annually for the past 30 years. The majority of core sediments were characterized by dark-grayish, fine-grained mud with abundant gas-escaped and thinly laminated layers. Intervals of summer and winter seasons were represented by periodic peaks of geochemical profiles of parameters such as grain size and relative carbon mass ratios to various nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Human microbiome studies remain focused on bacteria, as they comprise the dominant component of the microbiota. Recent advances in sequencing technology and optimization of amplicon sequencing protocols have allowed the description of other members of the microbiome, including eukaryotes (fungi) and, most recently, archaea. There are no known human-associated archaeal pathogens. Their diversity and contribution to health and chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), are unknown. Patients with CRS suffer from long-term sinus infections, and while the microbiota is hypo

Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) is a bioprocess utilizing methane as the electron source to remove nitrate or nitrite, but denitrification rate especially for nitrate-dependent DAMO is usually limited due to the low methane mass transfer efficiency. In this research, granular active carbon (GAC) was added to enhance the nitrate-dependent DAMO process. The results showed that the maximum nitrate removal rate of GAC assisted DAMO system reached as high as 61.17 mg L-1 d-1, 8 times higher than that of non-amended control SBR. The porous structure of GAC can not only adsorb methane

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) holds a ratification vote annually following the review of newly proposed taxa by ICTV Study Groups and members of the virology community. This article reports changes to the taxonomy of viruses infecting archaea that were approved and ratified by the ICTV in March 2025. Six new families of head-tailed viruses expanded the order Caudoviricetes (realm Duplodnaviria); one new family of filamentous viruses was added to the order Ligamenvirales (realm Adnaviria); one new family of viruses with pleomorphic virions was included within a new p

Early-life gut microbial colonization and development exert a profound impact on the health and metabolism of the host throughout the life span. The transmission of microbes from the mother to the offspring affects the succession and establishment of the early-life rumen microbiome in newborns, but the contributions of different maternal sites to the rumen microbial establishment remain unclear. In the present study, samples from different dam sites (namely, oral, rumen fluid, milk, and teat skin) and rumen fluid of yak calves were collected at 6 time points between d 7 and 180 postpartum to d

Archaea, one of the three domains of life, are increasingly recognized as consistent, though often underappreciated, members of the human microbiome, yet their roles in health and disease remain poorly understood. Unlike bacteria, no archaeal species have been conclusively identified as primary mammalian pathogens, but their widespread presence across diverse body sites suggests potential indirect contributions to host physiology and pathology. Current evidence is synthesized on archaeal diversity and habitat specificity across multiple human-associated sites, encompassing the gastrointestinal

Recent omics studies have provided invaluable insights into the metabolic potential, adaptation, and evolution of novel archaeal lineages from a variety of extreme environments. We utilized a genome-resolved metagenomic approach to recover eight medium- to high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) that likely represent a new order ("Candidatus Sysuiplasmatales") in the class Thermoplasmata from mine tailings and acid mine drainage (AMD) sediments sampled from two copper mines in South China. 16S rRNA gene-based analyses revealed a narrow habitat range for these uncultured archaea limite

Iron-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (Fe-AOM) is an important process to reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere. It is well known that iron bioavailability largely influences microbial iron reduction, but the long-term effects of different ferric irons on soil Fe-AOM remain unknown. In this work, paddy soil in the ferruginous zone was collected and inoculated with insoluble ferrihydrite and soluble EDTA-Fe(III) for 420 days. Stable isotope experiments, activity inhibition tests, and molecular biological techniques were performed to reveal the activity, microbial community, and p

Determining the precise limits of life in polyextreme environments is challenging. Studies along gradients of polyextreme conditions in the Dallol proto-volcano area (Danakil salt desert, Ethiopia) showed the occurrence of archaea-dominated communities (up to 99%) in several hypersaline systems but strongly suggested that life did not thrive in the hyperacidic (pH ∼0), hypersaline (∼35% [wt/vol],) and sometimes hot (up to 108°C) ponds of the Dallol dome. However, it was recently claimed that archaea flourish in these brines based on the detection of one Nanohaloarchaeotas 16S rRNA gene and flu

The origin of microbial mercury methylation has long been a mystery. Here, we employed genome-resolved phylogenetic analyses to decipher the evolution of the mercury-methylating gene, hgcAB, constrain the ancestral origin of the hgc operon, and explain the distribution of hgc in Bacteria and Archaea. We infer the extent to which vertical inheritance and horizontal gene transfer have influenced the evolution of mercury methylators and hypothesize that evolution of this trait bestowed the ability to produce an antimicrobial compound (MeHg+) on a potentially resource-limited early Earth. We specu

Archaea possess a remarkably diverse mobilome, but for many archaeal viruses and plasmids, even the basic processes, such as genome replication, remain poorly understood. Here, we characterize a previously uncharacterized family of putative rolling-circle replication endonucleases, termed Rep-Arvir, widespread among viruses and plasmids associated with phylogenetically diverse archaea, including halophiles, methanogens, and hyperthermophiles. We show that RepSNJ2, encoded by the temperate pleomorphic virus SNJ2, a model member of the Pleolipoviridae family, is essential for driving autonomous

The endosymbiosis theory of the origin of eukaryotic cell was first proposed more than a hundred years ago. In the second half of the 20th century, Lynn Margulis suggested a new interpretation of the origin of the nucleus in modern eukaryotes. The background was the study of the consortium "Thiodendron", a symbiotic bacterial community, which includes anaerobic aerotolerant motile spirochaetes and sulfidogenic bacteria (sulfidogens) of vibrioid form with a fermentation type of metabolism. Spirochaetes supply sulfidogens with metabolites (pyruvate and, probably, organic nitrogenous products of

Hemes are iron-containing porphyrin compounds that play a crucial role in a wide array of biological processes. Heme a synthase (HAS) is a crucial enzyme that facilitates the biosynthesis of heme a, an essential heme variant that serves as a cofactor in heme-copper terminal oxidases and in some acidophilic archaea's quinol reductases, such as the ba complex. Depending on the length and presence or absence of cysteine residues in the periplasmic loop(s), HAS has been classified into different types. Our manuscript presents a large-scale analysis of the distribution and evolution of HAS in Archa

Halophilic archaea are a unique group of microorganisms that thrive in high-salt environments, exhibiting remarkable adaptations to survive extreme conditions. Archaeological wood and El-Hamra Lake serve as a substrate for a diverse range of microorganisms, including archaea, although the exact role of archaea in archaeological wood biodeterioration remains unclear. The morphological and chemical characterizations of archaeological wood were evaluated using FTIR, SEM, and EDX. The degradation of polysaccharides was identified in Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR). The degradation of wo

One of the most significant events in the evolution of life is the origin of the eukaryotic cell. Despite recent advances, the driving forces behind the emergence of complex eukaryotic attributes remain a gap in our knowledge. One model proposes that eukaryotic cells evolved via symbiosis between sulfate-reducing bacteria and hydrogen-producing archaea in ancient microbial mats. Here, we describe a highly enriched (89%) culture of a novel Asgard archaeon, Nerearchaeum marumarumayae, along with a bacterium Stromatodesulfovibrio nilemahensis from a modern microbial mat. The N. marumarumayae geno
