Comparative Analysis of Sectional Anatomy, Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance of the Cadaveric Six-Banded Armadillo (Euphractus sexcintus) Head.

In this research, we examined the head of the six-banded armadillo (Euphractus sexcintus) using advanced imaging techniques, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and correlated these findings with the anatomical cross sections. For this, we analyzed three adult specimens. By integrating imaging data with anatomical cross-sections, we present a detailed description of the structures that constitute the head of this species, highlighting its most distinctive features. Therefore, a well-developed tympanic cavity was observed. The masticatory muscles, including the tempora

Comparative anatomy of the paratympanic organ (vitali organ) in the middle ear of birds and non-avian vertebrates: focus on alligators, parakeets and armadillos.

The paratympanic organ (PTO) in the middle ear has been described in numerous bird species, but little is known about the distribution of this presumed lateral line remnant in other vertebrate classes. Here we provide evidence for a PTO in juvenile alligators, and make the first detailed description of its location and relation to ligaments in the reptilian middle ear. The alligator PTO measures about 450 micro m in diameter. The alligator PTO contains hair cells whose cilia extend into a mucous substance within the lumen. The PTO connects though a ligament to the ear drum, suggesting that pre

The armadillo-repeat containing X-linked protein 3, ARMCX3, is a negative regulator of the browning of adipose tissue associated with obesity.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the role of armadillo repeat-containing X-linked protein 3 (ARMCX3) in the thermogenic plasticity of adipose tissue. METHODS: Adipose tissues were characterized in Armcx3-KO male mice. Armcx3 gene expression was analyzed in adipose tissue from mice exposed to thermogenic inducers (cold, β3-adenergic stimulus) and in differentiating brown and beige cells in culture. Analyses encompassed circulating metabolite and hormonal profiling, tissue characterization, histology, gene expression patterns, and immunoblot assays. Armcx3 gene expression was assessed in subcutaneous a

HYPERVITAMINOSIS D IN A GIANT ANTEATER (MYRMECOPHAGA TRIDACTYLA) AND A LARGE HAIRY ARMADILLO (CHAETOPHRACTUS VILLOSUS) RECEIVING A COMMERCIAL INSECTIVORE DIET.

Hypervitaminosis D was diagnosed in a giant anteater (Myromecophaga tridactyla) and a large hairy armadillo (Chaetophractus villosus) being fed a commercial insectivore diet. Clinical findings included weight loss, reduced appetite, vomiting, and suspected abdominal discomfort. Hypercalcemia (3.68 and 2.04 mmol/L total and ionized calcium, respectively) was detected in the anteater, and plasma 25(OH)D levels were measured and found to be 808.7 and 379.4 nmol/L for the anteater and armadillo, respectively. Dietary change resulted in a reduction of 25(OH)D levels in both animals and resolution o

Mesenchymal stem cells inhibit mitochondrial fission by upregulating armadillo repeat containing 1, ameliorating oxidative stress in renal fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress damage is the important mechanism that promotes the process of fibrosis. Whether mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) regulate mitochondrial dynamics and oxidative stress via armadillo repeat containing 1 (ARMC1) in renal fibrosis? METHODS: Using proteomics analysis, compare the significant differences in renal tissue proteins before and after MSCs intervention in adenine-induced nephropathy. Using a lentiviral vector to overexpress the ARMC1 gene in HK-2 cells, with the empty vector as a control. MSCs conditioned media (MSCs-CM) was applied to TGF-β1 treated cells, and

Plasmodium falciparum Merozoite Associated Armadillo Protein (PfMAAP) Is Apically Localized in Free Merozoites and Antibodies Are Associated With Reduced Risk of Malaria.

Understanding the functional role of proteins expressed by Plasmodium falciparum is an important step toward unlocking potential targets for the development of therapeutic or diagnostic interventions. The armadillo (ARM) repeat protein superfamily is associated with varied functions across the eukaryotes. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of members of this protein family in Plasmodium biology. The Plasmodium falciparum armadillo repeats only (PfARO; Pf3D7_0414900) and P. falciparum merozoite organizing proteins (PfMOP; Pf3D7_0917000) are armadillo-repeat containing proteins pr

Early Experience With the Dual-Mode Radial-Access Catheter Armadillo in Neuroendovascular Procedures via the Radial Approach: A Multicenter Study of 71 Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The transradial approach is increasingly being adopted by neurointerventionalists after several studies showed its safety, efficacy, and patient satisfaction. However, the use of non-radial-specific devices for transradial procedures is a major barrier for transradial adoption. In this study, we aim to demonstrate the efficacy, technical feasibility, and safety of the Armadillo dual-mode guide catheter (Q'Apel Medical Inc.) as a radial-specific catheter in various neurovascular pathologies. METHODS: This is a multicenter retrospective study of 71 patients who underw

Anatomy of Shoulder Girdle Muscle Modifications and Walking Adaptation in the Scaly Chinese Pangolin (Manis Pentadactyla Pentadactyla: Pholidota) Compared with the Partially Osteoderm-Clad Armadillos (Dasypodidae).

Because pangolins are unique mammals with a body and limbs almost entirely sheathed in hard keratinous overlapping scales and with digging and climbing abilities, the shoulder girdle muscles may differ significantly from those of other mammals including the partially osteoderm-clad armadillos. Therefore, we conducted a functional anatomical study of the shoulder girdle muscles in Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla, Pholidota) and some armadillo species (Dasypodidae). Our CT scans revealed that the pangolin's overlapping scales are hard structures completely encasing the limbs.

Correlation between Cross-Sectional Anatomy and Computed Tomography of the Normal Six-Banded Armadillo (Euphractus sexcintus) Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses.

This research aimed to study the rostral part of the head of the six-banded armadillo, applying advanced imaging techniques such as CT. Furthermore, by combining the images obtained through this technique with anatomical cross-sections, an adequate description of the structures that constitute the rostral part of the head of this species is presented. This anatomical information could provide a valuable diagnostic tool for the clinical evaluation of different disorders in the six-banded armadillo's nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

The mycobacterial secreted antigen 85 complex possesses epitopes that are differentially expressed in human leprosy lesions and Mycobacterium leprae-infected armadillo tissues.

The granulomatous skin lesions in leprosy are thought to be initiated by the immune response to certain antigens of the causative agent, Mycobacterium leprae. The antigen 85 complex is one of the major targets in the immune response to M. leprae infection. In the present study, a panel of previously characterized monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) (3A8, Rb2, A4g4, A2h11, Pe12, and A3c12) reacting with different epitopes of the 85 complex proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. leprae was employed in a comparative immunohistological analysis to demonstrate the in situ expression of 85 complex a

Effects of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on intestinal parasites in a subpopulation of screaming hairy armadillo, Chaetophractus vellerosus (Xenarthra: Chlamyphoridae) from Central-Eastern Argentina.

Environmental stressors, host condition, and parasitic infections are closely linked, as adverse conditions may compromise individual health and increase susceptibility to parasitism. This study evaluated the influence of intrinsic (body condition) and extrinsic host factors (farm, mining activity, cattle load, and dog abundance) on prevalence and parasite load in the Endangered subpopulation of Chaetophractus vellerosus from eastern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Fecal samples from 45 individuals were analyzed using coproparasitological techniques, including modified Ritchie sedimentation

PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PRA) of Mycobacterium leprae from human lepromas and from a natural case of an armadillo of Corrientes, Argentina.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PRA) which relies on the amplification of a 439-bp portion of the hsp65 gene present in all mycobacteria, followed by two distinct digestions (with BstEII and HaeIII) of the PCR product, offers a rapid and easy alternative that allows identification of the species without the need for specialized equipment. Wild leprosy in the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is characterized by the presence of multiple bacilli in internal organs such as lymph nodes, spleen and liver, as well as in nerves and skin. Burkholderia pseudomallei-induced expression of a negative regulator, sterile-alpha and Armadillo motif-containing protein, in mouse macrophages: a possible mechanism for suppression of the MyD88-independent pathway.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a causative agent of melioidosis, is a Gram-negative facultative intracellular bacterium that can survive and multiply in macrophages. Previously, we demonstrated that B. pseudomallei failed to activate gene expression downstream of the MyD88-independent pathway, particularly the expression of beta interferon (IFN-β) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), leading to the inability of macrophages to kill this bacterium. In the present report, we extended our study to show that B. pseudomallei was able to activate sterile-α and Armadillo motif (SARM)-containing pro

Comparative study of the 48-hour response to soluble antigens obtained from human and armadillo leprosy material in lepromatous leprosy patients and normal persons, contacts of leprosy patients.

We prepared antigens by precipitating with 80% ammonium sulfate supernatants of human and armadillo antigen at a concentration of 160 X 10(6) bacteria per ml. The precipitate was resuspended, dialyzed and filtered. The antigen obtained was inactivated with trypsin during 30 minutes. The tests made with these antigens were negative for the 48-hour test in lepromatous patients and highly positive in normal persons who were contacts of leprosy patients.

Sterile-α- and armadillo motif-containing protein inhibits the TRIF-dependent downregulation of signal regulatory protein α to interfere with intracellular bacterial elimination in Burkholderia pseudomallei-infected mouse macrophages.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, evades macrophage killing by suppressing the TRIF-dependent pathway, leading to inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. We previously demonstrated that virulent wild-type B. pseudomallei inhibits the TRIF-dependent pathway by upregulating sterile-α- and armadillo motif-containing protein (SARM) and by inhibiting downregulation of signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα); both molecules are negative regulators of Toll-like receptor signaling. In contrast, the less virulent lipopolysaccharide (LPS) mutant of B. ps
