Exposure to antenatal corticosteroids and reduced respiratory sinus arrhythmia in adult survivors of extremely low birth weight.

Purpose/aim: Antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) therapy has dramatically increased survival rates among extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. However, the long-term effects of ACS on autonomic nervous system function have not been explored. Using the world's oldest longitudinally followed cohort of ELBW infants we compared respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) among ELBW survivors whose mothers received ACS (ELBW-S), those who did not (ELBW-NS) and normal birth weight (NBW) controls in their 20 and 30 s. Methods: Resting electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded from ELBW-S (n = 28), ELBW-NS (n = 36)

Central regulation of heart rate and the appearance of respiratory sinus arrhythmia: new insights from mathematical modeling.

A minimal model for the neural control of heart rate (HR) has been developed with the aim of better understanding respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA)--a modulation of HR at the frequency of breathing. This model consists of two differential equations and is integrated into a previously-published model of gas exchange. The heart period is assumed to be affected primarily by the parasympathetic signal, with the sympathetic signal taken as a parameter in the model. We include the baroreflex, mechanical stretch-receptor feedback from the lungs, and central modulation of the cardiac vagal tone by th

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia during anaesthesia: assessment of respiration related beat-to-beat heart rate variability analysis methods.

Beat-to-beat heart rate variability analysis is a powerful tool for the diagnosis of neuropathy. Respiration-related heart rate variability (respiratory sinus arrhythmia, RSA) reflects the function of parasympathetic nervous system during spontaneous ventilation while awake. RSA is also claimed to monitor the depth of anaesthesia. Power spectrum analysis or various averaging techniques of the heart rate variability are usually applied. The current literature, however, does not usually interpret the ground rules and limitations of the method used, and this may sometimes lead to erroneous conclu

Cycle length variation assists in differentiation of atrial, ventricular, and sinus arrhythmias in horses at rest.

OBJECTIVE: Criteria for arrhythmia classification in horses are insufficient, particularly when differentiating atrial premature complexes (APCs) from sinus arrhythmia (SA). This study investigated RR and PP interval changes between SA, APCs, and ventricular premature complexes (VPCs). METHODS: 30 resting ECGs were reviewed: 10 each containing SA, APC, and VPC. Sequences of 10 RR and PP intervals were recorded for each arrhythmia (20 events/ECG). Percent RR and PP deviations were calculated (1) between sequential intervals (%ΔSEQPP and %ΔSEQRR, respectively) and (2) compared to averaged basel

Echocardiographic characteristics of coronary sinus in patients with arrhythmia and in healthy controls: a single-center clinical study.

BACKGROUND: The coronary sinus (CS) is an anatomical structure that is often targeted in cardiac intervention. Different CS forms may be related to the occurrence of various arrhythmias. This study primarily analyzed whether there are differences in the CS between healthy participants and patients with common arrhythmia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the relevant information of patients diagnosed with arrhythmia via electrocardiography and that of healthy controls in whom arrhythmia was excluded via electrocardiography in Shandong Provincial Hospital from June 2024 to May 2025 was c

Conserved Role of the Large Conductance Calcium-Activated Potassium Channel, KCa1.1, in Sinus Node Function and Arrhythmia Risk.

BACKGROUND: KCNMA1 encodes the α-subunit of the large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel, KCa1.1, and lies within a linkage interval for atrial fibrillation (AF). Insights into the cardiac functions of KCa1.1 are limited, and KCNMA1 has not been investigated as an AF candidate gene. METHODS: The KCNMA1 gene was sequenced in 118 patients with familial AF. The role of KCa1.1 in normal cardiac structure and function was evaluated in humans, mice, zebrafish, and fly. A novel KCNMA1 variant was functionally characterized. RESULTS: A complex KCNMA1 variant was identified in 1 kindred with AF. T

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia is a major component of heart rate variability in undisturbed, remotely monitored rattlesnakes, Crotalus durissus.

ECG recordings were obtained using an implanted telemetry device from the South American rattlesnake, Crotalus durissus, held under stable conditions without restraining cables or interaction with researchers. Mean heart rate (fH) recovered rapidly (<24 h) from anaesthesia and operative procedures. This preceded a more gradual development of heart rate variability (HRV), with instantaneous fH increasing during each lung ventilation cycle. Atropine injection increased mean fH and abolished HRV. Complete autonomic blockade revealed a cholinergic tonus on the heart of 55% and an adrenergic tonus

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and tympanic membrane compliance predict spontaneous eye gaze behaviors in young children: a pilot study.

The Polyvagal theory proposes the Social Engagement System as a theoretical model linking social behavior with the neural regulation of the heart (via the vagus) and the striated muscles of the face and head (via special visceral efferent pathways). The current pilot study tested the feasibility of this model with typically developing 3-5-year-old children by evaluating the relation between spontaneous social engagement behavior measured by eye gaze behaviors and the visceromotor (e.g., respiratory sinus arrhythmia) and somatomotor (e.g., right tympanic membrane compliance) components of the S

The Quadratic Association Between Resting Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia and Adolescents' Prosociality: The Moderating Role of Parental Marital Conflict.

Although both vagal regulation and parental marital conflict have been demonstrated to influence individuals' prosociality, research on their interactive influences is almost silent, especially in adolescents. The present study examined the potential quadratic association between resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and adolescents' prosociality and the moderating role of parental marital conflict in this association. Three hundred and twenty-seven junior high school students (Mage = 13.24 years, SD = 0.47, 45.3% female) participated in this study. The Agreeableness Subscale from the NEO

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and heart period in infancy as correlates of later oppositional defiant and callous-unemotional behaviors.

Extant literature suggests that oppositional defiant (ODD) and callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors in childhood and adolescence are associated with distinct patterns of psychophysiological functioning and that individual differences in these patterns have implications for developmental pathways to disorder. Very little is known about the associations between psychophysiological functioning in infancy and later ODD and CU behaviors. This study examined associations between basal autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning in infancy and ODD and CU behaviors in later childhood. Using longitudinal

Does respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) predict anxiety reduction during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD)?

Modifying dysfunctional emotion regulation is an important goal in psychological treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Antecedent-focused strategies learned in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), such as cognitive reappraisal, have proven more effective in reducing social anxiety than response-focused strategies, such as expressive suppression. Still, not all patients with SAD respond well to CBT. Medications and physiological factors may also influence the clinical response. The purpose of the present study was to examine the role that these factors play in determining treatment respo

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia during feeding: a measure of vagal regulation of metabolism, ingestion, and digestion in preterm infants.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a non-invasive indicator of vagal regulation of the heart, and heart period (HP) were monitored before, during, and after oral or gastric-tube bolus feedings in 32 preterm infants. Group 1 infants (n=15) were < or =30 weeks gestational age (GA) at birth (mean 28.3 weeks) and group 2 infants (n=17) were > or =31 weeks GA at birth (mean=33.2 weeks). Mean postmenstrual ages at the time of study were 33.5 +/- 2.3 (SD) weeks in group 1 and 33.9 +/- 1.6 (SD) weeks in group 2. RSA and HP decreased in both groups during feeding. However, postfeeding RSA and HP incre

Smartwatch-based detection of cardiac arrhythmias: Beyond the differentiation between sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation.

Within the span of a few years, watches have functionally morphed from objects that tell time to wearable minicomputers that allow real-time recording of electrocardiograms (ECGs). Considerable information can be deduced from these single lead tracings, and it is now not uncommon to see patients in whom diagnostic tracings of clinically relevant but elusive arrhythmias are captured using a smartwatch. Empowering individuals to record their own ECG tracings in scenarios such as palpitations, syncope, and for risk stratification of sudden death intuitively has considerable potential, but its val

The feasibility and safety of a simple method for coronary sinus blood sampling during catheter ablation of arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND: Coronary sinus (CS) blood sampling gives an insight into the localized pathophysiology of heart diseases. However, additional specifically-designed or modified catheters were needed in most previous studies, making the convenience of clinical application unsatisfactory. This study aimed to introduce a simple method for CS blood sampling without using additional catheters during catheter ablation (CA) of arrhythmias, and to investigate its feasibility and safety. METHODS: A total of 119 patients undergoing CA were prospectively enrolled, including 25 with paroxysmal supraventricula

Endocardial catheter mapping in patients in sinus rhythm: relationship to underlying heart disease and ventricular arrhythmias.

Catheter mapping during sinus rhythm was performed in 132 patients with coronary artery disease and 26 patients with congestive noncoronary cardiomyopathy. Each of the patients had a clinical history of one of the following: no ventricular arrhythmia, nonsustained ventricular tachycardia, cardiac arrest, or sustained ventricular tachycardia. The characteristics of the endocardial electrogram and other measured indexes of slow endocardial conduction were compared between patients with different types of disease and in different arrhythmia groups to determine if differences existed. The cardiomy
