Brazilian Cerrado soil Actinobacteria ecology.

A total of 2152 Actinobacteria strains were isolated from native Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) soils located in Passos, Luminárias, and Arcos municipalities (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The soils were characterised for chemical and microbiological analysis. The microbial analysis led to the identification of nine genera (Streptomyces, Arthrobacter, Rhodococcus, Amycolatopsis, Microbacterium, Frankia, Leifsonia, Nakamurella, and Kitasatospora) and 92 distinct species in both seasons studied (rainy and dry). The rainy season produced a high microbial population of all the aforementioned genera.

Interaction of N-acetyl-4-epi-D-neuraminic acid with key enzymes of sialic acid metabolism.

In spite of the axially orientated hydroxy group at C-4, the benzyl alpha-glycoside of N-acetyl-4-epi-D-neuraminic acid (4-epi-NeuAc) is a substrate for sialidases from Vibrio cholerae, Clostridium perfringens, and Arthrobacter ureafaciens, although to an extent which differs depending on the enzyme. Surprisingly, V. cholerae sialidase is by far the slowest acting enzyme; this is in contrast to its usual behavior. Fowl plague virus sialidase and bovine testis sialidase also cleave this glycoside slowly. 4-Epi-NeuAc is not a substrate for N-acetylneuraminic acid aldolase from C. perfringens but

Biofilm enhanced the mitigations of antibiotics and resistome in sulfadiazine and trimethoprim co-contaminated soils.

Reducing antibiotic levels in soil ecosystems is vital to curb the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and mitigate global health threats. However, gaps persist in understanding how antibiotic resistome can be suppressed during antibiotic degradation. Herein, we investigate the efficacy of a biochar biofilm incorporating antibiotics-degrading bacterial strain (Arthrobacter sp. D2) to mitigate antibiotic resistome in non-manured and manure-amended soils with sulfadiazine (SDZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) contamination. Results show that biofilm enhanced SDZ degradation by 83.0% wi

Analysis of the bacterial surface ripening flora of German and French smeared cheeses with respect to their anti-listerial potential.

The anti-listerial potential of 19 different French smeared cheese bacterial consortia was analyzed semi-quantitatively. Comparison of the total viable cell count to the direct microscopic count yielded no indication that non-culturable bacteria contribute significantly to the undefined, complex ripening floras. From 2613 isolates, 48 showed clear inhibition of one or more Listeria monocytogenes strains on solid medium, while only three isolates excreted an anti-listerial, soluble substance when grown in liquid culture. From a total of 299 strains isolated from German dairy products, 30 strain

Insights into bioaerosol contamination in the process of mineralized refuse mining: Microbial aerosolization behavior and potential pathogenicity.

The landfill mining process is a main source of anthropogenic bioaerosol release, posing potential risks to the health of occupationally exposed personnel and nearby residents. In this study, microbial aerosolization behavior and potential pathogenicity during the landfill mining process were systematically investigated. The highest concentration of bacterial aerosols was measured in the refuse mining area, with a value of 5968 ± 1608 CFU/m3, while the highest concentration of fungal aerosols was 1196 ± 370 CFU/m3 in the refuse screening area. The bacterial and fungal aerosols were distributed

Bile reflux alters the profile of the gastric mucosa microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Bile reflux can cause inflammation, gastric mucosa atrophy, and diseases such as stomach cancer. Alkaline bile flowing back into the stomach affects the intragastric environment and can alter the gastric bacterial community. We sought to identify the characteristics of the stomach mucosal microbiota in patients with bile reflux. METHODS: Gastric mucosal samples were collected from 52 and 40 chronic gastritis patients with and without bile reflux, respectively. The bacterial profile was determined using 16S rRNA gene analysis. RESULTS: In the absence of H. pylori infection, the ri

ERIC-PCR-based strain-specific detection of phenol-degrading bacteria in activated sludge of wastewater treatment systems.

AIMS: To evaluate the use of Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus PCR (ERIC-PCR)-derived probes and primers to specifically detect bacterial strains in an activated sludge microbial community. METHODS AND RESULTS: ERIC-PCR was performed on two phenol-degrading bacterial strains, Arthrobacter nicotianae P1-7 and Klebsiella sp. P8-14. Their amplicons were DIG labelled for use as probes and then hybridized with ERIC-PCR fingerprints. The results showed the distinct band patterns for both bacterial strains. Strain-specific PCR primers were designed based on the sequences of ERIC-PCR ba

Iron-chelating hydroxamic acid (schizokinen) active in initiation of cell division in Bacillus megaterium.

Bacillus megaterium ATCC 19213 secretes a cell division-initiating "schizokinen" (SK) which accumulates during its culture cycle to a concentration inversely proportional to the iron added to a sucrose-mineral salts medium. Secreted SK was purified from culture filtrates as a red Fe (III) chelate, and a fraction with similar biological properties was obtained from whole cells. Infrared spectra of SK, and analyses of unhydrolyzed and acid-hydrolyzed preparations indicated it to be a secondary hydroxamate; visible absorption maxima of the ferric complex showed pH dependency typical of ferric mon

Metagenomic insight into the horizontal transfer mechanism of fluoroquinolone antibiotic resistance genes mediated by mobile genetic element in microalgae-bacteria consortia.

Antibiotics could accumulate in the environment with the discharge of wastewater from families, hospitals and livestock farms, which intensifies the spread of resistance genes around the world. Although microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) can efficiently remove antibiotics, the horizontal transfer mechanism of antibiotics resistance genes in MBC is still rarely reported. In this study, the removal efficiency of ofloxacin, norfloxacin and enrofloxacin by MBC under different antibiotic concentrations was investigated, while resistance genes in the MBC were identified and the mechanism of horizon

Novel insights into the metabolic pathway of iprodione by soil bacteria.

Microbial degradation constitutes the key soil dissipation process for iprodione. We recently isolated a consortium, composed of an Arthrobacter sp. strain C1 and an Achromobacter sp. strain C2, that was able to convert iprodione to 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA). However, the formation of metabolic intermediates and the role of the strains on iprodione metabolism remain unknown. We examined the degradation of iprodione and its suspected metabolic intermediates, 3,5-dichlorophenyl-carboxamide (metabolite I) and 3,5-dichlorophenylurea-acetate (metabolite II), by strains C1 and C2 and their combi

Falsarthrobacter nasiphocae periprosthetic joint infection.

We report the isolation of a rare Gram-positive coccobacillary bacterium from synovial fluids of a patient with periprosthetic joint infection on three occasions over an 8-month period. As routine microbiological methods were not able to identify the isolate definitely, sequence analyses of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene and whole genome were performed. Analysis of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene showed the highest similarity (98.1%) with that of Falsarthrobacter (previously known as Arthrobacter) nasiphocae, which was first isolated from the nasal cavities of common seals (Phoca vi

The response of soil and phyllosphere microbial communities to repeated application of the fungicide iprodione: accelerated biodegradation or toxicity?

Pesticides interact with microorganisms in various ways with the outcome being negative or positive for the soil microbiota. Pesticides' effects on soil microorganisms have been studied extensively in soil but not in other pesticides-exposed microbial habitats like the phyllosphere. We tested the hypothesis that soil and phyllosphere support distinct microbial communities, but exhibit a similar response (accelerated biodegradation or toxicity) to repeated exposure to the fungicide iprodione. Pepper plants received four repeated foliage or soil applications of iprodione, which accelerated its d

Differences in gut microbiota composition in finishing Landrace pigs with low and high feed conversion ratios.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the microbial communities in the gut and feces from female finishing Landrace pigs with high and low feed conversion ratio (FCR) by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Many potential biomarkers can distinguish between high and low FCR groups in the duodenum, ileum, cecum, colon, and rectum, according to linear discriminant analysis effect sizes. The relative abundance of microbes were tested by Mann-Whitney test between the high and low FCR groups in different organs: Campylobacter, Prevotella and Sphaerochaeta were different in the duodenum (P < 0.05); Sa

Purification, gene cloning, and characterization of a novel halohydrin dehalogenase from Agromyces mediolanus ZJB120203.

A novel halohydrin dehalogenase (HHDH), catalyzing the transformation of 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) to epichlorohydrin (ECH), was purified from Agromyces mediolanus ZJB120203. The molecular mass of the enzyme was estimated to be 28 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). A 735-bp nucleotide fragment was obtained based on the N-terminal and internal amino acid sequences of the purified HHDH. The gene codes a protein sequence with 244 amino acid residues, and the protein sequence shows high similarity to Hhe AAD2 (HHDH from Arthrobacter sp. AD2), defin

Whipple's disease, familial Mediterranean fever, adult-onset Still's disease, and enteropathic arthritis.

Whipple's disease is a rare multisystem disorder of infectious etiology. Efforts to culture the responsible organism have been unsuccessful. Nucleotide sequencing and amplification of bacterial 16S ribosomal DNA revealed the organism to be most similar to bacteria of the Rhodococcus, Streptomyces, and Arthrobacter genera. Several clinical studies of the long-term use of colchicine for the treatment of familial Mediterranean fever demonstrate its utility for symptom control and prevention of complications by amyloidosis in both adults and children. Molecular identification, antibiotic susceptibility, and biofilm formation of airborne bacteria.

Pathogenic bacterial communities present in urban green spaces significantly affect human health, particularly for immunocompromised populations. The diverse range of pathogenic bacteria found in these areas poses substantial management challenges because of their high prevalence of antibiotic resistance, which can be life-threatening, particularly for immunocompromised individuals, including older adults and children. This study identified airborne bacterial species from 14 natural parks in the Hail region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Bacterial colonies isolated on blood agar plates were p

Rhizosphere Microbiota and Soil Nutrients Shape Fruit Lignan Composition of Schisandra chinensis Across Temperate Cultivation Sites in Northeast and Northwest China.

Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. (S. chinensis) is a widely used medicinal plant whose therapeutic efficacy is closely linked to its lignan content. While previous studies have focused on soil fertility and cultivar variation, the interplay among soil nutrients, rhizosphere microbiota, and lignan accumulation remains poorly understood. This study investigated S. chinensis grown across 20 cultivation sites to elucidate the relationships among soil nutrient profiles, fruit lignan composition, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Six major lignans were quantified using HPLC, soil nutrients
