PURPOSE: Although articulatory impairment represents distinct speech characteristics in most neurological diseases affecting movement, methods allowing automated assessments of articulation deficits from the connected speech are scarce. This study aimed to design a fully automated method for analyzing dysarthria-related vowel articulation impairment and estimate its sensitivity in a broad range of neurological diseases and various types and severities of dysarthria.
METHOD: Unconstrained monologue and reading passages were acquired from 459 speakers, including 306 healthy controls and 153 neu

AIM: Ankyloglossia is a common congenital malformation characterized by a short, thick, or tight tongue frenulum, and its effect on speech articulation remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate (a) the association between ankyloglossia and speech disorders, and (b) the effectiveness of surgical interventions on the articulation of patients with ankyloglossia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed was conducted. Randomized control trials (RCTs), cohort studies, case-control studies, and case series with more than five cases were included.
RESULT: Of the 16 included

Outcomes of mandibular fractures were stated as frequent reason of temporomandibular joint dysfunctions. The objective of this study was to evaluate dynamical changes of occlusion and articulation during treatment of mandibular angle fractures. 12 subjects with mandibular angle fractures underwent analysis of occlusion and articulation in all stages of healing. Findings of investigations were presented in Posselt's and intercondylar axis diagrams, occlusiograms and relative force vs. time graphs. Comparison of results in first day, 1, 3 and 6 months after trauma showed that despite typical pro

Although motor training programs have been applied to childhood apraxia of speech (AOS), the neural mechanisms of articulation learning are not well understood. To this aim, we recorded cerebral hemodynamic activity in the left hemisphere of healthy subjects (n = 15) during articulation learning. We used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) while articulated voices were recorded and analyzed using spectrograms. The study consisted of two experimental sessions (modified and control sessions) in which participants were asked to repeat the articulation of the syllables "i-chi-ni" with and without an

Disorders of speech are a common and sometimes even the first symptom of parkinsonism. The various features of parkinsonian speech disorder include repetitive phenomena, disturbances of respiration, dysphonia, and impairment of articulation. This review aims at summarizing the neurological, phoniatric, and phonetical data regarding symptomatology, pathophysiology, and therapy of parkinsonian dysarthrophonia.

This report describes an unusual presentation of a voice disorder arising from inability to coordinate the three components of motor speech: respiration, phonation, and articulation. These systems were individually intact, as demonstrated by laryngoscopy, motor speech examination, and treatment methods achieving success under controlled conditions. Following initial programming of his deep brain stimulation (DBS) device, a 62-year-old male, diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) 14 years previously, abruptly experienced a vocal disorder characterized by pressed, very low frequency creaky voic

Most speech disorders of childhood are treated with speech therapy. However, two conditions, ankyloglossia and velopharyngeal dysfunction, may be amenable to surgical intervention. It is important for surgeons to work with experienced speech language pathologists to diagnose the speech disorder. Children with articulation disorders related to ankyloglossia may benefit from frenuloplasty. Children with velopharyngeal dysfunction should have standardized clinical evaluation and instrumental asseessment of velopharyngeal function. Surgeons should develop a treatment protocol to optimize speech ou

PURPOSE: This study aimed to (a) develop preliminary reference data for the Mandarin Articulation and Phonological Test (MAPT) and (b) examine its reliability and validity for assessing speech abilities in Mandarin-speaking preschool children aged 3-6 years. The study responded to the need for speech assessment tools with systematic psychometric documentation in Mandarin, where standardized instruments with comprehensive scoring systems remain limited.
METHOD: Participants included 148 typically developing children (ages 3;0-6;11 [years;months]) and 76 children with speech sound disorders rec

OBJECTIVE: The success of cleft palate surgery is specifically determined by the subsequent speech characteristics. There are several types of surgical techniques to repair the palate. The surgeon chooses his or her own technique according to the principles (s)he have established based on experience. The main purpose of this study is to determine and to compare the long-term speech outcome (18 years after surgery) regarding overall intelligibility, articulation, resonance, and voice after one-stage Wardill-Kilner palatoplasty or two-stage Furlow palatoplasty. The authors hypothesized that a de

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to determine whether ankyloglossia is associated with articulation problems and the effect of frenuloplasty on speech and tongue mobility.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a prospective study of 30 children aged 1 to 12 years with ankyloglossia undergoing frenuloplasty. Outcomes were assessed by measurements of tongue mobility, speech evaluation, and parent questionnaires.
RESULTS: Mean tongue protrusion improved from 14.2 mm preoperatively to 25.8 mm postoperatively (P < 0.01). Similarly, mean tongue elevation improved from 5.2 to 22 mm (P < 0.01). Preoperative speech patholo

In this report, we described clinical outcomes of a multi-stage surgery integrating multiple techniques in restoration of facial morphology and function of a 17-year-old boy with severe gunshot injuries. This multi-stage surgery was applied in treatment of one rare case of gunshot-caused complicated facial deformities involving most parts of the face (labrum, left nose wing, nasal columella, nasal septum, maxillary alveolar process, hard palate, soft palate, bilateral maxillary bones, left zygoma, suborbital bone defects) and clinical efficacy upon restoring facial form and function were retro

The main purpose of this study is to determine the impact (one and a half year after implantation) of a single-tooth implant on articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour. This information is important for dentists, orthodontists or stomatologists who treat professional speakers. Objective (acoustic analysis) as well as subjective (questionnaire, phonetic inventory, phonetic analysis, oromyofunctional assessment of lip and tongue function, blowing, sucking and swallowing) assessment techniques were used to determine the quality of life, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour. Articulation is driven by various combinations of movements of the lip, tongue, soft palate, pharynx and larynx, where the tongue plays an especially important role. In patients with cerebrovascular disorder, lingual motor function is often affected, causing dysarthria. We aimed to evaluate the effect of visual biofeedback of posterior tongue movement on articulation rehabilitation in dysarthria patients with cerebrovascular disorder. Fifteen dysarthria patients (10 men and 5 women; mean age, 70.7 ± 10.3 years) agreed to participate in this study. A device for measuring the movement of the pos

BACKGROUND: Children with phonological problems are a significant proportion of many therapists' caseloads. However, little is known about current clinical practice with these children or whether research on the effects of therapy have influenced this practice.
AIMS: To investigate the methods of assessment and remediation used by therapists working in the UK.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A questionnaire was sent to therapists working with pre- and primary school-aged children.
OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Ninety-eight clinicians of varying experience responded. Most used the South Tyneside Assessment of P

Vowel misarticulations have received very little attention in our literature. The author suggests that although vowel errors occur less frequently than consonant errors, their presence may indicate increased severity of disorder and should not be ignored. As vowel misarticulations have received relatively scant attention, their assessment and remediation have not been addressed. Procedures for the analysis and interpretation of vowel errors are described. A case study is presented to illustrate approaches to vowel assessment and remediation. Clinician attention to this aspect of phonological d

Apraxia of speech (or verbal apraxia) is a controversial disorder, considered by some to be an impairment of the motor programming of speech. Because the disorder is characterized by "higher order" errors such as metathesis and segment addition as well as by errors of apparent dyscoordination of articulation, it seems to reflect a relatively high level of damage to the nervous system. This report presents acoustic descriptions of the speech of seven persons diagnosed as having apraxia of speech but without severe aphasic impairment, especially agrammatism. The acoustic results indicate a varie
