This study investigated the effect on gait of changing prosthetic alignment for five people with amputations. Three-dimensional angular kinematic data were recorded by electrogoniometers positioned at their hips and knees. Indices of symmetry were developed in time and frequency domains for motion data of lower limbs when walking. These measures of symmetry were determined at different prostheses alignment settings and used to assess the possibility of aligning below-knee prostheses on the basis of symmetry of lower limb motion. Optimal or neutral alignment of below-knee prosthesis, as selecte

PURPOSE: Additive manufacturing (AM) is increasingly applied to lower-limb prosthetic sockets, offering faster production, lower cost, and improved customisation. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MMAM) enables rigid and flexible regions to be combined in a single socket, potentially improving load distribution and user comfort. However, research on MMAM remains limited and is distributed across engineering, biomechanical, and clinical disciplines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Web of Sc

Upper-extremity amputation, particularly at or proximal to the elbow joint, is devastating. The complexities of upper-extremity function are challenging to replicate, even with modern prostheses. This leads to a relatively higher rate of prosthesis rejection in upper-extremity amputees as compared to lower-extremity amputees. However, the challenges of performing a functionally useful transhumeral amputation should dissuade even the least of us from seeking to optimize both residual limb and patient functional potential. A poorly done, or even standard, transhumeral amputation is destined to d

For research in the field of prosthetics to be representative of clinical realities, studies require inclusion of clinical standard prosthetic sockets. This necessitates involvement of a prosthetist (clinical professional) in any study, which is to truly explore the effectiveness of existing or novel prosthetic technologies. Unfortunately, there is a global shortage of prosthetists. With many technological advances in upper-limb prosthetics coming from engineering focused labs, it is unsurprising that studies are frequently conducted with anatomically intact individuals. In this paper, we pres

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, notable progress in mechatronics paved the way for a new generation of arm prostheses, expanding motor capabilities thanks to their multiple active joints. Yet, the design of control schemes for these advanced devices still poses a challenge, especially with the limited availability of command signals for higher levels of arm impairment. When addressing this challenge, current commercial devices lack versatility and customizing options to be employed as test-beds for developing novel control schemes. As a consequence, researchers resort to using lab-specific exp

Achievement of fit between the residual limb and prosthetic socket during socket manufacture is a priority for clinicians and is essential for safety. Clinicians have recognised the potential benefits of having a sensor system that can provide objective socket-limb interface pressure measurements during socket fitting, but the cost of existing systems makes current technology prohibitive. This study will report on the characterisation, validation and preliminary clinical implementation of a low cost, portable, wireless sensor system designed for use during socket manufacture. Characterisation

BACKGROUND: Closing the control loop in myoelectric prostheses by providing artificial somatosensory feedback is recognized as an important goal. However, designing a feedback interface that is effective in realistic conditions is still a challenge. Namely, in some situations, feedback can be redundant, as the information it provides can be readily obtained through hearing or vision (e.g., grasping force estimated from the deformation of a compliant object). EMG feedback is a non-invasive method wherein the tactile stimulation conveys to the user the level of their own myoelectric signal, henc

Amputees typically experience changes in residual limb volume in their daily lives. It causes an uncomfortable fit of the socket by applying high pressure on the sensitive area of the residual limb or by loosening the socket. In this study, we developed a transfemoral prosthetic socket for above-the-knee amputees that ensures a good socket fit by maintaining uniform and constant contact pressure despite volume changes in the residual limb. The socket has two air bladders in the posterior femoral region, and the pneumatic controller is located on the tibia of the prosthesis. The pneumatic syste

The aim of this paper is to present an analytical method of calculating forces acting on the thumb, index, middle finger, and metacarpal part of a hand prosthesis in a cylindrical grip. This prehension pattern represents a common operation of grabbing and manipulating everyday life objects. The design process assumed that such a prosthesis would have 5 fully operating fingers and 18 total degrees of freedom: three for each finger including the thumb, and another three for the wrist. The assumed load was 1 kg and the diameter equaled 70 mm, representing a water bottle. The method was based on a

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic service development and delivery rely on data describing population needs. These needs are context-specific, but most existing data come from high-income countries or small geographic areas, which are often not comparable. This study analysed routinely collected digital patient record data at multiple time points to provide insights into characteristics of people accessing Cambodian prosthetic services.
METHODS: We investigated trends in birth year, sex, year and reason for limb absence, and prosthesis type, over three decades. Then, we observed data from 2005 and 2019

BACKGROUND: Wearing appropriate active prosthesis is the guarantee of daily life for amputees. Normally the controller of the traditional active transfemoral prosthesis is designed based on the mathematical model. The modelling error and the external interference will reduce the control accuracy of the system and make the prosthesis unable to operate in the desired trajectory.
METHODS: Firstly, combined with time delay estimation (TDE), a model-free robust integral sliding mode impedance controller is designed. This method not only suppress the impedance error, but also eliminate the nonlinea

Despite the numerous prosthetic hand designs that are commercially available, people with upper limb loss still frequently report dissatisfaction and abandonment. Over the past decade there have been numerous advances in prosthetic design, control, sensation, and device attachment. Each offers the potential to enhance function and satisfaction, but most come at high costs and involve surgical risks. Here, we discuss potential barriers and solutions to promote the widespread use of novel prosthetic technology. With appropriate reimbursement, multidisciplinary care teams, device-specific rehabil

OBJECTIVE: Energy-storage-and-return (ESAR) prosthetic feet have improved amputee mobility due to their efficient conversion of strain energy to mechanical work. However, this efficiency is typically achieved using light-weight, high-stiffness materials, which generate high-frequency vibrations that are potentially injurious if transmitted to biological tissues. To reduce the vibration which may cause cumulative tissue trauma, high-frequency vibration suppression by piezoelectric shunt damping patches on a commercial ESAR foot was evaluated.
METHODS: Two patches with either passive or active

Osseointegration (OI) is the direct anchorage of a metal implant into bone, allowing for the connection of an external prosthesis to the skeleton. Osseointegration was first discovered in the 1960s based on the microscopic analysis of titanium implant placed into host bone. New bone was observed to attach directly to the metal surface. Following clinical investigations into dentistry applications, OI was adapted to treat extremity amputations. These bone anchored implants, which penetrate the skin and soft tissues, eliminate many of the challenges of conventional prosthetic sockets, such as po

Many amputees who wear a leg prosthesis develop significant skin wounds on their residual limb. The exact cause of these wounds is unclear as little work has studied the interface between the prosthetic device and user. Our research objective was to develop a quantitative method for assessing displacement patterns of the gel liner during walking for patients with transtibial amputation. Using a reflective marker system and a custom clear socket, evaluations were conducted with a clear transparent test socket mounted over a plaster limb model and a deformable limb model. Distances between marke

One of the most important factors in successful upper limb prostheses is the socket design. Sockets must be individually fabricated to arrive at a geometry that suits the user's morphology and appropriately distributes the pressures associated with prosthetic use across the residual limb. In higher levels of amputation, such as transhumeral, this challenge is amplified as prosthetic weight and the physical demands placed on the residual limb are heightened. Yet, in the upper limb, socket fabrication is largely driven by heuristic practices. An analytical understanding of the interactions betwe
