The repelling effect of plant secondary metabolites on water voles, Arvicola amphibius.

BACKGROUND: Water voles (Arvicola amphibius Linnaeus 1758) are abundant in most parts of Germany and other European countries. They are known to cause serious damage in fruit and horticulture as well as in agriculture. Currently available repellents, scaring devices and household remedies are mostly inefficient. Tests were conducted to establish whether water voles can be repelled using plant secondary metabolites. These compounds are produced by many plant species as part of their defence against herbivores and pathogens. RESULTS: In this study, 12 volatile substances were tested in T-maze t

A blond coat color variation in meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus).

Color mutations occur frequently among rodents. Here we describe a blond coat color mutation in the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) that arose in a captive breeding colony established from wild-caught animals from southern Illinois. The blond coat coloration results from changes in the color and distribution of pigments in the hair. The mutation is monogenic autosomal recessive.

[Neurons in the visual cortex of Microtus brandti].

Neurons were described in the visual Cortex of Microtus brandti, a Mongolian harmful rodent living in day-activity. We find following types of neurons in our Golgi-material: 1. spiny neurons: pyramidal and stellate neurons. 2. smooth or sparsely spined neurons: smooth, large neurons, sparsely spined small neurons with descending axons, sparsely spined neurons with ascending axons. Double-bouquet-, chandelier and neuroglioforme cells are not impregnated. There are no bipolare neurons (Martinotti cells) among the neurons with ascending axons. The small, sparsely spined neurons are not only in la

Hybrid formation within the genus Leishmania?

Leishmanial organisms isolated from a desert rodent (Psammomys obesus) and a feral dog (Canis familiaris) in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia were isoenzymically distinct from Leishmania major and L. arabica, organisms usually associated with human and wild animal cutaneous leishmaniasis in this area. Further examination of isoenzyme banding patterns of cloned populations of these organisms, together with karyotyping using orthogonal field alternation gel electrophoresis and the use of highly specific kinetoplast DNA probes, has produced evidence suggesting that these organisms isolated fr

Immunohistochemical study of gastroenteropancreatic endocrine cells of the herbivorous Japanese field vole, Microtus montebelli.

The gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) endocrine cells of the Japanese field vole were studied immunohistochemically. Somatostatin-, 5-hydroxytryptamine-, glicentin-, glucagon-, bovine pancreatic polypeptide-, gastrin-, gastric inhibitory polypeptide-, cholecystokinin-, substance P-, secretin-, neurotensin- and insulin-immunoreactive cells were revealed. The characteristic findings of the regional distribution and relative frequency of these immunoreactive cells in the GEP system of the vole were as follows. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were more numerous in the oxyntic glands than in the pylor

Babesiosis in Long Island. Host-parasite relationships of rodent- and human-derived Babesia microti isolates in hamsters.

The effects of splenectomy and size of inoculum on response of hamsters to three isolates of Babesia microti (two rodent- and one human-derived) from Long Island were studied. Splenectomy of hamsters did not enhance susceptibility to the rodent isolates of B. microti at a dosage of 5 X 10(7) parasites. Larger parasite inocula produced shorter prepatent periods and slightly shorter duration of infection in intact hamsters. Inoculum size was not contributory to mortality of hamsters or to pathogenesis. Hamsters showed profound anemia with depressed hematocrit and hemoglobin values and erythrocyt

The Effect of Plant Quercetin on Immune Function of Microtus Fortis.

Quercetin, a widely occurring phytogenic flavonoid, is the primary secondary metabolite in the diet of Microtus fortis. This study investigated the effects of dietary quercetin on immune organ development and cytokine levels in Microtus fortis. Microtus fortis were fed a standard diet containing 0, 1.5%, 3%, 5%, or 8% quercetin for 20 consecutive days. The results show that, compared to the control group, treatment with 5% quercetin increased the spleen and thymus indices by 14.47% and 11.67%, respectively. The proliferation of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and macrophages in Microtus fortis va

Testicular histomorphometric patterns and spermatogenesis dynamics of Oecomys bicolor tomes, 1860 (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Although the order Rodentia does not present a high risk of extinction compared to mammals as a whole, several families demonstrate high levels of threat and/or data deficiency, therefore highlighting the need for targeted research and the application of ecological and reproductive data to the development of conservation actions. The order Rodentia, the largest among mammals, includes 9 families, and the family Cricetidae is the most diverse of the Brazilian rodents. In Brazil, 12 of the 16 genera of Oecomys are found. Oecomys bicolor is known in Brazil as the 'arboreal rat' and is, found in d

Andryoides gen. n. and morphological key features in cestodes of the family Anoplocephalidae sensu stricto (Cyclophyllidea) in mammals.

As presently defined, the tapeworm genus Andrya Railliet, 1895 (Cyclophyllidea: Anoplocephalidae sensu stricto) includes the type species A. rhopalocephala (Riehm, 1881) in hares of the genus Lepus Linnaeus (Leporidae) in western Eurasia and four species in cricetid (Neotominae, Sigmodontinae) and octodontid rodents in North and South America. The host range of Andrya is puzzling, because it is the only genus of anoplocephalid (s. s.) cestodes parasitising both rodents and lagomorphs. The present morphological analysis shows that the American species of Andrya share multiple consistent feature

Bank Voles Show More Impulsivity in IntelliCage Learning Tasks than Wood Mice.

Impulsivity is a personality trait of healthy individuals, but in extreme forms common in mental disorders. Previous behavioral testing of wild-caught bank voles and wood mice suggested impulsiveness in bank voles. Here, we compared behavioral performance of bank voles and wood mice in tests for response control in the IntelliCage. In the reaction time task, a test similar to the five-choice serial-reaction time task (5CSRTT), bank voles made more premature responses. Impulsivity in the reaction time task was associated with smaller medial habenular nucleus in bank voles. Additional tests reve

Puumala Orthohantavirus Infection Does Not Affect the Trapping Success of Its Reservoir Host.

Pathogens might affect behavior of infected reservoir hosts and hence their trappability, which could bias population estimates of pathogen prevalence. In this study, we used snap-trapping data on Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV)-infected (n = 1619) and noninfected (n = 6940) bank voles (Myodes glareolus) from five vole cycles, normally representing increase, peak, and decline phase, to evaluate if infection status affected trapping success. If PUUV infection, as previously suggested, increases activity and/or mobility, we would expect a higher proportion of infected than noninfected specimens i

Molecular Characterisation and Phylogeny of Tula Virus in Kazakhstan.

Orthohantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens that play a significant role in public health. These viruses can cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Eurasia. In the Republic of Kazakhstan, the first human cases were registered in the year 2000 in the West Kazakhstan region. Small mammals can be reservoirs of orthohantaviruses. Previous studies showed orthohantavirus antigens in wild-living small mammals in four districts of West Kazakhstan. Clinical studies suggested that there might be further regions with human orthohantavirus infections in Kazakhstan, but genetic data of orthohantaviru

First Evidence of Akodon-Borne Orthohantavirus in Northeastern Argentina.

Orthohantaviruses (genus Orthohantavirus, family Hantaviridae) are the etiologic agents of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in the Americas. In South America, orthohantaviruses are highly diverse and are hosted by sigmodontine rodents (subfamiliy Sigmodontinae, family Cricetidae), an also diverse group of rodents. The aims of this work were to (1) identify orthohantavirus hosts and (2) to study the spatial and temporal variations in the prevalence of infection and their associations with community, environmental and individual characteristics, in different environments of Misiones province, north

Transcriptional profiling of Microtus fortis responses to S. japonicum: New sight into Mf-Hsp90α resistance mechanism.

AIMS: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease with a chronic debilitating character caused by parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. The main disease-causing species of Schistosoma in China is S. japonicum. M fortis has been proved to be a nonpermissive host of S. japonicum. Mf-HSP90α (Microtus fortis heat shock protein 90alpha), the homologue of HSP90α, display anti-schistosome effect in vitro and in vivo. In the current study, in order to investigate the mechanism of anti-schistosome effect of Mf-HSP90α, we conducted RNA-Seq to obtain the transcriptome profile of M. fortis liver infect

Seroprevalence of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus in Three Species of Voles (Microtus spp.) in Poland.

Rodents play a role as reservoir hosts for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). We trapped 77 voles of the genus Microtus and tested their blood using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the presence of antibodies against TBEV. We detected TBEV antibodies in three adult individuals (4%). Voles might play a role in the circulation of TBEV.

Antechiniella septentrionalis n. sp. (Spirurida: Acuariidae), a new intestinal nematode parasite of the tundra vole Microtus oeconomus (Pallas) (Rodentia: Muridae) in the north-east of Russia.

Antechiniella septentrionalis n. sp. (Spirurida: Acuariidae) is described from the duodenum of a tundra vole, Microtus oeconomus (Pallas), collected in the Magadan region in the north-east part of Russia. It differs from A. suffodiax (Beveridge & Barker, 1975) and A. sertatum Smales, 1991 mainly in having a larger number of postcloacal papillae (5-6 pairs vs 4 pairs), a differently shaped left spicule, the disposition of precloacal papillae in two rows vs one, and oblong vs oval eggs. Other differences include the different disposition of ovaries in A. septentrionalis n. sp and A. suffodia
