Survey of benzimidazole resistance in ascarid parasites of poultry.

Ascarid parasites, such as Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum, are nearly ubiquitous in poultry and can cause serious production losses. H. gallinarum is of particular concern because of its role as a vector for the protozoan Histomonas meleagridis, the cause of blackhead disease. Currently, only the benzimidazole anthelmintic, fenbendazole (FBZ), is approved for use in poultry, and recently, FBZ resistance has been discovered and validated in populations of the turkey ascarid Ascaridia dissimilis and in ascarid of gallinaceous birds H. gallinarum. Here, we further explore the prevalence

Retrieving ascarid and taeniid eggs from the biological remains of a Neolithic dog from the late 9th millennium BC in Western Iran.

BACKGROUND: Paleoparasitology reveals the status of parasitic infections in humans and animals in ancient times based on parasitic particles found in biological remains from archaeological excavations. This line of research emerged in Iran in 2013. OBJECTIVE: The identification of parasites from Neolithic times is an attractive subject that shows the oldest origins of parasitic infections in a given geographical region. From an archaeological point of view, this archaeological site is well-known for animal domestication and agriculture in ancient Iran. METHODS: In this study, soil deposited

Two new species of ascaridoid nematodes in Brazilian Crocodylomorpha from the Upper Cretaceous.

Two new ascaridoid species, Bauruascaris cretacicus n. gen. et n. sp., and Bauruascaris adamantinensis n. gen. et n. sp., are described based on the fossils of eggs preserved in 80-70 million year old phosphatized coprolites of Crocodyliformes, chronologically assigned to the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian/Maastrichtian age), collected from sedimentary rocks of the Bauru Group, Adamantina Formation in the municipality of Santo Anastácio, in the southwestern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, South America. This paper describes the oldest ascaridoid species ever recorded in Crocodylomorpha.

INTESTINAL AND BLOOD PARASITES IN SCARLET (ARA MACAO) AND GREAT GREEN (ARA AMBIGUA) MACAWS IN WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTERS IN COSTA RICA.

Costa Rica undertakes continuous efforts to recover the native population of macaw species through rehabilitation programs for breeding and releasing birds in protected areas. In the summer of 2018, a total of 107 scarlet (Ara macao) and 93 great green (Ara ambigua) macaws were sampled in four wildlife rehabilitation centers in Costa Rica. Fecal samples representing 200 individuals were analyzed for intestinal parasites, and 23 individuals were sampled for hemoparasites. Ascaridia and Capillaria were found in fecal samples. No hemoparasites were found. The distribution of percentage of infecti

Beyond fenbendazole: Molecular and integrated pathways for managing poultry ascarid resistance.

Collins et al. (2025) present important evidence of emerging fenbendazole (FBZ) resistance in Ascaridia galli and widespread resistance in Heterakis gallinarum. While the survey highlights an urgent production challenge, broader scientific and translational perspectives are needed. We emphasize three key areas: (i) genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying benzimidazole resistance in ascarids, which remain poorly defined compared to Haemonchus contortus and equine Parascaris; (ii) the One Health and regulatory implications of continued FBZ dependence in poultry production; and (iii) integrat

A copro-antigen ELISA for the detection of ascarid infections in chickens.

A reliable method of diagnosing the most prevalent helminth infections in chickens is vital for developing effective control strategies. Ascaridia galli and Heterakisgallinarum are phylogenetically close nematode species that can elicit the development of cross-reactive antibodies in chickens. Therefore, an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) based on Ascaridia galli antigens in faeces of chickens to detect and quantify infections with both A. galli and H. gallinarum was developed. The ELISA utilised polyclonal antibodies that were obtained from rabbits immunised with soluble antigens isolated f

Cerebral larva migrans in a raccoon (Procyon lotor).

During 1997, gross and histopathologic examinations were performed on an adult female raccoon (Procyon lotor) that was live-trapped in Corvallis, Oregon. Multifocal eosinophilic granulomas indicative of neural and visceral larva migrans were observed. However, within these granulomas, the presence of parasitic larva was seen only in the cerebrum. Morphologic characteristics indicated that the nematode was an ascarid larva. However, it was smaller than the larva of Baylisascaris sp. This appears to be the first documented case of cerebral larva migrans in a raccoon.

Natural intestinal parasite infection in synanthropic migratory Barn Swallow, Hirundo rustica, in central Peninsular Malaysia.

Migratory birds are potential vectors transmitting zoonotic parasites, bacteria, and viruses that can significantly affect human health. Over 60 diseases have been identified to be associated with these birds. Given their close proximity to human habitation, the potential transmission of zoonotic diseases is a major concern for the public. In this study, we aimed to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites in the droppings of the Barn Swallow, Hirundo rustica, a bird species that annually migrates to Malaysia. Eighty droppings from H. rustica were collected; 13.75% of the samples were fou

Testing a Sustainable Strategy Against Poultry Helminth Stages Developing in the Soil.

Free-ranging hens are at risk of infection by parasites characterized by certain stages that develop in the soil until attaining the infective phase. To analyze the usefulness of a biological control strategy of helminths affecting pasturing hens, fecal samples containing eggs of the helminths Ascaridia galli and Capillaria spp. were collected and then homogenized with an electric mixer. A total of 64 small areas were established by placing wooden frames (15 × 40 × 30 cm) on the ground and then adding approximately 100 g of a fecal mixture (per area). Four batches of 16 areas were considered:
