The aetiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a disease with a remarkable racial and geographical distribution. In most parts of the world it is a rare condition and in only a handful of places does this low risk profile alter. These include the Southern Chinese, Eskimos and other Arctic natives, inhabitants of South-East Asia and also the populations of North Africa and Kuwait.

Experimental Evaluation of the Role of Ecologically-Relevant Hosts and Vectors in Japanese Encephalitis Virus Genotype Displacement.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a flavivirus that is maintained via transmission between Culex spp. mosquitoes and water birds across a large swath of southern Asia and northern Australia. Currently JEV is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable encephalitis in humans in Asia. Five genotypes of JEV (G-I⁻G-V) have been responsible for historical and current outbreaks in endemic regions, and G-I and G-III co-circulate throughout Southern Asia. While G-III has historically been the dominant genotype worldwide, G-I has gradually but steadily displaced G-III. The objective of this study was t

Global conservation prioritization areas in three dimensions of crocodilian diversity.

Crocodilians are a taxonomic group of large predators with important ecological and evolutionary benefits for ecosystem functioning in the face of global change. Anthropogenic actions affect negatively crocodilians' survival and more than half of the species are threatened with extinction worldwide. Here, we map and explore three dimensions of crocodilian diversity on a global scale. To highlight the ecological importance of crocodilians, we correlate the spatial distribution of species with the ecosystem services of nutrient retention in the world. We calculate the effectiveness of global pro

Genomic Epidemiology of Antimalarial Drug Resistance in Plasmodium falciparum in Southern China.

Emerging artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia poses a significant risk to malaria control and eradication goals, including China's plan to eliminate malaria nationwide by 2020. Plasmodium falciparum was endemic in China, especially in Southern China. Parasites from this region have shown decreased susceptibility to artemisinin and delayed parasite clearance after artemisinin treatment. Understanding the genetic basis of artemisinin resistance and identifying specific genetic loci associated with this phenotype is crucial for surveillance and containment of resistance. In this study, parasi

Whole genome sequencing analysis of Salmonella enterica serovar Weltevreden isolated from human stool and contaminated food samples collected from the Southern coastal area of China.

Salmonella enterica serovar Weltevreden is the most common non-typhoid Salmonella found in South and Southeast Asia. It causes zoonoses worldwide through the consumption of contaminated foods and seafood, and is considered as an important food-borne pathogen in China, especially in the Southern coastal area. We compared the whole genomes of 44 S. Weltevreden strains isolated from human stool and contaminated food samples from Southern Coastal China, in order to investigate their phylogenetic relationships and establish their genetic relatedness to known international strains. Burden of type 2 diabetes in Asia-Pacific regions, 1990-2021: GBD 2021 analysis with forecast to 2050.

AIMS: Asia faces a rising diabetes burden, with significant subregional variations. This study analyses trends from 1990 to 2021 and projects future burdens to guide targeted interventions. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, we assessed type 2 diabetes cases, deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and age-standardized rates across 35 Asian countries/regions. Decomposition analysis identified burden drivers, and the Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort (BAPC) model predicted trends. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2021, Asia witnessed a substantial increase in the burden of

Air pollution and under-5 child mortality: linking satellite and IPUMS-DHS data across 41 countries in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Despite progress, under-five mortality remains high, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where around 13,400 children die daily. Environmental pollutants, including PM2.5 from outdoor air and household air pollution, significantly contribute to these preventable deaths. METHODS: This cross-country study combined satellite data with 113 surveys from the IPUMS-DHS dataset (1998-2019) to examine under-five child mortality in 41 developing countries. The integration of Global Annual Particulate Matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less (PM2.5) Grids from Socioecon

Distribution of capsule and O types in Klebsiella pneumoniae causing neonatal sepsis in Africa and South Asia: A meta-analysis of genome-predicted serotype prevalence to inform potential vaccine coverage.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae causes ~20% of sepsis in neonates, with ~40% crude mortality. A vaccine administered to pregnant women, protecting against ≥70% of K. pneumoniae infections, could avert ~400,000 cases and ~80,000 deaths annually, mostly in Africa and South Asia. Vaccine formulations targeting the capsular polysaccharide (K) or lipopolysaccharide (O) antigens are in development. Global K. pneumoniae populations display extensive K and O diversity, necessitating a polyvalent vaccine targeted to the serotypes associated with neonatal disease in relevant geographical regions. We i

Causes and risk factors for deaths in young infants in South Asia: the ANISA prospective population-based observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Strategies for reducing infant mortality require accurate, local, population-level data. We conducted a population-based observational study in three countries in South Asia to describe risk factors, causes and rates of mortality in young infants. METHODS: Pregnancies, births and pregnancy outcomes were determined through household surveillance, and cause of deaths was ascertained by verbal autopsy. Cox regression was used to identify risk factors for deaths during days 0-<3, 3-<7 and 7-<60. RESULTS: Among 73 622 pregnancy outcomes, 4638 deaths were identified, including 1669 s

Echinococcus multilocularis in Kyrgyzstan: similarity in the Asian EmsB genotypic profiles from village populations of Eastern mole voles (Ellobius tancrei) and dogs in the Alay valley.

Echinococcus multilocularis is a cestode that causes human alveolar echinococcosis, a lethal zoonosis of public health concern in central Asia and western China. In the present study, one of 42 Eastern mole voles (Ellobius tancrei) caught in Sary Mogol (Alay valley, southern Kyrgyzstan) presented liver lesions with E. multilocularis from which the EmsB target was amplified. The Asian profile obtained was almost identical to one amplified from domestic dog faeces collected in a nearby village. This observation adds additional information to the potential role of E. tancrei in the transmission o

[Japanese encephalitis in Southern Europe].

In 2012, a fragment of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genome was isolated from a pool of Culex pipiens mosquitoes caught in 2010 and 2011 in Northern Italy. JEV has a broad geographical distribution in South and Southeast Asia and Oceania, and is the most important cause of viral encephalitis in Asia in humans and also causes encephalitis in horses and fertility problems in pigs. However, recently isolated JEV genome fragments in mosquitoes in Italy could be an indication of repeated introduction of JEV, enzootic circulation of JEV or a related virus in Southern Europe. Until more infor

Prevalence of elder abuse among community-dwelling older adults in South Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is an escalating global concern, jeopardizing public health and human rights while hindering the pursuit of healthy aging. In South Asia, socio-cultural complexities, including patriarchal norms, family-centric caregiving practices, and inadequate institutional support systems exacerbate the problem. Despite global attention, region-specific evidence from South Asia remains limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of community-based elder abuse and sub-types among community-dwelling older adults (≥ 60 years) in South Asia and explored g

Ancient introgression drives wild boar expansion and phenotypic diversification of domestic pigs.

Despite the ubiquity of wild boar populations across Eurasia, their origins, routes of dispersal, and phenotypic evolution remain uncertain. Here, using 745 genomes representing populations across Eurasia, we demonstrate that wild boar expanded from South Asia during the Middle Pleistocene. This expansion was preceded by a Pliocene introgression (~3 to 5 million years ago) in South Asia from an archaic Suinae lineage that introduced a ~43 megabase X-chromosomal haplotype into the ancestral wild boar population. This haplotype includes loci associated with increased body size and adaptation to

Perceived needs of disease vector control programs: A review and synthesis of (sub)national assessments from South Asia and the Middle East.

Systems for disease vector control should be effective, efficient, and flexible to be able to tackle contemporary challenges and threats in the control and elimination of vector-borne diseases. As a priority activity towards the strengthening of vector control systems, it has been advocated that countries conduct a vector-control needs assessment. A review was carried out of the perceived needs for disease vector control programs among eleven countries and subnational states in South Asia and the Middle East. In each country or state, independent teams conducted vector control needs assessment

Epidemiological status of kissing-bugs in South East Asia: A preliminary assessment.

Kissing-bugs (Triatominae) are being increasingly reported as a biting nuisance in SE Asia, with severe bite reactions sometimes leading to anaphylactic shock. In addition, they pose a risk for vector-borne transmission of trypanosomiasis, with potential diagnostic difficulties due to the range of trypanosome species in the region. Here, we review available information about Triatominae in Asia, and present additional comparisons using morphometry, cytogenetics, and new DNA sequence data, to clarify their relationship with each other and with the better known American species. We deduce that a
