Cardiovascular Health at the Intersection of Race and Gender in Medicare Fee for Service.

IMPORTANCE: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people have significantly higher rates of cardiovascular-related conditions than cisgender people, and Black and Hispanic people have higher rates of cardiovascular-related conditions than non-Hispanic White people. However, little is known about the prevalence of cardiovascular-related conditions among racial and ethnic subgroups of TGD people. OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of cardiovascular-related conditions across racial and ethnic groups for TGD and cisgender people using quantitative intersectional methods. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PA

Incidence and prevalence of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in a contemporary, multi-ethnic cohort.

BACKGROUND: Ecological comparisons suggest that neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is more common in African Caribbean and Asian compared to White people. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to rigorously assess susceptibility across multiple racial and ethnic groups from the same cohort. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of > 39 million person-years of observation from members of Kaiser Permanente Southern California. The electronic health records of individuals with at least one International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code for NMOSD were reviewed to identify persons wh

Lipoprotein(a)-dependent cardiovascular risk in different populations: are thresholds the same?

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a genetically determined, independent and causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and aortic stenosis. Large prospective cohort studies together with Mendelian Randomization studies have established its role in cardiovascular risk which has led to the introduction of screening and the development of Lp(a)-lowering therapies. However, interpretation of Lp(a) results in clinical practice remains a challenge, particularly across populations with significantly different baseline levels. DISCUSSION: Lp(a) levels vary according to

Disparities in COVID-19 Cases, Deaths, and Vaccination, by Race and Ethnicity and Asian Ethnic Groups, Santa Clara County, California, 2020-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Disaggregated data on Asian ethnic groups are needed to identify health disparities among Asian people. We examined COVID-19 incidence, deaths, and vaccinations among Asian ethnic groups in Santa Clara County, California. METHODS: We extracted data on SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 vaccinations from December 15, 2020, through August 6, 2021, from the California Reportable Diseases Information Exchange and the California Immunization Registry. We assigned Asian ethnic group based on name for missing self-reported information. We calculated age-adjusted rates and rate ratios of

Quantifying variations associated with dental caries reveals disparity in effect allele frequencies across diverse populations.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries (DC) is a multifaceted oral condition influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Recent advancements in genotyping and sequencing technologies, such as Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have helped researchers to identify numerous genetic variants associated with DC, but their prevalence and significance across diverse global populations remain poorly understood as most of the studies were conducted in European populations, and very few were conducted in Asians specifically in Indians. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the genetic affinity of effect allele

Maternal serum zinc level is associated with risk of preeclampsia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a multi-organ syndrome that onsets in the second half of pregnancy. It is the second leading cause of maternal death globally. The homeostasis of zinc (Zn) levels is important for feto-maternal health. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to collect all studies available to synthesize the evidence regarding the association between maternal Zn levels and the risk of preeclampsia. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted via searching seven electronic databases [PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, African Journals Online (AJOL), ClinicalTrial.gov, and two Chines

Thyroxine suppression therapy in Graves' disease.

A recent Japanese report of a novel 'block-and-replace' regime for Graves' hyperthyroidism in which thyroxine was continued alone after the combination therapy was stopped was associated with a negligible relapse rate of less than 2%. Such a finding has the potential to revolutionize the management of Graves' disease but a similarly large study from Scotland failed to confirm any benefit from the new treatment. Apart from obvious differences in race and dietary iodine there is no adequate explanation for the discrepant results. In all studies reporting a fall in thyrotropin (TSH) receptor anti

Human blood acetaldehyde levels: with improved methods, a clearer picture emerges.

New reliable methods for the determination of acetaldehyde in human blood, either from separated plasma or from acid-precipitated whole blood, demonstrate that the blood of healthy Caucasians contains at most only extremely small amounts of acetaldehyde (less than 1 microM) after moderate alcohol intoxication. On the other hand, among about 50% of the Japanese population ethanol ingestion results in elevated blood acetaldehyde levels (10-50 microM) with consequent unpleasant cardiovascular responses such as facial flushing and tachycardia, apparently because of a lack of one of the acetaldehyd

Genomic Insight Into the Population Structure and Admixture History of Tai-Kadai-Speaking Sui People in Southwest China.

Sui people, which belong to the Tai-Kadai-speaking family, remain poorly characterized due to a lack of genome-wide data. To infer the fine-scale population genetic structure and putative genetic sources of the Sui people, we genotyped 498,655 genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using SNP arrays in 68 Sui individuals from seven indigenous populations in Guizhou province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in Southwest China and co-analyzed with available East Asians via a series of population genetic methods including principal component analysis (PCA), ADMIXTURE, pairwise Fst

Meta-analysis of congenitally missing teeth in the permanent dentition: Prevalence, variations across ethnicities, regions and time.

BACKGROUND: Congenitally missing teeth (CMT) are of concern to many fields of dentistry. Only a few reviews have been published in this regard. AIM: The aim was to analyze the literature on CMT in the permanent dentition, excluding the third molars, and to identify potential links with ethnicity, geographical regions, and time. METHODS: A total of 118 reports on CMT were collected by two authors by interrogating databases. Sample homogeneity, publication bias, publication year (in Caucasian and Mongoloid samples, and in general), ethnicities, and geography of CMT prevalence were statisticall

Using intersectionality to explore physical activity participation amongst individuals with vision loss from ethnic minority backgrounds in the United Kingdom.

Participation in physical activity (PA) is essential for maintaining health and mobility. Although women, individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, and people experiencing vision loss are reportedly the least active of their respective identity classifications literature is yet to acknowledge the intersectional nature of group identification, and the ways in which barriers and facilitators to PA might vary or compound in instances of multiple-minority status. Fifteen people with vision loss (six male) from different cultural backgrounds (six White: nine South Asian) were interviewed. Refle

Adjustment disorders in Asians and Asian Americans.

In the DSM-5, adjustment disorders have undergone a conceptual shift with a new designation as a constellation of stress-related conditions in response to exposure to a distressing event which may be perceived as traumatic or non-traumatic. This is in contrast to its previous description in DSM-IV-TR, which focused on the presence of significant distress following a crisis event, but did not require the individual to meet the criteria for a more serious disorder. This paper will present a brief overview of the clinical nosology, etiology, and treatment modalities for adjustment disorders with
