The antiprotozoal activity of sixteen asteraceae species native to Sudan and bioactivity-guided isolation of xanthanolides from Xanthium brasilicum.

In vitro screening of the dichloromethane extracts of 16 Asteraceae species native to Sudan for activity against major protozoan pathogens revealed that a Xanthium brasilicum Vell. [syn. X. strumarium var. brasilicum (Vell.) Baker in Mart.] extract was the most active against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, the etiological agent of East African human trypanosomiasis (IC(50) = 0.1 microg/mL). This plant extract also exhibited noticeable activities against T. cruzi (Chagas disease), Leishmania donovani (Kala-Azar) as well as Plasmodium falciparum (Malaria tropica). Bioactivity-guided fractionati

Evolution of Leaf Morphoanatomical Characters in the Catolesia Clade (Asteraceae, Eupatorieae, Gyptidinae) Reveals the New Monotypic Genus Nadia.

The Catolesia clade (Asteraceae, Eupatorieae, Gyptidinae) comprises four genera (Bahianthus, Catolesia, Lapidia, and Morithamnus), mostly confined to the Espinhaço mountain range of Eastern Brazil. Although this lineage is statistically well supported in molecular phylogenetic studies, recent findings point to Disynaphia praeficta being currently placed in the Catolesia clade, making Disynaphia paraphyletic. We analysed, scored, and mapped 102 leaf anatomical characters from all species of the Catolesia clade and selected outgroups to test the placement of D. praeficta into this clade, proposi

Neo-clerodane diterpenoid, a new metalloprotease snake venom inhibitor from Baccharis trimera (Asteraceae): anti-proteolytic and anti-hemorrhagic properties.

Many plants are used in traditional medicine as active agents against various effects induced by snakebite. Few attempts have been made however to identify the nature of plant natural products with anti-ophidian properties. Baccharis trimera (Less) DC (Asteraceae), known in Brazil as carqueja, has been popularly used to treat liver diseases, rheumatism, diabetes, as well as digestive, hepatic and renal disorders. The active component was identified as 7alpha-hydroxy-3,13-clerodadiene-16,15:18,19-diolide, C20H28O5, (clerodane diterpenoid, Bt-CD). We report now the anti-proteolytic and anti-hemo

Insights into the Corrosion Inhibition Performance of Plant Extracts of Different Genera in the Asteraceae Family for Q235 Steel in H2SO4 Medium.

Nowadays, the development of plant extracts as corrosion inhibitors to protect metals from corrosion is a popular research direction. However, given the vast diversity of plant species in nature, it is imperative to explore effective methods to improve screening efficiency in order to quickly identify the corrosion inhibition potential of plants. In this work, a new strategy for developing plant-extracted eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors based on the family and genus of plants is proposed. Three plants of different genera in the Asteraceae family, including Artemisia argyi extract (AAE), Chry

Balancing the Oral Redox State: Endogenous and Exogenous Sources of Reactive Oxygen Species and the Antioxidant Role of Lamiaceae and Asteraceae.

Background/Objectives: Oral health is a complex concept involving physical, psychological, emotional, and social components. A key factor in maintaining oral tissue integrity is redox balance, which is disrupted by oxidative stress (OS) through an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses. This study examines the contribution of endogenous and exogenous sources to OS and explores the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants from the Asteraceae and Lamiaceae families in restoring redox homeostasis and improving oral health. Methods: A literature review was conduc

Comparative chloroplast genomics of Ajania sericea and sympatric Asteraceae species identifies shared candidate molecular features associated with alpine adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Ajania sericea is endemic to the Dali region of Yunnan and is currently the southernmost known member of the genus Ajania worldwide. It co-occurs with Aster brachytrichus, Anaphalis pannosa, and Leontopodium dedekensii in alpine habitats of northwestern Yunnan, where plants are exposed to strong ultraviolet radiation, low temperatures, strong winds, and drought. To explore whether sympatric Asteraceae species from different lineages share chloroplast genomic features associated with alpine response, we sequenced, assembled, and compared the chloroplast genomes of these four species

Can obligate apomixis and more stable reproductive assurance explain the distributional successes of asexual triploids in Hieracium alpinum (Asteraceae)?

Although reproductive assurance has been suggested to be one of the most important factors shaping the differential distributional patterns between sexuals and asexuals (geographic parthenogenesis), it has only rarely been studied in natural populations of vascular plants with autonomous apomixis. Moreover, there are almost no data concerning the putative relationship between the level of apomictic versus sexual plant reproduction on one hand, and reproductive assurance on the other. We assessed the level of sexual versus apomictic reproduction in diploid and triploid plants of Hieracium alpin
