SANS-CNN: An automated machine learning technique for spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome with astronaut imaging data.

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is one of the largest physiologic barriers to spaceflight and requires evaluation and mitigation for future planetary missions. As the spaceflight environment is a clinically limited environment, the purpose of this research is to provide automated, early detection and prognosis of SANS with a machine learning model trained and validated on astronaut SANS optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. In this study, we present a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) incorporating an EfficientNet encoder for detecting SANS from OCT images

Suited versus unsuited analog astronaut performance using the Aouda.X space suit simulator: the DELTA experiment of MARS2013.

Space suit simulators are used for extravehicular activities (EVAs) during Mars analog missions. Flight planning and EVA productivity require accurate time estimates of activities to be performed with such simulators, such as experiment execution or traverse walking. We present a benchmarking methodology for the Aouda.X space suit simulator of the Austrian Space Forum. By measuring and comparing the times needed to perform a set of 10 test activities with and without Aouda.X, an average time delay was derived in the form of a multiplicative factor. This statistical value (a second-over-second

Reinforcement learning based variable damping control of wearable robotic limbs for maintaining astronaut pose during extravehicular activity.

As astronauts perform on-orbit servicing of extravehicular activity (EVA) without the help of the space station's robotic arms, it will be rather difficult and labor-consuming to maintain the appropriate position in case of impact. In order to solve this problem, we propose the development of a wearable robotic limb system for astronaut assistance and a variable damping control method for maintaining the astronaut's position. The requirements of the astronaut's impact-resisting ability during EVA were analyzed, including the capabilities of deviation resistance, fast return, oscillation resist

Effect of aliskiren on postdischarge mortality and heart failure readmissions among patients hospitalized for heart failure: the ASTRONAUT randomized trial.

IMPORTANCE: Hospitalizations for heart failure (HHF) represent a major health burden, with high rates of early postdischarge rehospitalization and mortality. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether aliskiren, a direct renin inhibitor, when added to standard therapy, would reduce the rate of cardiovascular (CV) death or HF rehospitalization among HHF patients. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: International, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that randomized hemodynamically stable HHF patients a median 5 days after admission. Eligible patients were 18 years or older with left ventricular eject

Evaluating the biological impact of shelters on astronaut health during different solar particle events: a Geant4-DNA simulation study.

Mechanistic Monte Carlo simulations have proven invaluable in tackling complex challenges in radiobiology, for example for protecting astronauts from solar particle events (SPEs) during deep space missions which remains an underexplored area. In this study, the Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo code was used to assess the DNA damage caused by SPEs and evaluate the protective effectiveness of a multilayer shelter. By examining the February 1956 and October 1989 SPEs-two extreme cases-the results showed that the proposed shelter reduced DNA damage by up to 57.9% for the October 1989 SPE and 36.7% for the F

Reducing motion sickness during simulated astronaut post-spaceflight water landings using anticipatory cues or postural control.

Astronauts returning to Earth after adapting to microgravity are susceptible to Entry Motion Sickness while they are readapting to 1G. We assessed the efficacy of two countermeasures in reducing the incidence and severity of motion sickness symptoms using a series of ground-based analogs meant to simulate the scenario of a post-spaceflight water landing: one hour of habituation to 2Gx centrifugation followed by up to an hour of passive wave-like motion at 1 G. The first countermeasure provided rich visual cues of current self-motion overlaid with anticipatory cues of self-motion one second in

Improved feasibility of astronaut short-radius artificial gravity through a 50-day incremental, personalized, vestibular acclimation protocol.

The "Coriolis" cross-coupled (CC) illusion has historically limited the tolerability of utilizing fast-spin rate, short-radius centrifugation for in-flight artificial gravity. Previous research confirms that humans acclimate to the CC illusion over 10 daily sessions, though the efficacy of additional training is unknown. We investigated human acclimation to the CC illusion over up to 50 daily sessions of personalized, incremental training. During each 25-min session, subjects spun in yaw and performed roll head tilts approximately every 30 s, reporting the presence or absence of the illusion w

Comparison of methods for individualized astronaut organ dosimetry: Morphometry-based phantom library versus body contour autoscaling of a reference phantom.

One of the hazards faced by space crew members in low-Earth orbit or in deep space is exposure to ionizing radiation. It has been shown previously that while differences in organ-specific and whole-body risk estimates due to body size variations are small for highly-penetrating galactic cosmic rays, large differences in these quantities can result from exposure to shorter-range trapped proton or solar particle event radiations. For this reason, it is desirable to use morphometrically accurate computational phantoms representing each astronaut for a risk analysis, especially in the case of a so

Systemic elevation of gut derived p-cresol during one year in space: implications for brain, heart, bone, liver and microbiome in astronauts.

INTRODUCTION: We observed the elevation of p-cresol in the untargeted metabolome of the multiomics portion of the NASA Twins Study of One Year in Space. p-Cresol is a uremic and neurotoxin that is produced via the metabolism of dietary tyrosine by gut bacteria. Intestinally produced p-cresol is absorbed into systemic circulation where it exerts its adverse metabolic effects and drives phenotypic changes relevant to astronauts, including the brain, heart, bone, liver, kidney, and colon. METHODS: A pair of monozygotic twins were studied for 25 months, during which one subject spent 340 days abo

Shoulder injury and surgery patterns among astronauts across spaceflight phases and mission operations: an analysis of 677 injuries from 1981 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder injuries are the most frequently reported musculoskeletal condition among astronauts, occurring across all spaceflight mission phases. With rising extravehicular activity (EVA) demands, a detailed understanding of injury patterns is critical. Prior studies have linked prolonged microgravity exposure to post-flight shoulder pathology but have not comprehensively characterized large-scale epidemiologic trends, phase-specific timing, or the influence of cumulative training exposures. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) characterize overall prevalence, identify the top 20 diagn

Application of multi-method-multi-model inference to radiation related solid cancer excess risks models for astronaut risk assessment.

The impact of including model-averaged excess radiation risks (ER) into a measure of radiation attributed decrease of survival (RADS) for the outcome all solid cancer incidence and the impact on the uncertainties is demonstrated. It is shown that RADS applying weighted model averaged ER based on AIC weights result in smaller risk estimates with narrower 95% CI than RADS using ER based on BIC weights. Further a multi-method-multi-model inference approach is introduced that allows calculating one general RADS estimate providing a weighted average risk estimate for a lunar and a Mars mission. For

Relationship between selected orientation rest frame, circular vection and space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness (SMS) and spatial orientation and motion perception disturbances occur in 70-80% of astronauts. People select "rest frames" to create the subjective sense of spatial orientation. In microgravity, the astronaut's rest frame may be based on visual scene polarity cues and on the internal head and body z axis (vertical body axis). The data reported here address the following question: Can an astronaut's orientation rest frame be related and described by other variables including circular vection response latencies and space motion sickness? The astronaut's microgravity spatia

Increased Rates of Hip Fractures Associated With Longer Spaceflight Durations.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze a recent survey of all astronaut fractures to assess whether the rate of postflight fractures is associated with durations of spaceflight missions. METHODS: Follow-up group comparisons of fracture incidence data (surveyed between 2018 and 2022) were analyzed within the astronaut cohort. Analyzing within the astronaut cohort addressed biases associated with the perception of greater physical activity in astronauts as a discriminating risk factor for fractures. The number of fractures was modeled using count regression adjusting for (1) repeated measures within individuals
