Differentiation between athlete's heart and dilated cardiomyopathy in athletic individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Distinguishing early dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) from physiological left ventricular (LV) dilatation with LV ejection fraction <55% in athletes (grey zone) is challenging. We evaluated the role of a cascade of investigations to differentiate these two entities. METHODS: Thirty-five asymptomatic active males with DCM, 25 male athletes in the 'grey zone' and 24 male athletes with normal LV ejection fraction underwent N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) measurement, ECG and exercise echocardiography. Grey-zone athletes and patients with DCM underwent cardiovascular m

Athletic activity and hormone concentrations in high school female athletes.

CONTEXT: Physical activity may affect the concentrations of circulating endogenous hormones in female athletes. Understanding the relationship between athletic and physical activity and circulating female hormone concentrations is critical. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that (1) the estradiol-progesterone profile of high school adolescent girls participating in training, conditioning, and competition would differ from that of physically inactive, age-matched adolescent girls throughout a 3-month period; and (2) athletic training and conditioning would alter body composition (muscle, bone)

Balance control during stance - A comparison between horseback riding athletes and non-athletes.

Horseback riding requires the ability to adapt to changes in balance conditions, to maintain equilibrium on the horse and to prevent falls. Postural adaptation involves specific sensorimotor processes integrating visual information and somesthesic information. The objective of this study was to examine this multisensorial integration on postural control, especially the use of visual and plantar information in static (stable) and dynamic (unstable) postures, among a group of expert horse rider women (n = 10) and a group of non-athlete women (n = 12). Postural control was evaluated through the c

Inter-segmental postural coordination measures differentiate athletes with ACL reconstruction from uninjured athletes.

Athletes who sustain non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and undergo surgical reconstruction exhibit deficits in sensorimotor control, which often impairs lower-limb movement coordination. The purpose of this experiment was to measure the influence of sensorimotor deficits on the ankle-hip coordination of a postural coordination task in athletes following ACL reconstruction. Twenty-two female athletes who were cleared to return to sports participation following ACL reconstruction and 22 uninjured female athletes performed a unilateral dynamic postural rhythmic coordination ta

Cytokine response to strenuous exercise in athletes and non-athletes--an adaptive response.

Exercise and physical strenuous activity have been demonstrated to increase the serum TNF-alpha and IL-6. Regular physical training is expected to attenuate such a response. This study was undertaken to understand the impact of regular exercise training on IL-6 and TNF-alpha in athletes and non-athletes. Ten athletes, who have been on regular training for the past 6 months, and 10 age- and sex-matched subjects (non-athlete group) who had no practice of regular exercise, were recruited. Both were subjected to undergo the same frequency level of strenuous exercise. Blood samples were collected;

Eating disorder behaviors of ethnically diverse urban female adolescent athletes and non-athletes.

This study compared Caucasian, Hispanic, and African-American urban adolescent athlete and non-athlete females for relative frequency of behavioral and psychological indices of eating disorders, while controlling for physical size. High school female athletes (n=571) and non-athletes (n=463) completed the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) composed of eight subscales that measure behavioral and psychological indices common in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The MANCOVA for the main effect of ethnicity showed Caucasians and Hispanics scored significantly higher than African-Americans on six

Neural processing of facial expressions: An ERP study in athletes and non-athletes.

Facial expressions are important cues for conveying social-emotional information, and their processing unfolds across multiple neural stages. The study employed event-related potentials to examine the neural dynamics of facial-expression change detection while testing the role of sports expertise. It further examined whether N170 responses showed prediction-error-related enhancement. Non-athletes, team-sport athletes, and individual-sport athletes completed ignore- and attend-oddball tasks, with angry and happy faces presented as rare stimulus types (deviants) and neutral faces as the frequent

Visio-spatial intelligence in athletes: comparison of field hockey players and non-athletes.

BACKGROUND: Visio-spatial intelligence (VSI) plays an important role in athletic performance and may vary according to sport-specific training exposure. However, there is limited research comparing VSI between field hockey players and non-athletes using a comprehensive test battery that assesses accommodation facility, saccadic eye movements, speed of recognition, visual memory, hand-eye coordination, and peripheral awareness. Most studies have focused on mixed sports or recreational activities, leaving sport-specific VSI profiles in field hockey insufficiently characterized. This study aimed

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation reduces motor slowing in athletes and non-athletes.

BACKGROUND: Motor fatigability describes a phenomenon that occurs when exhaustive exercise or physically demanding tasks are executed over an extended period of time. Concerning fast repetitive movements, it is noticeable by a reduction in movement speed (motor slowing, MoSlo) and occurs due to both central and peripheral factors. The aim of the present study was to examine the presence of MoSlo during hand- (HTT) and foot-tapping tasks (FTT) comparing trained football (FB) and handball players (HB) and non-athletes (NA). Furthermore, we were interested in how far anodal transcranial direct cu
