Abstract-Aquatic organisms in agricultural regions typically are exposed to mixtures of agrochemicals, and effects are not adequately predicted from results of single pesticide exposure studies. Thus, a mesocosm study was designed to examine the fate and effects of varying mixtures of three pesticides (chlorpyrifos, atrazine, and monosodium methanearsonate) and mercury-contaminated sediment to the common freshwater macrophyte Juncus effusus L. Exposure doses of pesticides added to mesocosms represented those that might be encountered in a typical runoff or direct spray application. This study

Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) is an active component of herbicides used worldwide in agriculture. Atrazine is an endocrine disruptor, capable of interfering with the delicate hormonal balance necessary for normal reproductive function. Despite numerous studies on atrazine's impact on male reproduction, significant gaps remain, particularly concerning the male genital tract beyond the testes. Therefore, we reviewed the effects of atrazine on the entire male reproductive system to understand the complexity of its actions. Adverse effects of atrazine on the morphoph

A commercial atrazine-mesotrione mixture (Calaris®) is widely used in agriculture due to its improved weed control. However, toxicological data on this combination remain elusive, especially regarding its effects on mammalian health. Herein, we investigated the effects of subchronic exposure to 2 and 20 mg Kg-1 of Calaris® in male Wistar rats, focusing on reproductive parameters. Eighty days of daily exposure to 20 mg Kg-1 of Calaris® elicited nitrosative stress and ionic disturbance in the hypothalamus, and low serum LH levels. In the testis, the highest dose disrupted the activity of antioxi

BACKGROUND: Atrazine (ATZ), a widely used herbicide, is implicated in neurodegenerative risks, yet its neurotoxic mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates how environmentally relevant ATZ exposure disrupts neuron-microglia interactions to drive Parkinson's disease (PD)-like pathology.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mice received 28-day oral ATZ (10 mg/kg/day). Behavioral phenotyping (open field, pole climb, wire hanging tests) assessed motor deficits. Midbrain tissues underwent histopathology and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Intercellular communication networks were reconstructed using

Atrazine is an herbicide widely used on plantations worldwide. Experimental studies suggest that the herbicide impairs male reproductive function in mammals. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of atrazine exposure on the levels of hormones from the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis using murine as the animal model. After an extensive literature search, we selected 25 articles for the systematic review. Bias analysis and methodological quality assessments were examined using the SYRCLE Risk of Bias tool. Moreover, 20 out of the 25 studies were eligible fo

Atrazine has been widely used as an herbicide, and its harm has attracted more and more attention. In this study, magnetic algal residue biochar (MARB) was prepared from algae residue, a by-product of aquaculture, by ball milling it with ferric oxide to study the adsorption and removal of the triazine herbicide atrazine in a soil medium. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results showed that atrazine removal by MARB reached 95.5% within 8 h at a concentration of 10 mg·L-1, but the removal rate dropped to 78.4% in the soil medium. The pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmui

This meta-analysis evaluates the association between atrazine (ATR) exposure and small for gestational age (SGA), preterm birth (PTB), and low birth weight (LBW). A comprehensive search was done on academic databases (e.g. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar) to achieve all pertinent studies up to May 2023. A pooled odd ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied to evaluate this correlation. As a result, five eligible studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in our study, and the result of the present meta-analysis showed that ATR exposure increas

Atrazine (ATZ) is an extensively used herbicide and ubiquitous environmental contaminant. ATZ and its metabolite, diaminochlorotriazine (DACT), cause several cellular and functional alterations in spermatozoa. We aimed to examine the effect of ATZ/DACT on spermatozoon DNA integrity, fertilization competence, embryonic development, and transcriptome profile of in vitro-produced embryos derived from fertilization with pre-exposed sperm. Bovine spermatozoa exposed to ATZ (0.1 or 1 μM) or DACT (1 or 10 μM) during in vitro capacitation were used for in vitro fertilization of untreated oocytes. Clea

Triazine herbicide atrazine is considered to be moderately toxic to various aquatic animals. The aim of our study was to evaluate the acute embryotoxicity of atrazine and its two degradation products, desisopropylatrazine and desethylatrazine, and their mixture to the early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio) by means of a modified method of the Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity (FET) Test - OECD guideline 236. Toxic effects were studied by the evaluation of lethal endpoints and development of disorders. Furthermore, sublethal endpoints such as hatching rate, formation of somites, development of e

An atrazine-degrading enrichment culture was used to study degradation of atrazine metabolites viz. hydroxyatrazine, deethylatrazine, and deisopropylatrazine in mineral salts medium. Results suggested that the enrichment culture was able to degrade only hydroxyatrazine, and it was used as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Hydroxyatrazine degradation slowed down when sucrose and/or ammonium hydrogen phosphate were supplemented as the additional sources of carbon and nitrogen, respectively. The enrichment culture could degrade high concentrations of atrazine (up to 110 μg/mL) in mineral sa

Cellular energy allocation (CEA) is a methodology developed to evaluate the effects of toxic stress on the metabolic balance of organisms. It consists of the integration of the energy reserves available (Ea; total carbohydrate, protein and lipid content) and energy consumption (Ec) estimated by measuring electron transport system (ETS) activity. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects on the energy budget of the soil invertebrate Enchytraeus albidus (Oligochaeta) after exposure to dimethoate, atrazine, and carbendazim (by testing the reproduction 10% effective concentrat

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide, and its residues are frequently detected in bee food sources. However, the impact of field-level atrazine residues on bees remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of 1.1 mg/kg atrazine on three bee species (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris, and Osmia excavata), by assessing changes in survival probability, sugar solution consumption, body weight, and gut function (including integrity, transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses). The results showed that 1.1 mg/kg atrazine did not significantly affect mortality or sugar solution consumption

Atrazine (ATR) is a widespread environmental herbicide that seriously affects agricultural work and human safety. Melatonin (MLT) as an endogenous neuroendocrine hormone is widely found in animals and plants, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Pink1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy keeps normal physiological processes by degrading damaged mitochondria in cells. Therefore, we investigated the potential role and mechanism of MLT in ATR-induced toxic injury of the spleen. The results showed that MLT alleviated ATR-induced unclear boundary between the white pulp and the red pulp of the

IN BRIEF: Atrazine, like oestrogen, disorganises laminin formation and reduces the number of germ cells and Sertoli cells in the developing testes of the tammar wallaby. This study suggests that interfering with the balance of androgen and oestrogen affects the integrity of laminin structure and testis differentiation.
ABSTRACT: The herbicide atrazine was banned in Europe in 2003 due to its endocrine disrupting activity but remains widely used. The integrity of the laminin structure in fetal testis cords requires oestrogen signalling but overexposure to xenoestrogens in the adult can cause te

Atrazine (ATZ), an herbicide widely distributed on a global scale, possess a potential risk for the development of various cancers upon environmental exposure. However, the effect and molecular mechanism of ATZ in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ATZ on the proliferation and migration of CCA cell in vitro. Immortalized human cholangiocytes (MMNK-1) and three CCA cell lines (KKU-055, KKU-100 and KKU-213B) were treated with 0.01 to 100 μM of ATZ and 17β-estradiol (E2). The results showed that, similar to E2, low doses (0.01 to 1 μM) of ATZ

Atrazine (ATZ) is a widely used triazine herbicide with potential neurotoxic effects, but the cell-type-specific responses of midbrain dopaminergic neurons to ATZ exposure remain poorly defined. In this study, we applied single-cell RNA sequencing to midbrain tissues from adult male mice exposed to ATZ for 28 days (a sub-acute exposure) to characterize transcriptional alterations associated with dopaminergic neuronal injury. Three mice per group were used for scRNA-seq, and group comparisons were performed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test, or the Kruskal-Wallis test with D

Atrazine (ATR), a widely used herbicide, poses significant environmental and health risks due to its high solubility and adsorption in soil. ATR exposure can lead to nephrotoxicity in humans and animals. Curcumin (Cur), an active compound in Curcuma species, is renowned for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, with potential to mitigate chronic disease risks. We hypothesized that the addition of Cur could alleviate renal impairment associated with ATR exposure and carried out experiments using mice as subjects. This study investigates whether Cur can attenuate ATR-induced nephroto

The burden and morbidity of environmental nephrosis is increasing globally. Atrazine (ATR) and degradation products in the environment are considered key determinants of nephrosis. However, the lack of highly effective treatments for environmental nephrosis creates an urgent need to better understand the preventive strategies and mechanisms. This study aimed to highlight the mechanism of ATR-induced environmental nephrosis and the chemoprotective potential of lycopene (LYC) against the renal injury and nephrosis. Male mice were treated with LYC (5 mg/kg) and/or ATR (50 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg) by g
