The female genital and urinary systems exists in close anatomical and functional proximity, disorders of one resulting in dysfunction of the other. The investigation and management of lower urinary tract disorders must take this important relationship into consideration, as neither can be viewed in isolation. The value of estrogen replacement therapy as a treatment of urinary incontinence is controversial and until today there is a little substantial evidence to conclude that estrogen therapy alone is of value in the treatment of this symptom. This conflicting evidence concerning the therapeut

The major relevant age-related changes that take place in women are caused by estrogen deficiency of rapid onset. This deficiency results in such changes as vaginal and vulval atrophy, atrophic urethrocystitis, breast flabbiness, thinning of the skin and its appendages, and also the severe metabolic changes like osteoporosis and cardiovascular disorders. All of these changes, in concert or alone, are capable of impairing a woman's sex life. Numerous genital complaints can be eliminated by local treatment with estriol cream, estriol vaginal suppositories, or systemic estriol. For the successful

Decreasing estrogen levels during the postmenopausal period results in tissue atrophy and physiological changes, such as thinning of the vaginal epithelium, prolapse and decreased pelvic floor strength and control. Sexual dysfunction associated with vaginal dryness occurs in postmenopausal patients. The present study (trial no. NCT05654610) was designed as an observational, multicenter, real-world clinical investigation to evaluate the performance and safety of the medical device Halova® ovules in decreasing vaginal symptoms associated with vulvovaginal atrophy and sexual dysfunction. BACKGROUND: Vaginal rejuvenation is a topic of interest to multiple specialties, including dermatologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, urologists, and gynecologists. Evidence suggests that minimally invasive, energy-based devices-radiofrequency and laser therapy-are effective at vaginal tightening and decreasing symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) and/or vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was completed using PubMed in November 2018 with search terms "vaginal" or "vagina" and "rejuvenation" or "tightening" or "laxity" or "radiofreq

Atrophic vaginitis represents a major barrier to compliance with aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy in breast cancer (BC) survivors. While local estrogen therapy is effective for postmenopausal vaginal dryness, the efficacy of such therapies has not been evaluated systematically in hormone receptor-positive (HR+) BC patients on AI therapy. Furthermore, the potential risk of breast cancer recurrence with vaginal estrogen therapy represents a long-term safety concern for the patients with HR + BC. Unfortunately, there is no standardized assay to measure very low concentrations of estradiol (E2) in

INTRODUCTION: Vaginal atrophy, which is associated with vaginal itching, burning, dryness, irritation, and pain, is estimated to affect up to 40% of postmenopausal women. Estrogens play a key role in maintaining vaginal health; women with low serum estradiol are more likely to experience vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, and reduced sexual activity compared with women who have higher estradiol levels.
AIMS: The purpose of this review is to assess the prevalence and impact of dyspareunia, a symptom of vaginal atrophy, on the health of postmenopausal women and to evaluate treatment options using va

Bullous ulcerative lichen ruber planus (BULRP) in a 58-year-old woman is described. Besides the common symptoms (papular rash, vesicles and ulcers on the soles, detachment of the nail plates, atrophic foci on the hairy part of the head), the patient has developed erosions on the buccal and vaginal mucosa, articular involvement, complete loss of hair in the armpits and on the pubis. Local dibunol liniment has been effective in therapy of the mucosal erosions.

Twenty-four postmenopausal women with vaginal atrophy due to oestrogen deficiency were treated with 17 beta-oestradiol administered as vaginal tablets containing 10 and 25 micrograms, respectively, in a slow-release system (Vagifem, Novo Nordisk, Denmark). All the women were treated for 2 weeks with each dose in a double-blind, cross-over study. Plasma concentrations of unconjugated oestradiol and unconjugated oestrone were measured at regular intervals for 24 h on days 1 and 14 of each treatment regimen. Cytological and clinical evaluations of the vaginal and urethral epithelium were also car

The genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a relatively new term for the condition previously known as vulvovaginal atrophy, atrophic vaginitis, or urogenital atrophy. The term was first introduced in 2014. GSM is a chronic, progressive, vulvovaginal, sexual, and lower urinary tract condition characterized by a broad spectrum of signs and symptoms. Most of these symptoms can be attributed to the lack of estrogen that characterizes menopause. Even though the condition mainly affects postmenopausal women, it is seen in many premenopausal women as well. The hypoestrogenic state results in h

The term genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), previously known as vulvovaginal atrophy or atrophic vaginitis, was introduced in 2014 by the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) and International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH) to highlight a broader scope of urogenital symptoms associated with menopause. While the majority of studies focus on vulvovaginal symptoms and sexual dysfunction, a large proportion of women also present with one or more urinary complaints related to urogenital atrophy, such as urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia, dysuria, urinary incon

BACKGROUND: Although transcutaneous temperature-controlled radiofrequency (TTCRF) may effectively treat vulvovaginal laxity (VVL), atrophic vaginitis (AV), orgasmic dysfunction (OD), and stress urinary incontinence (SUI), there is a lack of histopathologic evidence to validate its use.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate clinical and histological changes induced by vulvovaginal TTCRF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, nonrandomized trial. Ten female subjects with mild-to-moderate VVL, with or without AV, OD, and/or SUI underwent 3 TTCRFs at 4-week intervals. Five subjects underwent pre- and pos
