An unusual case of ear mould impression material as a foreign body in the middle ear: case report.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of retained ear mould impression material is rare and can lead to complications. The current case report describes one such complication, where the silicone impression material used to take the impression of the ear canal flowed into the middle ear through the pre-existing tympanic membrane perforation. Five days later, the patient presented with worsened hearing and blood-tinged discharge from the ear. Ear microscopy revealed a greenish foreign body in the middle ear. CASE REPORT: The foreign body was removed by tympanotomy and the perforation repaired using a temp

Understanding, experience and attitudes towards artificial intelligence technologies for clinical decision support in hearing health: a mixed-methods survey of healthcare professionals in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: Clinician acceptance influences technology adoption, but UK health professionals' attitudes towards artificial intelligence (AI) in hearing healthcare are unclear. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap. METHODS: An online survey, based on the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys, was distributed to audiologists, ENT specialists and general practitioners. The survey collected quantitative and qualitative data on demographics and attitudes to AI in hearing healthcare. RESULTS: Ninety-three participants (mean age 39 years, 56 per cent female) from three pro

Causation of permanent unilateral and mild bilateral hearing loss in children.

Children with permanent unilateral or mild bilateral hearing loss have been a focus of concern by audiologists, educators, and physicians for at least 2 decades. These children are known to be at risk for psychoeducational difficulties. However, despite this concern, little has been learned about the causative factors of these hearing losses and how those factors might be contributing to child development. This review of known causes of permanent unilateral and mild bilateral hearing loss in children is meant to draw attention to the importance of the search for etiologic factors. That is, the

Pilot Comparison of Adjustment Protocols of Personal Sound Amplification Products.

The Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 was signed into law in August 2017 and facilitates the introduction of direct-to-consumer sales of hearing aids for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Among many questions surrounding over-the-counter sales is the ability of users to self-fit amplification. Many studies have conducted self-fitting procedures using guidance materials provided by audiologists. In this pilot, we explore the ability of users to self-adjust personal sound amplification devices using only materials provided by the manufacturer and contrast this with models that in

Survey of otolaryngology services in Central America: need for a comprehensive intervention.

In the developing world, there exists a scarcity of services and training in otolaryngology, audiology, and speech therapy, which is reflected by the gap between health care delivery in high-income countries and low-income countries. We surveyed, by questionnaire, the countries of Central America, except for Belize, because of the lack of otolaryngology services, on the following issues: availability of otolaryngology, audiology, and speech therapy services and equipment; otolaryngologist, audiologist, and speech therapist training; and availability of services in rural areas. Surveys were dis

External and middle ear trauma resulting from ear impressions.

When taking an impression of the external ear canal and ear, the audiologist is engaged in an invasive procedure whereby a foreign body is first placed into the ear canal and then removed. There is always an element of risk for significant medical problems when a clinician is performing an invasive procedure. Although some minor patient discomfort and, at times, some slight trauma to the ear canal occur when taking ear impressions, the incidence of significant trauma to the external or middle ear appears to be low. The purpose of this report is to provide some illustrative cases of significant

CHARGE association.

CHARGE association is a heterogeneous condition that affects several organ systems, including the eye, ear, nose, heart, and genitals. Hearing loss is a common finding in CHARGE association; therefore, audiologists and otolaryngologists need to be familiar with this relatively common entity.

Moderators and predictors in a parent hearing aid management eHealth program.

OBJECTIVE: Consistent hearing aid use is essential for spoken language development of children who are hard of hearing. A recent randomised controlled trial of an eHealth hearing aid management education program found the intervention increased knowledge, perceptions, confidence, and device monitoring among parents of young children. Yet, it is not known which variables can be a point of emphasis to improve treatment outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential moderators and predictors in the eHealth program. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. STUDY SAMPLE: Parents (N

Factors affecting the implementation of evidence-based Progressive Tinnitus Management in Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.

PURPOSE: Progressive Tinnitus Management (PTM) is an evidence-based interdisciplinary stepped-care approach to improving quality of life for patients with tinnitus. PTM was endorsed by Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Audiology leadership in 2009. Factors affecting implementation of PTM are unknown. We conducted a study to: 1) estimate levels of PTM program implementation in VA Audiology and Mental Health clinics across the country; and 2) identify barriers and facilitators to PTM implementation based on the experiences of VA audiologists and mental health providers. METHOD: We conducted a

Feasibility of Acupuncture to Induce Sleep for Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response Testing.

Purpose Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) testing is often performed under general anesthesia for children unable to complete behavioral audiologic evaluation. Alternatively, acupuncture treatment may be considered appropriate for BAER. Reports of acupuncture treatment in pediatric patients are scarce but are needed to demonstrate effectiveness. This study had 2 main objectives: (a) to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of acupuncture to achieve sleep to perform diagnostic BAER testing in medically complex (Cohort I) and nonmedically complex (Cohort II) children and (b) to asses

Challenges in ototoxicity monitoring in the pediatric oncology population.

BACKGROUND: Platinum-based chemotherapy and cranial radiation are effective treatment options commonly prescribed for a variety of childhood cancers. These therapies can, and often do, result in early- and late-onset adverse health effects such as hearing loss. Undetected hearing loss is particularly concerning in young children developing speech and language skills and can negatively affect academic achievement and the psychosocial well-being of both young and older children. Early detection of hearing loss in pediatric oncology patients and early intervention are critical to help these patie

Guidelines for the delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology services in home care.

Due to changing demographics, consumer preference, and priorities of the total health care delivery system, home care services are increasingly vital to the safety, well-being, and quality of life of many people. Consequently, the number of persons who need home-based speech-language pathology and audiology services is increasing. These guidelines cover the professional service components and related aspects of the home care model. It is ASHA's position that home-based speech-language pathology and audiology services should be conducted by certified (and licensed where applicable) speech-langu

AMTAS: automated method for testing auditory sensitivity: validation studies.

Three studies are reported assessing the validity of AMTAS, an automated method for obtaining an audiogram, including air- and bone-conduction thresholds (stimuli delivered by a forehead-placed transducer) with masking noise presented to the non-test ear. In Study 1, six subjects at each of three sites were tested using manual audiometry by two audiologists at each site. The mean differences between the audiograms for the paired audiologists provided a measure of the reliability of traditional audiometry. In Study 2, thirty subjects (5 normal hearing, 25 hearing impaired) were tested using AMT

Paediatric post-grommets surgery review: Audiology-led clinic.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media (OM) has a high prevalence in childhood, and grommet insertion is the most common surgical treatment for OM. The public health system in Australia faces considerable strains, including high demand for Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists. Extending the scope of practice for audiologists to manage post-operative care for children receiving grommets has the potential to alleviate this burden. METHODS: This non-randomised, cross-sectional study investigated the efficacy and feasibility of an audiology-led clinic for managing paediatric patients after grommet insertion

Clinician-rated quality of video otoscopy recordings and still images for the asynchronous assessment of middle-ear disease.

INTRODUCTION: Video otoscopy plays an important role in improving access to ear health services. This study investigated the clinician-rated quality of video otoscopy recordings and still images, and compared their suitability for asynchronous diagnosis of middle-ear disease. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty video otoscopy image-recording pairs were collected from 150 children (aged six months to 15 years) by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, audiologists, and trained research assistants, and independently rated by an audiologist and ENT surgeon. On a five-point scale, clinicians rate

What every otolaryngologist should know about hearing aids.

The otolaryngologist does not have to fit hearing aids, but he does have to know with a broad encompassing view what is being done by the hearing aid dispenser and the audiologist in regards to hearing aid fitting and selection. The acquisition of a hearing aid is part of the general care for the hard of hearing. In this particular case, the otolaryngologist should always be the "Captain of the Ship." With him, as paramedical advisors and assistors, are the audiologist and the hearing aid dispenser. The ultimate responsibility of the members of this team to see that the patient is properly fit

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Managing Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, and Misophonia: The 2025 Tonndorf Lecture.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based intervention for managing distress associated with tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia. This paper summarises key points from the 2025 Tonndorf Lecture presented at the third World Tinnitus Congress and the 14th International Tinnitus Seminar in Poland. The lecture addressed (1) the theoretical foundations of CBT for these conditions, (2) clinical evidence on CBT delivered by psychologists, audiologists, and digital self-help, and (3) the proportion of patients who may benefit from CBT. Research demonstrates that CBT can effectively re

Prevalence of hearing-loss among HAART-treated children in the Horn of Africa.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of hearing loss (HL) in children infected with HIV/AIDS is not well studied. Even fewer studies focus on stable HIV-infected children treated with high-effective antiretroviral therapy (HAART). We aim to compare the prevalence of ear disease and HL in HAART-treated, HIV + children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with a well, similarly-aged elementary school population with unknown HIV status (HIVU). METHODS: Children underwent standard head and neck examination and cerumen removal by board certified otolaryngologists. Next, certified audiologists performed hearing screenin

Practice of Monitoring Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity by Audiology, ENT, and Oncology Specialists: A Survey-Based Study in a Single Italian Medical Center.

Ototoxic drugs can result in hearing loss and tinnitus. Early detection of the ototoxic process can help minimize or prevent these consequences. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has provided guidelines for monitoring ototoxicity, whereas Italy has not yet implemented a national monitoring protocol. This study aims to assess the current state of ototoxicity monitoring in patients receiving cisplatin therapy. A self-administered survey has been used to gather information from oncologists, audiologists, and ENT specialists. The research was conducted at Santa Maria della Misericor
