Audiological findings in a case of cerebellar angioreticuloma.

The aetiology of neurosensorial damage with unilateral hearing loss and/or tinnitus and dizziness can often be difficult to determine because they may be caused wide variety of pathologic processes and a variety of diagnostic tests are needed in initial evaluation. In this paper, the authors describe, the techniques and indications of neuroimaging for evaluation of auditory symptoms. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is still the choice when condition is suspected. We present a study of one patient with unilateral tinnitus, with no significant hearing loss and normal ABR: the patient u

Audiological abnormalities in patients with alopecia areata.

BACKGROUND: Audiological abnormalities seen in various autoimmune disorders raises the question of whether such abnormalities also exist in alopecia areata. OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to detect possible audiological abnormalities in Alopecia areata (AA) patients. METHODS: The study population consisted of 51 patients with AA and 51 healthy controls. Autoscopic and audiometric examinations of both ears were performed in patients and controls. Audiometric examinations were performed using a pure tone audiometer in a silent cabin. Pure tone thresholds were determined for each ear at fr

Audiologic findings in Saethre-Chotzen syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss has been described in Apert syndrome but is poorly documented in other craniosynostosis disorders. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the audiologic and otologic records of patients with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome to define the incidence, type, and extent of hearing loss. Only patients with documented audiologic examinations were included. Hearing loss was categorized by American Speech-Language-Hearing Association guidelines (i.e., mild, 26 to 40 dB; moderate, 41 to 55 dB; moderate/severe, 56 to 70 dB; severe, 71 to 90 dB; and profound, >90 dB). RESULTS: Tw

Audiological and vestibular findings in the Kabuki syndrome.

Since the first description of Kabuki syndrome (KS) in 1981, over 350 cases from a variety of countries have been reported. Even though otolaryngological manifestations are common in KS, only a limited number of the reports provide audiological and vestibular data. The aim of the present study was to investigate the vestibular function and describe the audiological findings in KS. The present study reports no audiological and vestibular features in a group of 10 KS patients (7 males, 3 females), with chronological age ranging from 10 to 25 years (mean age = 14.5): a complete otoneurological an

[Audiological assessment in 88 patients with otosclerosis].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical data of the hearing in otosclerosis patients and explore their association with the clinical manifestations. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of 88 otosclerosis cases (162 ears) was performed. Pure tone audiometry was performed in all the cases 1 to 3 days before the operation for speech analysis at the frequencies of 500, 1 k, 2 kHz and to determined the average pure-tone hearing threshold (PTA) and gas Bone gap (ABG). The incidence of carhart notch was observed in patients with simple conductive hearing loss and mixed hearing loss, and in the early, middle

Audiological findings in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease. The aim of this investigation was to study the relationship between AS and hearing loss. This study compared 28 patients with AS with 23 age-matched controls. All subjects underwent ENT examination, audiological and acoustic immittance measurements, and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests. Sensorineural hearing loss was found in 28.6 per cent of the AS patients and in 4.35 per cent of the control group. For hearing levels at 250-500 Hz and 4000-8000 Hz, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Ac

Audiological features of Turner's syndrome in adults.

Abnormalities of the ear and hearing are well recognized in Turner's syndrome (TS), which is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities. Presented here are the preliminary data from a UK study of the audiological features of 113 women over the age of 16 years with TS. Seventeen per cent had normal hearing. 19% had conductive or mixed loss, and 47% had sensorineural hearing loss associated with the TS. The results are discussed with reference to previously published studies and to the lack of consensus on comparative definitional terms in audiology.

Clinical and audiological features in auditory neuropathy.

OBJECTIVE: To medically and audiologically characterize a population of children diagnosed as having auditory neuropathy (AN). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective medical chart review. SETTING/SUBJECTS: We identified 22 patients from a pediatric otology clinic in a tertiary care pediatric hospital setting. RESULTS: A genetic factor in AN is suggested by our identification of 3 families with 2 affected children and 2 other children with family histories that were positive for hearing loss. Clinical features common among our population included a history of hyperbilirubinemia (n = 11 [50%]), prematur

Audiological assessment in Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is known to cause symptoms and signs of vestibulocochlear dysfunction, including sensorineural hearing loss. The present study investigates the audiological features of a group of 15 patients with this syndrome. A complete otolaryngological, neurologic, and audiological workup was performed in every patient, including auditory brain stem response measurements and recording of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions. In most patients, some degree of hearing loss was evident, and abnormal latencies and interpeak latencies of the auditory brain stem response, or even absence

Audiological abnormalities in the Klippel-Feil syndrome.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is defined as a short neck with decreased movement and low posterior hairline. Radiologically, there is a failure of cervical segmentation. Deafness is a well known associated feature and may be of sensorineural, conductive, or mixed type. The audiological assessment of 44 patients with KFS is reported. Thirty five were found to have abnormalities on audiological testing. The presence of other features in these patients, reviews of data from other reports, and the need for further study are discussed.

Audiologic findings in a family with mitochondrial disorder.

Mitochondrial disorder is an inborn error of metabolism affecting the cellular respiratory chain. Defective energy production leads to a wide variety of clinical manifestations (ataxia, epilepsy, dementia, myopathy, polyneuropathy, retinal pigment anomalies, and cardiomyopathy with conduction anomalies). Hearing loss is a regular feature and is often the first clinical symptom. Audiologic data from 26 members of a family in three generations is presented. One of these patients was examined for the biochemical error. Respiratory study of muscle biopsy revealed a mild defect in the NADH-ubiquino

Audiological findings following head trauma.

Traumatic head injury is the principal cause of death and serious physical disability in adolescents and young adult. Hearing loss is a common sequela of head trauma. The results of pure tone and auditory brain-stem response (ABR) assessment of minor head injury revealed that 20 per cent of these cases showed impairment of hearing including both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss mostly in the high frequencies loss. ABR findings showed a significant difference of absolute wave V latency and interwave (III-V) latencies at repetition rate 11.1 click/sec., and a highly significant differen

Audiological findings of prolonged Menière's disease.

As Ménière's disease progresses, the fluctuations becomes less marked and the hearing level gradually declines. In the more established and advanced stages of the disease, a permanent and progressive hearing loss develops. It has been reported, however, that hearing acuity in some patients with Ménière's disease significantly improved after having had the disorder for many years. Such observation suggests that the inner ear pathology in late stages of Ménière's disease may not be necessarily irreversible. The purpose of this investigation was to assess whether or not various audiological evalu

Audiological manifestations of Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is known to cause audiological signs and symptoms, including sudden, unexpected hearing loss. We carried out a retrospective review of the audiological manifestations of 186 patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, measuring their hearing loss patterns, hyperacusis, tinnitus, herpetic rash, facial paralysis, pain and vertigo. Statistical correlations of these parameters were equated with prognosis. Prognosis for eventual hearing recovery is, in general, excellent. Prognostic indicators of poor hearing recovery include advanced age, retrocochlear hearing loss, male gender, verti

A clinical and audiological investigation of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Fifty-six patients with osteogenesis imperfecta underwent clinical and audiological assessment. They completed questionnaires regarding their physical and otological disabilities, and attended various centres for audiological testing. It was found that 31 patients had a hearing loss. Hearing loss began in the second and third decades as a conductive loss, and progressed to a mixed loss. Eight patients, found in all age groups, had a pure sensorineural loss in one or both ears. Patients with osteogenesis imperfecta congenita suffered more fractures, became more physically disabled and had more

Audiological screening of Amerindians of the Suriname rainforest.

Audiological screening tests were conducted among a remote, relatively noise-free population of Amerindians in the deep rainforests of Surinam, South America. These preliminary tests, the initial step in a planned long-term study, were the first such examinations on these people, and were intended to examine the overall audiological health of the population as a function of age and sex. Audiological testing of this non-technological population was more challenging than conventional test situations in modern industrial societies because the tests were hampered by a variety of extraneous factors
