Audiological outcomes in patients with congenital aural atresia implanted with transcutaneous active bone conduction hearing implant.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the transcutaneous Bone Conduction Implant, the Bonebridge, in patients with congenital aural atresia. METHODS: Audiometry, speech recognition test and free field audiometry were performed. Word recognition scores and speech perception was evaluated using Spanish phonetically-balanced disyllables word list. RESULTS: Fourteen subjects were implanted with the Bonebridge (seven bilateral placements). The study cohort comprised seven males and seven females aged from 3 to 17 years (mean age 9.76yrs). All patients a

Speech perception processes and fitting of hearing aids.

A model of speech perception is modified to take into account the adaptational factors involved in speech perception and learning. In connection with fitting of hearing aids, the model permits a description and identification of factors influencing the immediate and long-term benefits of a hearing aid. Various aspects of the model in connection with the rehabilitation process using hearing aids are considered and a new step-wise adjusting procedure for the assessment of hearing aids is proposed. Our observations imply that speech audiometry is a poor indicator of the long-term benefit of a hea

Management of non-organic hearing loss in children - A case study.

A 10 year-old girl was admitted due to the claim of progressively developing hearing loss. The impedance audiometry showed no abnormalities but it was impossible to obtain reliable outcomes during pure tone audiometry assessment. The girl was additionally sent for speech audiometry, indicating a bilateral hearing loss and objective evaluations such as distortion product otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses, which results indicated a normal hearing. On the second day, repeated subjective audiometric tests showed also normal hearing, despite constantly reported hearing loss. Af

Early identification of hearing impaired infants: Public Law 94-142 falls short.

Public Law (P.L.) 94-142, although greatly increasing the physician's role in delivery of services to handicapped children, falls short in meeting the needs of hearing impaired children from birth to 36 months in that it does not mandate referral services until age three years. The literature has shown that both conductive and sensorineural hearing losses cause delay in the development of normal speech and language. Further, those children identified and treated earlier demonstrate higher skill levels on speech and language tasks than those children identified late. The High Risk Register for

High-Frequency Gain and Maximum Output Effects on Speech Recognition in Bone-Conduction Hearing Devices: Blinded Study.

INTRODUCTION: Bone-conduction hearing device (BCHD) uses natural sound transmission through bone and soft tissue, directly to the cochlea, via an external processor that captures and processes sound, which is converted into mechanical vibrations. Key parameters, as maximum power output (MPO) and broader frequency range (FR), must be considered when indicating a BCHD because they can be decisive for speech recognition, especially under listening challenge conditions. OBJECTIVES: Compare hearing performance and speech recognition in noise of two sound processors (SPs), with different features o

Cochlear implant and hearing aid: a new approach to optimizing the fitting in this bimodal situation.

More and more patients with residual hearing on the contralateral side are becoming candidates for cochlear implants (CI) surgery due to increasing CI. The major benefits of regular binaural hearing are spatial hearing, localization, and signal source discrimination in both quiet and noisy surroundings. In most of the reports, hearing aid fitting was carried out without balancing both the devices. Twelve children and eight adults with residual hearing on the non-operated side were binaurally fitted. Our fitting procedure for the hearing aid was based on the desired sensation level [i/o] method

Reduced auditory efferent activity in childhood selective mutism.

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism is a psychiatric disorder of childhood characterized by consistent inability to speak in specific situations despite the ability to speak normally in others. The objective of this study was to test whether reduced auditory efferent activity, which may have direct bearings on speaking behavior, is compromised in selectively mute children. METHODS: Participants were 16 children with selective mutism and 16 normally developing control children matched for age and gender. All children were tested for pure-tone audiometry, speech reception thresholds, speech discrimina

Audiological disturbances caused by long-term exposure to industrial solvents. Relation to the diagnosis of toxic encephalopathy.

Sixty workers, consecutively admitted due to suspicion of solvent-induced chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE), were investigated with pure-tone audiometry, determination of speech recognition of monosyllabic words and distorted speech and cortical response audiometry (CRA). Eighteen workers not exposed to occupational solvents and noise were also investigated. The scores in the distorted speech test were significantly lower and the CRA latencies were significantly longer in the solvent group than in the control group. There was no difference between the groups in the pure-tone and monosyllabic

Presbycusis and phonemic regression.

One thousand forty two tonal and speech audiograms are compared to the results of Jerger's speech audiometry (Synthetic Sentence Identification). In older subjects (more than 50 years) with a normal PTA or with a high frequency hearing loss, the speech intelligibility is better in a silent than in a noisy environment where it is a function of the Speech reception threshold. This difference is much smaller in younger individuals. In subjects with a horizontal Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA) (between 20 and 60 dB) the speech intelligibility is almost the same in a silent or a noisy environment for bot

Hearing disorders in Turner's syndrome: a survey from Iran.

Turner syndrome (TS) is one of the most frequently encountered sex-linked chromosomal abnormalities, occurring in one per 2,000 female births. These patients present with short stature and failure to begin puberty. In this syndrome, there are multiple organ abnormalities, including auditory disorders. TS patients were referred to the ENT clinic by a pediatric endocrinologist. A questionnaire was filled out and the patients went through a complete otologic examination. They were then referred to the audiology clinic to undergo audiologic test battery plus high-frequency pure tone audiometry. Fr

Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in children less than 15 years of age.

1-10 years after the first examination, 56 children below 15 years of age with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss were re-examined with a test-battery consisting of puretone and speech audiometry, stapedius reflex tests, caloric tests, brainstem response audiometry and otoneurological tests. In no case was an acoustic tumour suspected on the basis of the test results. A small progression of the hearing loss occurred in only one ear. In no case did the healthy ears develop hearing loss during the observation period. Diagnostic procedures can in most of such cases be limited to pure-tone audi

Cochleovestibular involvement in patients with Fabry disease: data from the multicenter cohort FFABRY.

PURPOSE: Fabry disease (FD) is a lysosomal storage disease responsible for cochleovestibular involvement. Exact prevalence and pathophysiological mechanisms behind ENT affections are still poorly known. Treating FD with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) does not seem to significantly improve the ENT symptoms, while the impact of migalastat has yet to be determined. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective multi-centre study on 47 patients from the FFABRY cohort who had an ENT consultation in the context of their FD. The information collected were as follows: clinical examination, videonystagmos
